Name of designer: Jo Corne

Name of layout: Ooh La La

Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements CS3

Name of challenge: Scraplift a Member

Note: Commercial license versions of ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Bows Biggie are also available.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

I chose Mary’s (goofyemt96) gorgeous layout, Dakota2007, as I loved the use of white space, the two-color set up, not that I’ve kept to that myself, LOL and the sheer joy of the photo itself.

To get Kerry’s Brocante Frame to fit the size of my photo, first I rasterised the frame, then I used the Rectangular Marquee Tool to select the area of the frame that I wanted to shift in closer to make the frame narrower. I then used the Direct Selection Tool, placed it over my selection and, holding down the Shift key, moved the selected area of the frame towards the edge of the photo until it fit to size around the photo.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

I liked the texture of the Curled Edges Template and the color of the Scenic Route Paper, so I blended the two of them together using the "Burn" Blend Mode setting. Then with the Grunge Brush, I lightly erased small portions of the Curled Edges Template.

Other Ingredients:

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

This is a scraplift of Eressea86's layout, "The World Is Amazing".

Using the Soft Edged Frames in PSE5, I had the left side of the photo blend into the paper, then I used the "Hard Light" Blend Mode. A little erasing of some of the harder edges of the photo made it blend in nicely.

Name of designer: Stefanie Harris

Name of layout: The Longest Journey

Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0

Name of challenge: Circles

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

Sometimes, one element on your page will dictate how you lay out everything else. The great thing is, even when using templates, all you have to do is flip or rotate your layers to accommodate this need. For this layout, I used the “Longest Journey” brush (from Jan Hicks’ Life Quotes 2 Set) as my starting point. Given the positioning and constraints of the paper and layout templates I was using, I had to flip horizontally and even free transform the template layers to accommodate that element. The result is a consistent flow, which reinforces the circular theme going on.

A Designer's Life: Sarah Batdorf

A Thousand Random Thoughts

Childhood Glimpse. Thankfully, my memory cells are dying, and I can’t remember ever hearing a disappointed voice saying, “Why can’t you be more like your sister?” or whom ever the goodie-two-shoes happened to be. I wasn’t a notoriously bad kid, but I sometimes rebelled or did thoughtless things like poking the eyes out of the missionaries’ prayer cards. When I was nine, my brother and I were caught snickering over our misdeed. We had reworked a complete bulletin board into sightless missionaries. It’s actually disrespectful to take a thumbtack to the photographed pupils. Our mortified parents were momentarily speechless before we were rewarded with a deserving punishment, and a life lesson on respecting other peoples’ property. Mom and Dad get credit for showing me right from wrong without making me feel like I wanted to be someone else entirely.

First Impressions. When I first meet a group of people, I am reserved and watchful. In grade school, I was certainly muted, and probably labeled as shy. On my home turf, my brothers’ nickname for me was “Mouth.” Picture a scrawny, undersized miss, who favored survival on potato products, loudly supervising parents and siblings alike. I gleefully announce that girl still comes out to play once in a while.

I’m Okay. In high school, I didn’t smile a whole lot. I didn’t realize that I wasn’t smiling. To me I was just busy thinking my own thoughts, and having a relaxed face. Being a serious thinker, peers would cautiously approach me, and inquire if I was in a negative mood. Even these days I do sporadically get the concerned question, “Are you alright?” Wow, I never thought of myself as such a solemn creature. God rescued me from getting too serious when he hooked me up with my husband Bill. Bill puts that grin on my face, and makes me feel jubilant and giddy inside.

Brief History. I was born in Connecticut, but haven’t lived there much. Our family migrated every year while my parents were in training to be missionaries. I was six when it finally sank in, and I realized that Jesus loved me enough to die for my sins. After I turned nine we uprooted once again for the big move to Papua New Guinea. It was right after we arrived to that country that my brother and I vandalized our dorm information board. Being an MK (missionary kid) was a dominating part of my... but that is a story for another time. I lived in PNG until after I graduated high school. Then I moved back to the States, and attended Bible school. After Bible school, I came to Pennsylvania to be near my sister. I connected with Bill, and we were married in 1998.

Children. Now life is full with two beautiful children. At five, Molly is sassy, bossy, silly and brilliant. The first two are from me, and the brilliant is from her dad. At three, Markus is a thinker and a ham. I can see those wheels turning, and the things he spouts out could fill up a book of quotes.

Scrap Girls. I’m not one to excel at any thing. Somewhere inside there is a desire for a creative outlet that became realized when I explored digital scrapbooking, and learned the principles of designing a layout. Gradually that evolved into creating papers and embellishments. Scrap Girls seemed like an impossible dream, but I applied for the product design team. I was a bit crushed, but not entirely surprised when I didn’t hear back. A year went by, and I sent in another application. I’m still pinching myself that I’m here.

- Sarah

Favorite product I've designed:
Becoming Collection Biggie

The Becoming Collection Biggie is a favorite product of mine. It’s about changes that happen throughout life. Growing with the changes and becoming the person God is making me into. The colors in this collection I am drawn to, the green of the grass, and the blue of the sky.

ScrapSimple Club Concepts

The ScrapSimple club contains items that allow YOU to decide the colors and looks you will end up for your digital scrapbooking designs because the ScrapSimple products are completely customizable. You get all the products shown above, a $19.15 value, for $6.99 or less! And if you would like to create designs to share or sell, there's even a commercial club available! Plus, each month we will help you find new ways to use your club contents to the fullest with this article full of ideas, tips, and projects to get your creativity going!

February’s Scrap Girls ScrapSimple Club’s featured designers are Brandie Valenzuela and Shalae Tippetts. Their club is full of fun products that can help you get creative in amazing ways. Let’s look a little closer and see what ideas we can come up with for this club.

Layout ideas:

  • The ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Bent Up can be used for layouts about dressing up, especially layouts with those dresses from the sixties with JUST the strip of ruffles on the edges!
  • The "From The Kitchen of" seal is perfect for recipe cards or recipe-themed layouts.
  • ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Antiqued could be used for a Geography Bee layout.
  • You could also use the ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Antiqued for nature layouts or the "mess" of Christmas orBirthday (when the gift wrap is all over the floor).
  • ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Matchbooklet can be used with a layout of a matchbook collection (many people collect these from restaurants, travels, etc.).
  • The ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Bent Up could be great on pages about sewing.

Embellishment ideas:

  • Use Brandie's ScrapSimple Layer Your Own Brushes: Worn Seals to commemorate the date of a travel layout.
  • Use the circle brush (without the bar in the bar in the middle) from ScrapSimple Layer Your Own Brushes: Worn Seals to "circle" something you want to bring attention to in our layout.
  • ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Matchbooklet ideas:
    • secret messages
    • show a collection (smashed pennies from travels, stamps, etc.)
    • a progressive album through the years (now and then pictures, before or after pictures, or growing up as it progresses in the album).
    • a small "favors" coupon book
    • a photo strip

Card and Printable ideas:

  • "From the computer of" from the ScrapSimple Layer Your Own Brushes: Worn Seals is great to place on the back of digitally created cards.
  • Create a gift mix for cookies or other goodies and a gift tag and instructions with the "From the Kitchen of" seal. Tie onto the mix.

Tips and Techniques:

  • You can use the ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Antiqued on top of preexisting papers to grunge them up.
  • Use the Grungelle Brush Set to grunge up a clean piece of word art to match a more grungy layout.
  • And the brushes are great for giving a worn look to any premade embellishment, too!
  • Or, use them to add a bit of color to an already premade paper. Such as if you have a nice blue paper, you could use the brushes to easily add some red, white, or another color on top.

March Events

March Board Game: Posting Contest

Are you ready for a workout? It's important to warm up before exercising, so try this with me. Open your hands and stretch your fingers as wide as they'll stretch. Now make a very tight fist. Again.... Stretch! Make a fist! Stretch! Make a fist! There you go! You're now sufficiently warmed up for this month's message board game.

It's time to put those fingers to the test and get chatty. We want to see you post the most! The top 10 posters this month will each win a gift certificate to the boutique! (Top 1-3 will each get a $10 GC, 4-6 will each get a $5 GC and 7-10 will each get a $3 GC!) We've got a system to keep track of your posts. If you want to keep your own tally, note your post count before you start posting on Saturday March 1st. Contest ends on Monday March 31st at midnight ET!

Remember to repeat your stretching exercises as necessary throughout the month!

March Layout Contests:

Layout Contest: This month we want to see your layouts of people or things that are on the move! It could be a great action sports shot, someone running a marathon, or even a child running through the grass. It could even be your pet flying across your photo. So, give us your best action shot and the story behind it posted to the March gallery before midnight EST on March 31st and you could win $10 to the boutique!

Mid-February Layout Contest: Faith is a very powerful attribute. On the Scrap Girls Message Board, we have all witnessed the power of faith. For the Mid-February Layout Contest, we’d like to see your layouts about faith…your religion, a leap of faith, your faith in another person or object…whatever moves you. The contest will run from February 15th until March 15th at midnight, EST time. To be eligible to win a $10 gift card to the boutique, please post your layouts in the Mid-February Layout Contest section of the Gallery. Have fun and Good Luck!

MORE Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed! for Adobe Photoshop Elements versions 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0 & 6.0

It's time for you to stop playing catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital scrapbookers doing.

  • Take the world's easiest shortcuts to creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
  • Make sure that you don't make the biggest mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
  • Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap Girls ScrapSimple products.
  • Dip your digital scrapbooking self into some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there waiting in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing pen, and more.
  • See how easy it is to install and manage new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make things that are creative and unique.
  • Learn advanced tricks for using tools that you already know and love.
  • Watch me make some beautiful papers and get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
  • See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do that with, too...)
  • Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets. (You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all along.)
  • Find out why Custom Shapes are so important to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
  • Learn how to cut out a title from a background or a photo.
  • And even more...

Note: These are NOT beginning tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers, where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed series before you try to use it.

Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed for MS Word

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.

Hard drives do fail. Don't think they won't and that you will escape from it happening to you forever. Just get a plan for managing what will happen someday and save yourself a lot of pain, sweat, agony and tears.

You need several methods of backing up in case one of them fail. Acronis True Image 11.0 is Ro's personal choice for creating a complete back up (software, operating system, settings... you name it) of her hard drives. It is easy to use (no excess geek speak) which is why she is recommending it to you.
