Life Muses by Ro: Doing Whatever I Want
In between the Boutique upgrade and personal issues (remember “The
Door” incident from Tuesday’s newsletter?) last week, I
simply did not have time to write any muses for the newsletter this
week. So, I’m taking this opportunity to bring you some of my “Best
of Ro” muses. Enjoy!

Smooth grey skin slid under my skin as I unsuccessfully tried to push
the animal through the opening in the net. I didn’t understand.
The trainer told me that it would be simple to swim from one side of
the tank to the other with my dolphin. Once we arrived there, we would
pass through the net to the next tank. But as hard as I tried to pull
on the dolphin, he was resisting my efforts.
He clearly didn’t want
to go anywhere with me.
Finally, I swam to the side of the tank, pulled
myself up on the cement and looked disgustedly down at the animal. “You
think you’re
so smart,” I muttered.
“Apparently, he is smarter than you.”
I squinted at the
trainer who was grinning at me. “I guess I
need more help than I thought. How do I do this?”
“You are trying to force that animal to do what you want it
to do. Nothing likes to be forced... water... air... people... Nature
has free will and that dolphin does, too. You have to win the cooperation
of the dolphin by allowing him to do what he does best. Try trusting
him. Try treating him better. See where it takes you.”
When I
got back into the water with the dolphin, he warily swam up next to
me and eyed me as if to say, “Are you going to start
swinging again?” I carefully reached out my hand and stroked
his side. When he swam away, I patiently waited for him to return.
When he did, I talked calmly to him and petted him.
At last, he decided
that I was not going to wage war after all. He allowed me to grab hold
of his fin and off we went, speeding across the tank and through the
net. I was going to get to see what was in the other tank. As we sped
through the opening, I heard my husband say, “What would you
like for breakfast, dear?”
Darn.
It was just a dream.
I pulled my pillow on top of my head and told
him I’d be out
in a bit because I needed to think a little. This dream reminded me
of something and I wanted to figure out what it was.
As I quickly thumbed
through the pages of my life book, I stopped on page 1521 – which
falls somewhere after my 4th birthday. I saw myself playing dolls with
one of my friends in my room. This sounds pretty routine, right? A
four-year-old girl playing dolls with a friend?
Well, it wasn’t
actually. You see, I was the only girl in my family and the only girl
in my neighborhood. This meant that my activities consisted mainly
of playing cowboys, digging holes with shovels, jumping off barns,
putting pollywogs in band-aid cans, or swimming in ditches.
If I wanted
to play dolls, I had to force someone to play dolls with me.
On this
particular day, day 1521, I chose to beat my pal over the head with
my doll until he agreed to be the father of the doll so that I could
be the mother. (Happily for my pal, his family moved away shortly after
this occurrence. He was released from his doll family obligations at
that time.)
I learned to be scrappy as a child because I had to be scrappy
or I wouldn’t survive among all those individuals, the males
of our species. I learned that I often had to force my way into a situation
because those same individuals were just as inclined to ignore me because
I was female.
Shoot! I do not like to be ignored.
Fast forward to day 17,864 in my
life book....
I have stopped trying to force people to play dolls with
me. I have stopped trying to force anyone to do anything. If they don’t
want to cooperate, they are fine. They can just get out of my game.
But
I am good at forcing myself to do things. In fact, I seem to like to
force myself to get from point A to point B and break the sound barrier
in the process. When I am close to achieving one of my business goals,
I really like the effect of the sonic boom as I slide over the finish
line.
Boom! There goes a goal from my list.
Boom! Boom! That was a big one.
I knocked off a whole page of to-do’s
when I completed that goal.
Boom! Boom! Boom! Wow-ee! I’m excited
about that one. That took a lot of work. (It is completely beside the
point that I am now so exhausted that I need an intravenous drip of
chocolate to get me pepped up enough to answer the telephone.)
I get
excited about what I am doing. This is because - for the first time
in my life - I can do whatever I want. I get to use the brain that
God gave me to build a business I believe in. Before I started Scrap
Girls, I spent most of my adult years out there in that male-focused
business world and found that I was either ignored (because good ideas
can’t come from people who play with dolls) or, when I got scrappy
enough to try to get my ideas heard, I was told that I should play
nice (because people who play with dolls aren’t supposed to play
the business game like a boy does).
Shoot! I don’t like to be
ignored.
So when my life changed completely a couple of years ago and
dropped my mentally ill adult son and grandson in my lap (with the
court advising me that I better stay home and make sure they were both
okay), I decided that I was getting a big message from the universe.
It was time for me to step off of a cliff and start doing what I wanted
to do.
I went for broke – literally. I sold off nearly everything
we had of value (including my 1770 German violin) to raise the money
I needed to start the company. I cornered the peanut butter and jelly
market so we would have something to eat for lunch. And I began building
the Scrap Girls web site on my laptop.
So here we are now – Scrap
Girls is built and we are doing great. I am having a ball. Actually,
I am having so much fun that I am beginning to have contests with myself
where I say, “Let’s
see just how fast I can type. Let’s see how quickly I can spin
in my chair. Let’s find out how many of the ideas that drip out
of my head and into the notebooks stacked all over my office counter
I can implement this week.”
And then, while I am whirling and
spinning and spiraling about, my little self starts to rebel and shout
out, “What are you doing
to yourself? Why are you forcing yourself to work all of the time?”
I
can tell when I’ve gotten myself into a work-frenzied jam
fairly easily. The key symptom is that my brain begins moving about
like a street carnival when my body tries to lie down at night for
much needed sleep. The body wants to quiet down but my brain is enjoying
the addicting “Boom! Boom! Boom!” of achieving goals so
much that it wants to keep playing the game 24 hours a day.
The solution:
Do something else.
And so I start going out here and there: I go to
a movie. I see a play. I wander the streets. I paint my house. I hang
out and do nothing. Frankly, I can now do what I want with my time
because I am now in charge of my life and my schedule. Nobody is telling
me that someone who plays with dolls can’t be in charge.
Awesome.
So when I start having a little too much fun running this
outfit and my brain is whirling too much, I just break up my regular
routine enough that my brain knows it is okay to stop thinking about
business every hour of every day.
You might be scratching your head
right now wondering how a little girl from a small town who once enjoyed
jumping off barns could end up having so much fun running a business.
It’s
simple.
Nobody is ignoring me anymore – not even myself.

Tutorial: Adding Wings to Photos
Note: Tutorial was created using Adobe
Photoshop CS2 with Windows XP.
Adding wings to your photos can add a touch of whimsy and fun to your
digital scrapbooking layouts. They are great with themes about babies,
children, springtime, heritage, fantasy or romance. There are wing
embellishments in several Scrap Girls products including the following:

Let’s begin by opening a photo and dragging it onto a new 12x12
file. I recommend a frontal view for the easiest application. Open
a set of wing embellishments. Here, I will be using “Wings1Left.png” and “Wings1Right.png” from
the Art Journal Collection Biggie. Drag these wings onto the
new file, above the photo.

Now, select the layer with the first wing
and set the Opacity to 70%. This will make it semi-transparent so that
you can nudge the wing to where you want it. Repeat this for the second
wing.

Next, zoom into the first wing. With your Lasso Tool (with Anti-Alias
on and a Feather level of 1 px), select the area of the wing that covers
the body of the person in your photo.

Delete this part of the wing layer.

Repeat this for the second wing
layer.

Reset the Opacity of both wing layers to 100%. Next, to soften
the edges of the cut edges, use the Eraser Tool and select a basic
round brush and adjust the settings. Here, I’ve placed the Diameter
size at 60 px, Hardness at 50% and Opacity at 20%.

Carefully erase part
of the edge to soften. You will not need to erase much, just a little
to soften the wings’ edges.

Then, choose the Burn Tool and set
its Exposure low, such as at 10%.

Carefully go over the edges again.
This will give the edges, where it touches the body, a darker, shadowy
look.

Here’s my finished photo.

An alternative to placing wings this
way is to select and eliminate all of the background around the person
so that the wings are easily placed underneath the person. This latter
method requires using the Lasso and Eraser Tools to cut around the
entire person in the photo.

It's time for you to stop playing

advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital

- Make sure that you don't make the biggest
mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
- Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap

It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers.
Very private stuff.)
- See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm

- Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets.
(You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating

why you haven't been using it all along.)
- Find out why Custom Shapes are so important
to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
- Learn how to cut out a title from a background
or a photo.
- And even more...
Note: These are NOT beginning
tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop
before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software,
you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers,
where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills
that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook
Software Secrets Revealed series before you try
to use it. |

Ro personally uses Carbonite
to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives,
it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents
on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date
at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing
important business and financial files, because the backup happens
without Ro having to do a single thing.
