Customer Muse: God is Listening

I was married in 1980 and I have to say that I didn’t do what all of my peers were doing at the time – making a list that always seemed to have “children” at the end of it. Of course, before children, came buying a house, traveling, getting established... you know, all the usual “get yourself settled” stuff. I was determined that children would come first on my list.

With great pleasure, I went off the pill during my first year of marriage. With a rather reluctant husband, who wasn’t quite sure that he was ready for parenthood, I convinced him that all would be well. One year went by, then two and then three, when finally we decided to head for the doctor. Following numerous tests, we were told the news that we had less than 1% chance of being able to conceive naturally. Problems appeared on both sides, so there was no singular guilt attached – we were both equally devastated.

We were also still very young and were told to keep trying. Four years, then five, six and seven went by when we were accepted on the IVF program. Remember, we’re back in the 1980’s, so the procedures were still very new and success was around 17%. This was far better than our 1% naturally so we made the long trip to Sydney for our first attempt in 1987.

The years preceding this were exactly described by Barbarita Lee (November 17th Muse) – pregnant women seemed to be everywhere. No matter where I was, there was a pregnant woman. I also remember late nights by myself in the living room crying and praying the usual question – WHY? Why were we going through this? Why do others find it so easy? Why us? We had so much love for each other; the natural progression was that a child be born into this happy home. Please God, let this program be successful.

We eventually had five attempts spanning 16 months. I kept a diary of the agony that we shared after each failed attempt. Carefully documented are the procedures we went through and the emotional rollercoaster we seemed to find ourselves on. On Mother’s Day in 1988, I had four fertilized eggs implanted with the new ZIFT (Zygote Intra Fallopian Transfer) program. Five were frozen for a future attempt. Nine days later, I got a period so there went another failed attempt. But for some reason, I was not so devastated this time. Even though we had run out of money and couldn’t return for some time, I just knew that God had put this program before us and this was how He was going to get us pregnant. My husband, on the other hand, was shattered this time and couldn’t face the thought of another attempt.

We hardly spoke and so went about reclaiming a little normality in our lives. A week later, I started getting symptoms of pregnancy. My husband immediately phoned the doctor for a blood test, at which I vehemently refused. I tried to explain to him that having the test was only getting our hopes up and I didn’t want another needle in my arm. He dragged me to the pathologist kicking and complaining.

An hour later, my doctor phoned with the news that we were pregnant! I was stunned. They must have got the tests mixed up and it belongs to someone else. After all we’d been through, it was as though I couldn’t enjoy the news we had long waited for. What if something went wrong?

Christian was born nine months and two weeks later in February 1989.

In April 1989, we went back to “use up” the frozen embryos, in case it took us a number of years to achieve a little baby sister or brother. Three zygotes were thawed, all A1 quality and I saw them under the microscope before they were implanted. Four cells, fuzzy around the edges and it was amazing to think that this was the beginning of life!

To our surprise, we achieved not one sibling for Christian out of these, but two – a brother (Dane) and a sister (Rebecca). So with three children under two, I had my work well and truly cut out for me.

Nine months later, we lost our family business, and with that, we lost just about everything we owned to stave off bankruptcy. Moving to a city where my husband could find work, we lived in a rented house until we could find something affordable.

Then, the inevitable happened. This time, through the aid of a home pregnancy test kit, I found that I was expecting yet another baby. Hubby was delighted, he had finally achieved a homemade one – all I could do was cry. How was I going to cope with four under four years old? My mother always said that God doesn’t give you anything that you can’t handle, so all would be well. And it was. Nicola was born the most beautiful and placid baby of all. They are all now teenagers 18, 16 and 15... so the going gets tough occasionally. But, I always say, be careful for what you pray for – GOD IS LISTENING!

- Jo-Anne Wells

Are you ready for a workout? It's important to warm up before exercising, so try this with me. Open your hands and stretch your fingers as wide as they'll stretch. Now make a very tight fist. It's time to put those fingers to the test and get chatty. We want to see you post the most! The top 10 posters this month will each win a gift certificate to the boutique! (Top 1-3 will each get a $10 GC, 4-6 will each get a $5 GC and 7-10 will each get a $3 GC!) We've got a system to keep track of your posts. If you want to keep your own tally, note your post count before you start posting on Saturday March 1st. Contest ends on Monday March 31st at midnight ET!

Remember to repeat your stretching exercises as necessary throughout the month!

March Layout Contests:

Post your layout to the mid-month gallery by midnight EST on April 14th, and if your layout is chosen, you will win a $10 Gift Certificatae to the Boutique!

MORE Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed!

*NEW!* MORE Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed! for Adobe Photoshop (Versions 6, 7, CS, CS2, CS3)

MORE Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed! for Adobe Photoshop Elements versions 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0 & 6.0

It's time for you to stop playing catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital scrapbookers doing.

  • Take the world's easiest shortcuts to creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
  • Make sure that you don't make the biggest mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
  • Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap Girls ScrapSimple products.
  • Dip your digital scrapbooking self into some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there waiting in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing pen, and more.
  • See how easy it is to install and manage new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make things that are creative and unique.
  • Learn advanced tricks for using tools that you already know and love.
  • Watch me make some beautiful papers and get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
  • See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do that with, too...)
  • Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets. (You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all along.)
  • Find out why Custom Shapes are so important to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
  • Learn how to cut out a title from a background or a photo.
  • And even more...

Note: These are NOT beginning tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers, where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed series before you try to use it.
