Life Muses by Ro: Yo. Peace.
Note from Ro: In between the Boutique upgrade and personal issues
(remember “The Door” incident from last Tuesday’s
newsletter?) the week before last, I simply did not have time to write
any muses for the newsletter. Because we schedule everything a week
in advance, that means that you get to read through some of my “Best
of Ro” muses.
Enjoy!

I will do chores tomorrow. If I don’t do them, I will be
grounded next week with zero dollars.
Yo. Peace.
Always homes,
Julianne
I stumbled on this bargain Julianne and I had struck
last spring when I was flipping through my idea notebook. I can’t
recall what particular social event motivated the agreement to be drawn,
but I am fairly sure the discussion between us went well as the contract
is accompanied by scribbled hearts. I can almost remember her sitting
in the other chair in my office and I am certain there was a fair amount
of pleading involved. The social event must have been important to
her or she would not have been willing to sign away the promise of
her future allowance should she not do her chores on time.
This short
note, scribbled in my notebook, brings back the sound of her voice
as she ran down the hall bellowing, “Mom! Are you in
there?”
When asked, the question always makes me smile because
I am nearly always in my office. She knows this but seems compelled
to ask the question anyway. I suppose she needs to hear I haven’t
disappeared.
She asks me, “What are you doing?”
I nearly always reply, “Working.”
“Oh.”
And then the request comes. It comes as certainly
as moonlight shines in my bedroom window in the summertime. It comes
certainly as the maple tree in our backyard comes to life each spring.
And it comes as certainly as water sipped from a cup quenches my thirst.
The
appeal comes quickly. She is not one to spend time on non-essential
chatter about the weather or what is for dinner. Rather, she gets straight
to the point because time is short and she is anxious to be on her
way.
Occasionally I tell her I would love to talk to her minus requests.
This statement surprises her: she isn’t aware what she is doing.
She is simply a teenager whirling through life and she doesn’t
know Mother has a life of her own.
Someday she and I will sit on my
couch and she will tell me all about her children and complain that
they always want something from her. I will smile and nod at her and
tell her it's okay... a child always
needs her mother in some way or other.
I believe I will keep this note
from her as a reminder of who she was during these missions of thought.
I’ll tuck it away in a
scrapbook and pull it out when I am old and smile.
Yo. Peace.
Always homes,
-

Designer Do-Over: Pat Bowman
My Original

Original by Pat Bowman
Let me start by saying that when I originally created
this layout in April 2006, I was very proud of myself. I had created
all of the papers myself using ScrapSimple Paper Templates.
Now, I liked the papers and the color palette; however, they really
did not do much for this picture I took of majestic El Capitan in Yosemite.
I think the picture is too small for the layout, and I made one of
the classic beginner mistakes of placing my picture right in the center
of the layout. There are times you can do that and times you can’t.
This was one of the times you can’t. I wanted to redo this layout
to give this picture the respect it deserves. Here is my original.
My Do Over

The first design change I made was to use the original color photo
rather than the black and white, because there was a very pretty blue
sky, and it was autumn, so there were some interesting rusty goldish-brown
colors in the photo. I chose to start my background with "EHI_ChicEmbroid_12x12_Solid-Brown.jpg"
from Erica’s Chic Embroidery Solids Paper Mini.

I didn’t
want to entirely throw out my black and white photo, so I layered it
on top of my background paper, enlarged it to fit my 12x12 canvas,
and changed the Blend Mode to "Overlay" and the Opacity to 63%. This
added texture to the background to mimic the extreme texture in El
Capitan.

I wanted to beef up the colors in my photo, so I duplicated
the layer, changed the Blend Mode to "Overlay" and merged the layers
together to drag onto my layout. I tried the "Burn" and "Multiply"
Blend Modes first, but I liked the look that "Overlay" gave me the
best.

I wanted to add some more texture and roughness to the layout,
so I decided to use one of the ScrapSimple Mixed Media Embellishment
Templates for this. I dragged one of the paint strokes onto my
layout and sized it the way I wanted it. Then I moved the layer underneath
my photo and created a clipping mask by right clicking on the photo
and selecting “Create
Clipping Mask” from the fly-out menu.

Next I wanted to add some
embellishments, but I didn’t want
to add too many, just enough to enhance the layout without distracting
from the photo I was trying to show off. I chose a Swirl from the Syndee’s
Cinnamon Suede Collection, a Blue Flower from Angie’s
Day to Day Life Collection to echo the blue sky in the photo,
and Word Art from Thao’s Nature Quotes Word Art Stickers that
reflected my exact thoughts when I took this picture.
Finally, I anchored
my embellishment cluster by slipping the Cheesecloth Frame from
Brandy’s
A Little Worn out Collection underneath. I added my journaling
using the Civilian Font in a tan color and changed the Blend Mode
on the font layer to "Hard Light."

to warm up before exercising, so try this with me. Open your

Remember to repeat your stretching exercises
as necessary throughout the month!

and the story behind it posted to the March gallery before
midnight EST on March 31st and you could win $10 to the boutique!
Mid-March Layout

It's time for you to stop playing
catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more
advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital
scrapbookers doing.
- Take the world's easiest shortcuts to
creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
- Make sure that you don't make the biggest
mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
- Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap
Girls ScrapSimple products.
- Dip your digital scrapbooking self into
some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there waiting
in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing
pen, and more.
- See how easy it is to install and manage
new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make
things that are creative and unique.
- Learn advanced tricks for using tools that
you already know and love.
- Watch me make some beautiful papers and
get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That
is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you
do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers.
It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers.
Very private stuff.)
- See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm
betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do
that with, too...)
- Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets.
(You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating
you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder
why you haven't been using it all along.)
- Find out why Custom Shapes are so important
to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
- Learn how to cut out a title from a background
or a photo.
- And even more...
Note: These are NOT beginning
tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop
before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software,
you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers,
where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills
that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook

to use it. |

Ten Beginner Tips on Type |
|
|

If you're creating a digital
scrapbooking layout, it's almost guaranteed that you'll be
using type on your pages somewhere. But did you know that type
can make or break your page? What typeface will you use? What
size font? Where will you place it on your page?
If you want to take some beginner
steps towards improving the type on your layouts, and thereby
improving the overall look of your layouts, then this eBook is
perfect for you. It's written in a very simple style, focusing
on one digitally scrapbooked layout while walking you through

Ro personally uses Carbonite
to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives,
it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents
on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date
at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing
important business and financial files, because the backup happens
without Ro having to do a single thing.
