Life Muses by Ro: Little Things Matter
In between the Boutique upgrade and personal issues (remember “The
Door” incident from Tuesday’s newsletter?) last week, I
simply did not have time to write any muses for the newsletter this
week. So, I’m taking this opportunity to bring you some of my “Best
of Ro” muses. Enjoy!

She vigorously told us to stop. “We are getting soaked,” she cried. “Stop touching it.”
We could see that she was right and with each finger stroke, water moved from the outside to the inside of the canvas. We were in a tent and it was supposed to keep us safe from the storm. But to a ten-year-old 4-H camper, the little bit of moisture our curiosity brought inside the tent seemed immaterial. We felt driven to follow the rivulets of water with our fingers in the same way an ant is programmed to follow a path as it carries food back to its home.
As the ferocity of the storm increased, our teenage camp counselor became increasingly concerned. We would not stop stroking the sides of the tent and our sleeping bags were becoming soaked. And because we had been dropped off in the canyon by one of our parents for our overnight experience, we had no viable way of returning home without outside assistance.
Once my friends and I realized the gravity of our situation, we began to cry. We imagined we would drown as the nearby creek flooded, starve from lack of food, or freeze from exposure to the elements. We were certain we were going to die.
At last, our leader remembered that the campground had a roofed pavilion. We hastily dressed and ran towards it. We arrived at the shelter splattered in mud and tears.
I’ll never forget the sense of hopelessness I felt that night because as we ran, we discovered all of the other campgrounds had been abandoned. We were alone. I’ll also never forget the sense of relief I felt when we saw a set of car lights pulling into the pavilion’s parking lot. One of the girl’s parents woke in the night and, sensing that we might be in trouble, had driven to the campground to check on us.
It occurs to me, as I reflect on this event, that it is a parable what may occur to us in our life. Every moment we are faced with small, seemingly inconsequential, decisions.
-
What time we get up in the morning
-
What we eat
-
When we eat
-
What we say to ourselves when we look in the mirror
-
What we say to ourselves about how we spend the next 15 minutes
-
How we respond when someone says something that bothers us
-
What we do with junk mail. (Do we throw it away immediately or do we leave it on the counter to do later?)
-
Do we allow ourselves a little bit of time to do something for ourselves today or not?
Every breath, every moment, every minute leads to an hour. Hours add up to days. Days quickly turn into months and before you know it, years or even decades have gone by.
Yesterday, I finally had a mammogram. It had been eight years since I had the last one. My doctor repeatedly told me to have one as I am over forty and it is recommended that someone in my age group have one annually. It is extra important for that I have one as I have been taking hormone replacement therapy for fourteen years because my ovaries were removed when I was a young woman. And yet it took me nearly a decade to follow through and schedule this important exam.
Why?
Because I didn’t pick up the telephone and dial the number. I have various reasons: I had to look up the number prior to dialing it. I imagined that it would take too much time out of my busy schedule. I remembered the embarrassment and discomfort I felt when I had them before.
My failure to get my annual mammogram – this life saving exam which takes less than one hour – came out of small, seemingly inconsequential but repeated decisions to tell myself, “Ill do it later.”
How often do we do this to ourselves? How many goals are we not achieving because we choose to do something less important? How many hugs do we fail to warm our souls with because we are too hurried to stop and hug our family members or loved ones? How much heavier are we because we think, “This bite won’t matter.”
My friends and I were flooded out of our tent so many years ago because we made a series of small, bad choices. I am enjoying a certain amount of success and happiness at the present because I have made a series of small, good choices. Small decisions give me the skills I have needed when I am faced with larger, life-altering decisions.
We have been blessed with free well to decide the course of our lives each and every moment we live and breathe.
Let us all choose well.

Way Cool Stuff Product
Review: Digital Layout Templates
Note: This product review was written using Photoshop CS3 on a PC.
Digital layout templates are one of my favorite ‘tools’ in digital scrapbooking. This is because of the complete versatility they give me when putting together a layout. I use them when I have a mojo no go or alternatively, when I am stuck in a little designing rut or, quite simply, when I see a template that I just love and have to have NOW! They are also a fantastic launching pad for newcomers to digi-scrapping for creating a layout on the computer without the stress of trying to come up with a completely new design and concept whilst just beginning a digi-scrapping journey.
Our digital layout templates here at Scrapgirls come in the form of a folder with a number of .png files inside that you build by placing one .png file over the other. Some of our templates even come with a .psd (Photoshop) file that Photoshop users can just open and all the elements are already in place and you can get started straight away.
For this project, I used two digital layout templates to show you that not only can you use a template to create your layout; you can mix things up a bit by combining two or more templates together, removing some aspects of one template or replacing it with something from another template.
Here I used Sarah Batdorf’s Loved One digital layout template and Syndee Nuckle’s Be Square digital layout template.

What I did next was combine elements from both templates into my own ‘design’ using only the items from each that I liked and wanted to use. I also played around with the actual placement of these elements until I was completely happy. The result is as you see it here.

Once you are happy with your digital layout template, whether you have played around with the elements or not, the fun begins. Start by placing your photos in the spaces allotted, or frankly, where ever you want them to go, and then continue ‘building’ your layout from there. In fact, once you are in the process of creating your layout from the template, you may find that there are elements you want to put back in or remove from your template design. With digital layout templates, your layout can come to life and even give you back that surge of creativity you may have been missing.
So, even for those of us who are seasoned scrapbookers, digital layout templates are a worthwhile investment, if only to save our sanity, once in a while, LOL!

Ro personally uses Carbonite to
back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives,
it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important
documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely
up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying
about losing important business and financial files, because
the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
