Life Muses by Ro: Beauty in Surrender
In between the Boutique upgrade and personal issues (remember “The
Door” incident from Tuesday’s newsletter?) last week, I
simply did not have time to write any muses for the newsletter this
week. So, I’m taking this opportunity to bring you some of my “Best
of Ro” muses. Enjoy!

“Many of the great achievements of the world were accomplished by tired and discouraged men who kept on working.” – Anonymous
Nearly 50 years have passed since I was placed in my mother’s arms one cold November day in 1957. During the years since, through unwilling observation, I have discovered that as soon as I become slightly comfortable with my life’s situation, it shifts and I am thrust into the unknown, where I must struggle to figure out my next move.
I wish I could tell you that I go willingly into the next phase of learning, but I typically do not. When I discover life events that cause me to make the choice to either rise to the occasion and overcome the new obstacle, or sit down on a bench and cry about what has just happened, I long to cry about what has just happened. I often wander around my house complaining to my husband about the unfairness of it all. I call my friends and ask them to listen to my moaning and groaning. In other words, I engage in an internal struggle to change what has happened. It is a fruitless exercise to send me back to my former peaceful state.
When I was young, the battle occurred because I thought it was unnecessary to struggle in that manner. Now, the battle occurs because I am getting tired of constantly clawing my way up and out again.
After a while, I arrive at a turning point of decision: I decide I am not going to let the bump in the road throw me into a ditch. I decide that I am going to do whatever it takes to beat the problem into submission so that I can get on with my life.
There is beauty in the surrender. It is actually at that moment that peace returns. Yes, I realize that it is ironic that I engage in a struggle to keep myself in a place of peace and it is that struggle that is preventing me from feeling peace.
Sometimes, I wonder if persistence – the trait that separates those who overcome, with those who do not – is that those who are persistent exhibit willingness to submit to challenges. They rise to the occasion and beat their problems into submission. There is peace in persistence. Strength comes when we take on the willingness to do whatever it takes to make it work, even the solution is quite different than we formerly imagined.
Let no man think that sudden, in a minute,
All is accomplished, and the work is done
Though with thine earliest dawn thou should’st begin it.
Scare were it ended in the settling sun. - Anonymous
There is no rest for the weary, partially because the weary understand why they must not rest – too long.
Have a very persistent day
- Ro

for publication in the Scrap Girls newsletter, you'll get to have
fun shopping!
Muse: To be absorbed in one's thoughts;
engage in meditation. Not intended to solve the world's problems,
another person's problems, or to cover topics completely. One does
not have to agree with musings to enjoy them just as one does not
have to be the same as someone else to appreciate who they are.

Tutorial: Fixing a Blue Photo in Photoshop Elements
Note: Tutorial created using Photoshop Elements 5 with Windows XP.
You may not know it, but if you own a copy of Photoshop Elements, you have a powerful photo editing tool. I know you think that Photoshop Elements is only a powerful digital scrapbooking tool (which it is) but you may be amazed what it can do with a bad photo.
This photo surfaced on the message board.

Scrappinchar had taken some wonderful photos of her children, but it was a cloudy morning and the lighting was less than desirable. Although the subjects in this photo are wonderful, the blue hue makes the photo dull and puts harsh shadows on the children’s faces. You may be tempted to go straight to the Brightness and Contrast menu box, but an experienced Photoshop user will tell you that this feature is taboo! Stay away from it. It can never give you the depth of control that you can get from other Elements features.
To start fixing this photo, open your version of Photoshop Elements (for this tutorial, I am using PSE 5). Then, open the photo you wish to fix.

Next, go to Enhance. In the drop-down menu, click Adjust Smart Fix.

Adjust your smart fix value, using the slider, until the faces are visible and the blue hue disappears. You will want to have the Preview box checked so that you can see the changes as you make them. In this case, 86% seems to be the proper value.

Already the photo shows great improvement. However, we can still make those precious faces pop just a bit more.
Go to Enhance again and this time click on Adjust Lighting. An additional drop-down menu will appear. Click on Levels.

There are a few sliders in this menu box. We will only be concerned with those under the bar graph in the box. Grab the slider on the far right and slide it to the left until it reaches the spot where the graph begins it’s upwards trend. (I have drawn in that spot with a green line.) Again, be sure that the Preview box is checked so that you can watch your fix in action.

For further improvements, grab the middle slider and move it either right or left, depending on the photo that you are improving. This will give additional lighting at mid levels. It should really help those faces to pop!

Here is your newly edited photo. Make sure to save it, giving it a different name than the original, in case you want to go in and play further with the original photo.

This can be enhanced further. Since we adjusted the Smart Fix and the Levels, we have washed out what blue there was in the morning sky. This can be easily fixed as well.
In PSE5, select the Magic Wand tool from the toolbar to the left.

Using the default values, select the large portion of sky to the left of the photo.
Notice that this will just select that portion of the sky. It will not select the sky in between the tree branches. To select the remainder of these sky pieces, go to Select and then click Similar.
This will select the remainder of the sky area, but may also grab other areas of blue that you don’t want to adjust. To “deselect” the areas that you don’t wish to adjust, select the Lasso tool in your toolbar and select the “subtract from selection” icon in the horizontal toolbar at the top of your screen.
Now, just draw a lasso around the areas that you wish to deselect.
The sky is now fully selected.
To adjust the sky, go to Enhance, then to Adjust Color, and then to Adjust Hue/Saturation.
Start by sliding the Lightness slider to the left just a smidge. Then, slide the Saturation slider to the right until the blue begins to reappear in the sky.
Click OK when you are finished.
From here you can go to Select and click Deselect.
Your photo is finished. Now, take a look at the before and after!

March Board Game: Posting Contest
Are you ready for a workout? It's important
to warm up before exercising, so try this with me. Open your
hands and stretch your fingers as wide as they'll stretch.
Now make a very tight fist. Again.... Stretch! Make a fist!
Stretch! Make a fist! There you go! You're now sufficiently
warmed up for this month's message board game.
It's time to put those fingers to the test
and get chatty. We want to see you post the most! The top 10
posters this month will each win a gift certificate to the
boutique! (Top 1-3 will each get a $10 GC, 4-6 will each get
a $5 GC and 7-10 will each get a $3 GC!) We've got a system
to keep track of your posts. If you want to keep your own tally,
note your post count before you start posting on Saturday March
1st. Contest ends on Monday March 31st at midnight ET!
Remember to repeat your stretching exercises
as necessary throughout the month!

March Layout Contests:
Layout
Contest: This month we want to see your
layouts of people or things that are on the move! It could
be a great action sports shot, someone running a marathon,
or even a child running through the grass. It could even
be your pet flying across your photo. So, give us your
best action shot and the story behind it posted to the
March gallery before midnight EST on March 31st and you
could win $10 to the boutique!
Mid-February
Layout Contest: Faith is a very powerful attribute.
On the Scrap Girls Message Board, we have all witnessed the
power of faith. For the Mid-February Layout Contest, we’d
like to see your layouts about faith…your religion,
a leap of faith, your faith in another person or object…whatever
moves you. The contest will run from February 15th until
March 15th at midnight, EST time. To be eligible to win a
$10 gift card to the boutique, please post your layouts in
the Mid-February Layout Contest section of the Gallery. Have
fun and Good Luck!

Ro personally uses Carbonite to
back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives,
it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important
documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely
up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying
about losing important business and financial files, because
the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
