Life Muses by Ro: Mistakes Do Not Define Who We Are
In between the Boutique upgrade and personal issues (remember “The
Door” incident from Tuesday’s newsletter?) last week, I
simply did not have time to write any muses for the newsletter this
week. So, I’m taking this opportunity to bring you some of my “Best
of Ro” muses. Enjoy!

Dashing off a few sentences in an email to my partner about an issue we are managing, I hit the “Send” button on my email client. Immediately, I was hit with a sick feeling. Something didn’t feel right.
“No. That couldn’t be right. I couldn’t have done that.”
I looked around the room for something to do so I didn’t have to be brave and face the mistake I might have just made. I wanted an escape hatch.
Gingerly, I clicked on my “Out” box and peered inside. Who had I sent that email to?
When I opened the email I wasn’t quite sure, initially. The name in the recipient’s field was my partner’s name. “Good,” I breathed. “Whew!”
But then, I noticed something odd. The actual email address didn’t belong to my partner. It was the email address of the individual we are working with.
Grateful that I hadn’t been rude in my initial response (I try never to be rude and in this case, there was no reason to be), I sent a follow up email explaining that I didn’t realize I was sending my email to her, that my email was meant to give my partner some information she would then use.
I received a reply from the individual I had emailed by mistake and from her tone, I was unable to ascertain whether she was offended, thought I was a complete nut, or if everything was completely okay. The unease I am feeling following the exchange may simply be because I am mad at myself for goofing up.
While considering why I have been so upset at myself for making such a simple mistake, I realized it is these public mistakes I worry about most. I have heard on multiple occasions that the single thing every human being wants most out of life is to feel loved and accepted. When we make public mistakes we risk losing acceptance, and so it hits us at our core. We begin to “mind-read” – a common error in which we suppose others feel as negatively about us as we do ourselves.
We think such things as:
-
“She must think I’m a dork.”
-
“I’m sure I look unprofessional to her.”
-
“She won’t want to work with me now.”
-
“She will tell her co-workers how rude I was.”
When we tell ourselves these things, we eventually work ourselves into a state of despair and hopelessness. We feel we are unable to win the approval of others because we are flawed. We may even become angry when other people cannot accept us for who we are or we become offended that they are unable to forgive us for our mistakes.
But if we are living full lives and working towards goals and dreams, we are certain to make mistakes on a regular basis. It is as certain we will make mistakes as it is certain we will pay taxes and that we will eventually die. In fact, the people who try too hard not to make mistakes become so tense, fearful, and overly concerned about other people’s reactions, that they won’t try anything at all. And in choosing to hold back, they are making the biggest mistake of all: They are not living.
I finally realized all I can do at this point is let my misdirected email disappear into the big pot of personal mistakes I have made in my life. The pot gets bigger and bigger as I go along, but I am learning more and more, as well. I am learning that:
-
When I am being too hard on myself, I find it more difficult to let other people’s errors slide off my back.
-
The better I am at forgiving my own mistakes, the easier it is to let other people’s goofs slip away without a second thought.
-
Most of the time, other people are too concerned about their own lives to worry about my mistakes.
-
When other people become overly concerned about my mistakes, it is symptomatic that they are having trouble forgiving their own mistakes.
Mistakes do not define who you are.
I hope you take that thought, write it down, pin it to a wall, memorize it, and believe it.
Mistakes do not define who you are…But what you choose to do following a mistake can.

Way Cool Stuff Product
Review: Embellishment Templates
Instead of colorizing elements and shapes on your scrapbook pages, try a new technique and use patterns to fill them. I haven't played with this too much, but once I started it was WAY COOL! Start with selecting a shape you want to fill. I used the magic wand tool. There are so many ways you can be creative with the embellishment templates here at Scrapgirls.
The store here is full of fun, cool and beautiful templates in so many shapes, and they are screaming for creative scrappers to play with them!
I have already made myself a collection of my favorite templates, and one of them are the heart templates from Durin Eberhart. Before, I always had problems finding the perfect heart for the situation. But it's not a problem anymore. And they are so versatile!
You can add a layer style to them, you can color them with your favorite color. Or you can do like me, fill them with your favorite paper!
For this layout I wanted to make my own journaling tabs, but I couldn't find the perfect ones. As you can see from the title, this layout is about how much I love this little girl and her "stunts", so I wanted to emphasize this in some way. I came up with these hearts again.
I layered the different hearts over the layout after I had made my design with all the photos.
I thought she was so cute with this dress, so I found a paper I thought looked similar to the dress, changed the saturation on it (so it would match my other design and the photos) and filled the hearts with this paper by usin CTRL-ALT-G.
But this paper did not fit for journaling, as it had a lot of pattern on it. So I duplicated the hearts layers, but made these hearts smaller because I still wanted to see the beautiful patterned paper. The smaller hearts were filled with a paper colored with my daughters favorite color; Pink! A "journaling-friendly" solid paper.
I filled these beautiful and funky hearts with the story of this day when my daughter stole my shoes and took her teddy under her arms to visit a friend. So cute!
And to complete the layout, I added some heart buttons to really underline my message. These heart buttons I simply changed the hue and saturation, because I loved them just as they were.
With the packs of different heart templates, I really got to make this layout as cute and "loveable" as I wanted it to be.

a $5 GC and 7-10 will each get a $3 GC!) We've got a system
to keep track of your posts. If you want to keep your own tally,
note your post count before you start posting on Saturday March
1st. Contest ends on Monday March 31st at midnight ET!
Remember to repeat your stretching exercises
as necessary throughout the month!

March Layout Contests:
Layout
Contest: This month we want to see your
layouts of people or things that are on the move! It could
be a great action sports shot, someone running a marathon,
or even a child running through the grass. It could even
be your pet flying across your photo. So, give us your
best action shot and the story behind it posted to the
March gallery before midnight EST on March 31st and you
could win $10 to the boutique!
Mid-February
Layout Contest: Faith is a very powerful attribute.
On the Scrap Girls Message Board, we have all witnessed the
power of faith. For the Mid-February Layout Contest, we’d
like to see your layouts about faith…your religion,
a leap of faith, your faith in another person or object…whatever
moves you. The contest will run from February 15th until
March 15th at midnight, EST time. To be eligible to win a
$10 gift card to the boutique, please post your layouts in
the Mid-February Layout Contest section of the Gallery. Have
fun and Good Luck!

Ro personally uses Carbonite to
back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives,
it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important
documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely
up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying
about losing important business and financial files, because
the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.

forever. Just get a plan for managing what will happen someday

up in case one of them fail. Acronis True Image 11.0 is Ro's personal choice for creating a complete back up (software,
