Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To make the embellishment and wordart scattering down the left side, I opened the two leaf embellishments that came in the Stylize collection and duplicated them until I had five, one for each word. Then I rotated them at different angles and spread them down the side of the layout. Then I made individual text boxes where I placed the title words. I wanted the words to look like they were stamped onto the leaves, so I used Shalae’s Stamped style on the words.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To be sure I had aligned edges along the photo, ribbon and paper, I merged these layers together, then deleted the excess at each side guaranteeing me a nice, aligned edge.

Name of challenge: Non-Holiday Layout
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I loved the fun stripes, circles and patterns of this paper. Once I put it on my layout, I did not care for the red color in the patterns. I used my magic wand tool, with the contiguous setting off, to select the red. I then used the lighten option of Enhance>Adjust Color>Color Variations to lighten the red until it was a shade of pink that suited my layout.

Name of challenge: Non-holiday layout using holiday collection
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
The frame brushwork appeared kind of flat, so I wanted to add some texture to give it a bit of a stamped look. I used the Texturizer filter to accomplish this. I applied a Sandstone Texture with a Scaling of 81% and then I added a tiny dropshadow to complete the look.

Name of challenge: Holiday themed collection for non-holiday layout
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I made color blocks with my rectangle shape, and then clipped papers to it. Then I layered on some stitches. I put a frame in the middle, then decorated it with buttons, and then I layered the alphas and resized them to fit. Last I created the journaling and put drop shadows on all the layers and embellishments.

Name of layout: Cousins
Software used: PSE 4.0
Name of challenge: Non-holiday layout using holiday collection
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I really liked the swirls from Thao Cosgrove's Affection Collection but I wanted to change the color and use them as a brush, or stamp. On my layout, I opened a new layer and selected the brush tool. I then opened the swirl's PNG file and under the Edit menu, chose Define Brush from Selection. Then I stamped the swirl onto my layout!

A Designer's Life: Melissa Renfro
Finally, a project I could finish
I used to start cross-stitch projects. That’s it, just start
them. I used to start pictures to paint with watercolors. I
loved to start craft projects and gather up all my supplies. I
started some stained glass projects once. I even started a king-sized
quilt for my bed ten years ago. I enjoy planning out a
new project. I love the idea of giving a handcrafted gift to
a friend. So, why is it that all these projects sit unfinished
in the dark corners of my craft closet?
I would like to blame motherhood,
that I just got too busy with being a mom, and never finished them.
But I am afraid it started way before I could use that excuse. Perhaps
when I was in college I was so busy studying that it was too far down
on my priority list. No,
that couldn’t be it. It is a thread of creative bursts
that, well, fell a little flat.
After my third son was born, I had this
idea that I would love to do a REAL baby book for him. I
had never really paper scrapped. I had made a few calendars
with my digital pictures, but didn’t have any real paper supplies.
One
night, I was invited to a paper scrapbooking party, the kind where
everyone was supposed to bring some supplies to share and everyone
would work on a page. I found myself with nothing to bring! How
could I have forgotten to go to the store? Perhaps I could find
something on the computer that I could print out and take with me.
So, off I went, Googling printable scrapbook supplies. What
I found that night was not just a printable page of cute baby boy titles,
I found a whole new world!
I downloaded a bunch of free files to play
with, and started to play in Digital Image Pro. I went to a
chat where there was a “theme” for
a scrapbook page and I thought to myself, “I can do this.” I
sat down and made my first page in one hour! I finished it! I posted
it in the gallery with my name on it! I e-mailed the link to
my mother to show her the wonderful page I had done. I had to
find out when the next chat was!
That summer, I was obsessed with speed
scraps and inspiration chats. I
made layout after layout and read all the tutorials. I found an outlet
for all of those creative moments, and I was preserving moments for our family
to cherish. I didn’t have a lot of money at the time to spend on
scrapbooking supplies, so I started making my own. I read tutorials and
would just practice and practice.
That summer, we were able to go on a six week
sabbatical. It was such a refreshing
time for our family and for me. I was at a point in my life
where I was really learning more about who God created me to be. I
knew that God creates each person to be unique, different, special.
I knew that as an individual, God had given me gifts and talents
that would help me to fulfill the call that he had on my life. I
had pursued and developed my gifts for teaching and ministry through
the church we worked for. I was learning to be a
mother and a better wife. But there was one little area that
had been greatly left out. There were still all those unfinished
projects in the corner.
Creating scrapbook pages and designing digital
scrapbook supplies brought me so much joy and such a sense of accomplishment.
Now HERE was a project that I could FINISH! It was a breath of
fresh air to me. One day when I was online, I saw a message
on the Scrap Girls home page that said they were looking for designers.
Was I good enough? Could I do it? Should I do it? My
husband and I talked about it for a while and I sent in my application.
This was when I met Ro for the first time. The fact was, I wasn’t
good enough, and I didn’t know enough. But Ro saw something
there and was willing to give me a chance. She
gave me the opportunity to develop something that was hidden and locked
away for a long time. I am so thankful that she was willing to take
a chance on me.
Over the years I have learned a lot. I love the creative
challenge. I love being able to preserve the special moments
that we have as a family. I love that I am continuing to discover
the unique way that God has created me, and continuing to grow in my
understanding of God’s will for my life every day. I hope
that my love of creating beauty and beautiful things will help people
see the beauty that God has given us in His love for us, and the plan
that He has for each and every one of us.

Favorite product I've designed:
ScrapSimple Tools – Actions: Photo Basics 5001

Photography has always been something that I love. I enjoyed creating
these actions and I love being able to take photos taken at different
places and times and giving them a cohesive look by applying the actions.

hands and stretch your fingers as wide as they'll stretch.
Now make a very tight fist. Again.... Stretch! Make a fist!
Stretch! Make a fist! There you go! You're now sufficiently
warmed up for this month's message board game.
It's time to put those fingers to the test
and get chatty. We want to see you post the most! The top 10

boutique! (Top 1-3 will each get a $10 GC, 4-6 will each get
a $5 GC and 7-10 will each get a $3 GC!) We've got a system
to keep track of your posts. If you want to keep your own tally,
note your post count before you start posting on Saturday March
1st. Contest ends on Monday March 31st at midnight ET!
Remember to repeat your stretching exercises
as necessary throughout the month!

March Layout Contests:
Layout
Contest: This month we want to see your
layouts of people or things that are on the move! It could
be a great action sports shot, someone running a marathon,
or even a child running through the grass. It could even
be your pet flying across your photo. So, give us your
best action shot and the story behind it posted to the
March gallery before midnight EST on March 31st and you
could win $10 to the boutique!
Mid-February
Layout Contest: Faith is a very powerful attribute.
On the Scrap Girls Message Board, we have all witnessed the
power of faith. For the Mid-February Layout Contest, we’d
like to see your layouts about faith…your religion,
a leap of faith, your faith in another person or object…whatever
moves you. The contest will run from February 15th until
March 15th at midnight, EST time. To be eligible to win a
$10 gift card to the boutique, please post your layouts in
the Mid-February Layout Contest section of the Gallery. Have
fun and Good Luck!

It's time for you to stop playing
catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more
advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital
scrapbookers doing.
-
Take the world's easiest shortcuts to
creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
-
Make sure that you don't make the biggest
mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
-
Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap
Girls ScrapSimple products.
-
Dip your digital scrapbooking self into
some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there waiting
in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing
pen, and more.
-
See how easy it is to install and manage
new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make
things that are creative and unique.
-
Learn advanced tricks for using tools that
you already know and love.
-
Watch me make some beautiful papers and
get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That
is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you
do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers.
It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers.
Very private stuff.)
-
See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm
betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do
that with, too...)
-
Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets.
(You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating
you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder
why you haven't been using it all along.)
-
Find out why Custom Shapes are so important
to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
-
Learn how to cut out a title from a background
or a photo.
-
And even more...
Note: These are NOT beginning
tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop
before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software,
you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers,
where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills
that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook
Software Secrets Revealed series before you try
to use it. |
