Digital Scrapbooking News

Boutique Notice:

Our scheduled Boutique upgrade went through yesterday, and by and large, it went really well. There are only a couple of minor issues to finish up, and then we're completely finished. It will be such a relief... this project has been something I've been working on since September!

The first thing we want to make you aware of is that a few people are having some difficulty using credit cards as payment. This is happening because our boutique is having some hiccups communicating with the credit card processing company. Our tech support is working on this issue, and I will be calling our credit card processing company as soon as they are open to get them working on a complete solution. In the meantime, if you are having trouble paying with a credit card in the next day or two, contact us at [email protected], and we'll help you through it.

A fun new thing we have in our Boutique is hover images! That's right, no more clicking to see the big picture, just put your mouse over what you want to see! The images are supposed to land in the middle of your page, and they will if you give it a try or two, and our tech support is working on getting them to land right the first time.

Also, our search engine has improved a bunch! I was playing with it last night to see what it could do, and I was so happy to be able to type in "grungy frames" and get grungy frame products back in my search! A few tips I have figured out though:

  • If you are searching, please be patient. Our database contains more than 10,000 products. It takes a bit of time to search through that many products to find what you want!
  • I tried to search for "blue striped paper" and it didn't work very well. Because "paper" is such a common term, using it will not bring very good results. However, when I searched for "blue striped," I got several blue striped papers in my search results.
  • Even though our search engine has improved significantly, it still simply does not have the capabilities of a search engine like Google. It can be hard for the engine to understand exactly what you want. If you can't find what you're looking for by searching in the boutique, please come to our message board and ask. Chances are, we have something that will work for what you want!

And last, but certainly not least, we now have the ability to sort our categories by Date. Yes! That means you can see our What's New by the very newest products to the older ones. Or, search your favorite designer's products and see what she (or he!) has put out recently.

Now, go see what all the fuss is about, and have fun exploring!

Life Muses by Ro: Go Over the Wall

Climb over it. Crawl under it. Go around it. There is something great waiting on the other side of the wall you just hit.

If I could translate a baby’s inner discussion as he prepares to launch himself into the world of the upright, it might go something like this:

“Hey! I’ve noticed that other people walk. Walking sure seems faster than this crawling business I am doing. I think I’ll try it.”

Baby crawls over to the couch. “Let me see... How do I do this? I need to stand up.”

Grunt. Grunt. “Let me find something to pull myself up with here.”

Bang.

“That wasn’t it. Maybe I’ll cry a little to get some sympathy.”

Baby looks around to see if he has an audience. “Darn. Mom is looking away right now. Never mind. Let’s give this another go... Maybe the dog will help.”

Bang.

“That didn’t work either. I guess dogs don’t like their hair pulled. Who knew? So much for man’s best friend... Back to the couch, I suppose... Hey, what’s that thing hanging over the edge? I bet I can reach it.”

Bang.

“Note to self: Pillows fall when you pull on them... Sigh... Is Mom looking? I could use a good cry right now. No. Back to the old couch then...”

Grunt.

“Hey! I did it! I can see the room really well now. Oh, yuck! Mom needs to dust the table. I think I’ll go over there and clean it a little bit. But, how? Hmm... Let me see... maybe I can get over there by pulling myself along the side of the couch here. It’s not so far...”

Bang.

“Man. I need to remember to uncross my feet before I try that again. All of this excitement is wearing me out. I’m kind of tired. I think I need a nap.”

Goes to sleep.

The next day...

“Okay, Rover, I’m going to try to get those dust bunnies today. Want to help?”

Rover leaves the room.

“Never mind then... you old dog. I’ll do it without you. The couch will help.”

Baby pulls himself up along side of the couch. “That was easier this time. I’m getting good at this. Yay!”

Claps hands.

Bang.

“Maybe I’m not ready for clapping yet. I’ll leave that for another time. Back to the couch.”

And on and on it goes until one day, when Mother is looking, baby manages to walk the small distance between the couch and the table and starts banging on it. “You walked!” she screams with delight.

The baby laughs with his mother. “Of course, I walked. Aren’t I smart? I never gave up. Let’s clap our hands to celebrate. I’ve got that down, too.”

Unless you have a handicap that prevents it, anyone that can walk did this, too. You didn’t give up trying – you kept grunting and straining and bumping your head - until your feet were transporting you from one place to another.

But, somewhere along the way, things might have changed for you. If so, ask yourself these questions:

  • At what point in your life did it begin to be alright to start giving up when things got hard?

  • At what point in your life did you decide that you can’t get places or finish things or get through hard times?

  • At what point in your life did you decide that God was supposed to give you fried fish with tartar sauce on a pink glass platter instead of making you sit on a river bank and throw in a line?

  • At what point did you decide that if the fish didn’t immediately jump on your line, you weren’t meant to have any fish at all?

My challenge is this: If you have allowed any walls to stop you in the past, learn from the experience and get on with it. If you hit any walls in the future, take a nap if you need it and then get back up and try to get around the barrier. There is something worth having on the other side.

The least of which will be: You did not quit.

Tutorial: Fun with Styles!

Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS3 with Windows Vista.

Styles are an easy and fun way to dress up just about anything relating to digital scrapbooking! Try them on shapes, letters, photos, calendars, ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates and Digital Layout Templates just to name a few. Let’s see some of the quick and fun things you can do with Scrap Girls ScrapSimple Styles.

Here I  have added a newspaper print using ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: News 4901 to ScrapSimple Tools - Shapes Scallops 5401. This would make a great photo matte or journaling spot.

I have added the ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Colored Vellum 5401 to a butterfly shape from ScrapSimple Tools - Shapes: Asian Influence 6301. This gives it a opaque floating look.

Here I added an additional style that gives it a burned into the paper look using
ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Watercolor 4901. These are one of my all-time favorite styles; they are so versatile!

Here I used Keri’s super cute ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: A New Leaf and added Durin’s ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Worn Corduroy 5101 to the
Solid Bird template and then Erica’s Colored Vellum Style (mentioned above) to the more detailed Bird template that acts like an overlay and gives the bird texture and depth.

Erica Hite’s ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates: Plan On It 2 are such a fun and versatile product that I just can’t seem to stop playing with them! Use styles to add a background to your planner pages. Here I used ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Fleur 6301 to add a eye-catching floral design to my planner page. Just apply the style to your planner page (I always use a copy to keep my original intact), then go to your Layers Palette and click on "Pattern Overlay" and choose "Multiply." This will allow the planner to show through. Below are a couple other styles applied to the same planner page.

Here I used Keri’s ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Gingham 5201
to give the planner page a whimsical look.

To get a burned paper look, I used I used Keri’s ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Burned Paper Mini 5201.

Add styles to brushes too! Here I added Durin’s Worn Corduroy Style (mentioned above) to a brush from Erica’s Make A Wish Brush Set 1. This would look so cute on a birthday card for a little boy!

One of my favorite uses for Styles are adding them to words or letters! What a great way to dress up alphas and fonts, and it’s so easy to do. Just look at the different looks you get out of the same font!

And speaking of alphas, we have some wonderful ScrapSimple Alpha Templates in the Boutique just waiting for you to add Styles to! Here I will be using Erica’s ScrapSimple Alpha Templates: Enchanted to add several different Styles to.

Here I have used Shalae’s News Style (mentioned above) to the outline layer of the templates, Erica’s Colored Vellum to the Décor layer and Durin’s Corduroy Style to the actual letters.

I used ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Wrinkled 5101 on the alpha on this example.

On this example I used ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Urban Living Glitter 5501. The possibilities are endless! Think of all the products in the Boutique you can play with!

Happy Stylin’!

March Events

March Board Game: Posting Contest

Are you ready for a workout? It's important to warm up before exercising, so try this with me. Open your hands and stretch your fingers as wide as they'll stretch. Now make a very tight fist. Again.... Stretch! Make a fist! Stretch! Make a fist! There you go! You're now sufficiently warmed up for this month's message board game.

It's time to put those fingers to the test and get chatty. We want to see you post the most! The top 10 posters this month will each win a gift certificate to the boutique! (Top 1-3 will each get a $10 GC, 4-6 will each get a $5 GC and 7-10 will each get a $3 GC!) We've got a system to keep track of your posts. If you want to keep your own tally, note your post count before you start posting on Saturday March 1st. Contest ends on Monday March 31st at midnight ET!

Remember to repeat your stretching exercises as necessary throughout the month!

March Layout Contests:

Layout Contest: This month we want to see your layouts of people or things that are on the move! It could be a great action sports shot, someone running a marathon, or even a child running through the grass. It could even be your pet flying across your photo. So, give us your best action shot and the story behind it posted to the March gallery before midnight EST on March 31st and you could win $10 to the boutique!

Mid-February Layout Contest: Faith is a very powerful attribute. On the Scrap Girls Message Board, we have all witnessed the power of faith. For the Mid-February Layout Contest, we’d like to see your layouts about faith…your religion, a leap of faith, your faith in another person or object…whatever moves you. The contest will run from February 15th until March 15th at midnight, EST time. To be eligible to win a $10 gift card to the boutique, please post your layouts in the Mid-February Layout Contest section of the Gallery. Have fun and Good Luck!

On Saturdays we will be sharing freebies created by you, if they are available. If you are interested in participating, download this PDF with the specifications and you'll be on your way. Please note that if you choose to use any Scrap Girls tools or templates in your submission, commercial licenses for those products are required. (Even our own designers must purchase commercial licenses for any items they wish to use in a non-personal manner!) If your freebie is chosen, you will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Suggest a Challenge, Win a Prize! Have a great idea for a gallery layout challenge? Submit it to [email protected]. If your challenge idea is chosen, you will win a prize (such as a brush set, paper set, embellishment set, etc.). The prize will be a surprise, but you'll be sure to like it because you will get to pick out the one you like best (from the category you'll be assigned to shop in when you are notified that we are going to use your challenge idea). Friday will be Customer Challenge Day so keep an eye out on the message board calendar. It will be fun to see what YOU come up with for us to do!

Note from Ro: Scrap Girls is now giving away birthday gifts to our message board members! Of course, it is a surprise what you will get because birthday presents are always surprises! But you will like it for sure because most people like money... Oops! Did I say that? No. I didn't say that. You did NOT hear me say that.

Anyway, make sure your message board email address is current and that you have the correct date entered into your profile or you'll miss out on the birthday present! (You will only be entering the month and the date so don't be shy. We won't know how old you actually are!)

Check our message board calendar if you have any questions about what is happening at Scrap Girls. All event times are given in Eastern Time Zone unless otherwise noted. MORE Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed! for Adobe Photoshop Elements versions 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0 & 6.0

It's time for you to stop playing catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital scrapbookers doing.

  • Take the world's easiest shortcuts to creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
  • Make sure that you don't make the biggest mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
  • Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap Girls ScrapSimple products.
  • Dip your digital scrapbooking self into some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there waiting in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing pen, and more.
  • See how easy it is to install and manage new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make things that are creative and unique.
  • Learn advanced tricks for using tools that you already know and love.
  • Watch me make some beautiful papers and get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
  • See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do that with, too...)
  • Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets. (You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all along.)
  • Find out why Custom Shapes are so important to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
  • Learn how to cut out a title from a background or a photo.
  • And even more...

Note: These are NOT beginning tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers, where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed series before you try to use it.

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
