Life Muses by Ro: Who’s that Lady in the Newsletter?
I tried to sneak it in. I thought I could merely swap it out and that
would be it. I supposed that it would be a minor blip in Internet history...
a blink of a tiny eye... that it would go unnoticed. I believed
that if it did get noticed, the person that saw it would go, “Oh,
new one... interesting.” And, that would be it.
I was wrong.
I believe I’m like most people in one regard: I
am not wild about taking and selecting an “official” photo
of myself that will be used in an official capacity to represent me
to the world. There is a lot of pressure when selecting this photo
because people look at it and make assumptions and judgments about
you based on its appearance.
I have felt the pressure of having an appropriate
official photo in my bio, the newsletter, and elsewhere on our site
because, well, I am attempting to communicate that I am someone that
can be trusted to lead a company such as Scrap Girls. And, I want you
to believe that I am a real individual – not some Internet figment
of imagination.
When I started Scrap Girls in 2004, I used the most
recent official looking photo I had of myself and inserted it here
and there on the site. It was the photo that you are so used to seeing.

In
the last six months, I began to feel uneasy about that photo. For one
thing, I am much older than I was then. For another thing, I feel like
a different person. I also began to be concerned that if you ever met
me you wouldn’t know who I am. I knew that something had
to be done.
A few weeks ago, Valerie and I went back to Arizona to do
some additional planning for the company. We stayed in a location which
has particularly comfortable beds. I had my own room. It had a couch
in a nook that had beautiful, hazy light coming through the window.
I had a relatively new shirt with me that Julianne had picked out (she
is trying to reform me) and I had just gotten my hair done, so it was
fresh and perky. And, I had a brand new camera that needed breaking
in.
It was a formula for a photo session and I took it – literally – as
I take all of my own photos.
When I came home and pulled them into Photoshop,
there was one in particular that I liked very much so I decided that
I would be brave and change out my official site photo. I gave the
new images the old file names, uploaded them to the Scrap Girls web
site and the old pictures disappeared from the planet... pretty
much.
I didn’t anticipate that my new photo would scare people.
A few days later, a brave soul opened a string on the messageboard
entitled, “Who’s
that lady in the newsletter?”
The discussion went on for a while,
each person noting that they weren’t
sure who it was. Perhaps it was Ro, they speculated, but they were
uncertain because this woman looked so different. They were going back
through their newsletters for months trying to find Ro, but all they
could see was the new lady. Where had Ro gone? Had they lost their
minds?
One member assured the rest of them that they had not lost their
minds because she had printed out some of the newsletters. The printed
versions had the old Ro in them.
The speculation continued until I came
along and told them that I am the lady in the newsletter.

Afterwards,
everyone was very kind and gave me compliments, telling me that they
like the new photo. They told me that I look younger in it. But, I
know the truth: I don’t look younger. If you go back
and forth between the two photos you will see that I am not younger
at all. In fact, when I first looked at this set of photos, I was taken
aback because I felt like I was looking at my grandmother’s face.
How had she gotten into Photoshop?
However, I am perfectly content with
my situation and my appearance. I am a 50-year-old woman who feels
much better about herself than the 42-year-old woman ever did. I’m
grateful to be where I am today. I am living a dream that the 42-year-old
woman nearly didn’t
dare to dream. Every day I get up and do the type of things that the
42-year-old woman thought were beyond her reach. And, I see so very
clearly, that all of the blessings I have been given between then and
now are rare gifts that need to be cherished, shined, held, and then
shared with others. I have found many of the answers the 42-year-old
woman was looking for.
I was recently asked, “If you could live
several different lives, what would they be?”
I thought and thought
and thought and thought about what to say. But, I couldn’t come
up with anything other than, “I kind of
like the life I have right now. I think I’ll keep it.”
Is
my life perfect? Absolutely not! The Paxman family has as many family
dramas and traumas as any family out there. I still have the same long-term
illness that I’ve had for 20 years (Fibromyalgia).
I still get stressed out, battle my weight, have issues with uncertainty
and am trying to make something better out of myself.
I think the biggest
difference between the two individuals in these photos is that the
42-year-old woman didn’t understand how blessed
she was. She was looking for something to solve her problems and make
her happy. She was looking for relief and wanted the relief to come
from outside of herself. She thought that if she had a different job,
she would find the happiness she was seeking. Because she was too afraid
to make the change herself, life made it for her. She was laid off
from one job, was let go “because she was too old to fit in” from
another company, and then had an unhappy experience with a third company.
Finally, she started her own business, to try to get her life back
under control.
It took all of the trauma and drama between then and
now for this woman to get it: She now understands how blessed she has
always been. She is not looking for someone to solve her problems and
isn’t
looking for relief, other than the relief she feels during her talks
with God and occasional visits with family members and close confidants.
She now understands that happiness doesn’t come from situations,
where she lives, careers, her neighbors, her house, her clothing, what
her children do or do not do, or if she does or does not have enough
time to do everything she wants to do in a single day. She understands
that life will have ups and downs, but she can be peaceful and happy
most of the time if she is grateful. And, she understands that she
finds far more happiness in sharing than she ever used to have while
trying to receive.
I think the question, “Who is that lady in
the newsletter?” was
perfectly on point.
The woman in the photo in 2001 was named Rozanne.
That is what everyone called her when the photo was taken. Rozanne
wasn’t as happy
as she could have been because she didn’t understand how blessed
she was. She still believed that happiness was linked to circumstances
and events. She thought that if she moved to better circumstances,
she would be happier. She wasn’t amused much and was considered
an extremely serious individual.
The woman in the photo in 2008 is named
Ro. She has been around the block a few times on the way to appreciate
the house she has always owned. In her journeys, she has learned that
she can be happy sitting on a curb, on a couch, on the lawn, or in
a tree. If she is asked to sit on a curb, she will respond by taking
a photo of a rock in the curb and then will write an essay about it.
It doesn’t take much
to amuse Ro. Ro writes in her journal and sits in her room every day
and makes lists of the things she is grateful for. Life feels like
an adventure to Ro.
So, now... who is that lady in the newsletter?
Me. It’s
just me.
- Ro
P.S. - My husband felt that since I was discussing before
and after photos of myself, I needed to show you a “before the
before” photo just in case you ever meet me before I grow up.
(It’s his idea of a funny joke.)

This is me in first grade.

Designer Do-Over: Cherise Oleson
My Original:

Original Layout by Cherise Oleson
When I was looking for a layout to do-over for this assignment,
I started looking at some of the first digital layouts that I did.
This was one of my very first layouts, just after I had discovered
digital scrapbooking. There are some things I like about the layout,
but there are several other things that I don’t think are quite
working. Since I had previously only paper scrapped, I was trying to
stay too true to the look of paper scrapping. Now that I have discovered
the magic of the tools and techniques in digital scrapbooking, I think
there are some things that could definitely be improved on this layout.
My Do-Over:

I
really like the larger photo of my son and I definitely wanted to keep
it in the new layout. But the smaller photo was lacking a bit. I found
a similar photo to this one, but with my son NOT looking at the camera.
I thought it fit the feeling I wanted to convey in the layout a bit
better... like I was capturing him playing, rather than interrupting
him playing.
Because the second photo was a little out of focus, I decided
to incorporate that fact into the layout, instead of pretending that
it wasn’t
blurry.

First, I wanted to create a background to complement the layout.
I choose a semi-solid textured paper template from ScrapSimple Paper
Templates: Mardi Gras. I sampled a muted blue from my son’s
shirt, then applied it on top of the paper template, using the "Color"
Blend Mode and 100% Opacity. Next, I enlarged the out of focus photo
of my son playing to fill the bulk of the page and layered it on top
of the background paper, using the "Multiply" Blend Mode
and 60% Opacity. To blend the edge of the enlarged photo into the background
paper, I selected the right edge of the photo with the Rectangular
Marquee Tool, feathered it at 200 pixels, and hit Delete. This
is the result.

Now I was ready to place the main photo. I wanted to use a
frame for the main photo to offset it and make it stand out just a
bit. I used Embellishment Biggie: Old Photo Frames to find the
right one. I used a piece of Mesh Frame from the Stylize Collection to
place behind my photo to make it pop.
After those were in place, I
still felt like the frame needed a little something extra and decided
to apply some stitching on it. I used ScrapSimple Tools - Actions:
Stitching And Holes 4101 - Straight Stitching to stitch the frame
down. I sampled the same muted blue from my son’s shirt to apply
a color overlay to the stitching, so that it would all coordinate.
Now
for the finishing touches... I wanted to add some brushwork around
the edges of the paper to give it a little depth and interest. I used
some brushes from the Afterglow Brush Set, because they are
swirly and create movement, without being too feminine. I placed a
tag for the title and text details and then added a brad and a clip
to hold it all together!
And here is the finished layout. I think it
accents the photos much better than the original and uses color sparingly
to complement the photos, rather than compete with them.

advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital
scrapbookers doing.
- Take the world's easiest shortcuts to
creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
- Make sure that you don't make the biggest
mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
- Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap
Girls ScrapSimple products.
- Dip your digital scrapbooking self into
some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there waiting
in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing
pen, and more.
- See how easy it is to install and manage
new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make
things that are creative and unique.
- Learn advanced tricks for using tools that
you already know and love.
- Watch me make some beautiful papers and
get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That
is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you
do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers.
It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers.
Very private stuff.)
- See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm
betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do
that with, too...)
- Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets.
(You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating
you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder
why you haven't been using it all along.)
- Find out why Custom Shapes are so important
to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
- Learn how to cut out a title from a background
or a photo.
- And even more...
Note: These are NOT beginning
tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop
before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software,
you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers,
where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills
that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook
Software Secrets Revealed series before you try
to use it. |

to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives,
it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents
on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date

important business and financial files, because the backup happens
