Customer Muse: Go For It
Somewhere deep in the soul of my inner-most little girl, “it” is
there... hiding. Afraid to break the rules. Afraid to disappoint
another. Afraid to make a mistake. Afraid. But still, it is there.
It is alive. It wants to breathe in the fresh air. It wants to create
in wild abandon. It wants to be accepted... unconditionally.
I think the
first time that I realized that “it” even
existed, I was about five years old. I had a new animal coloring book
and a box of 24 crayons. (Oh, the smell of new crayons! Joy!) I colored,
what I believed to be, the most beautiful horse in the world. I had
colored neatly, as I was supposed to. I had colored carefully, so as
not to break the new crayons. I was proud of my efforts.
As every innocent
child loves to hear praise for their work, I boldly took my picture
to my mother and waited for the glorious accolades that I knew would
follow. They didn’t. The only response my gorgeous
creation warranted was one of near disgust.
“Why did you color
the horse GREEN? You know horses aren’t
supposed to be green.”
And, that was it. The bubble had burst.
The moment passed, never to be recaptured. And, “it” began
to crawl deep inside of the soul of that little girl and hide its shameful
head.
Years passed and it stayed safely tucked inside the little girl’s
heart. Waiting. Longing. Hoping.
A few weeks ago, I purchased a template
from the boutique. I struggled and strained, but came to understand
how to “properly” use
the preformatted layout. I made a few attempts at layouts, loving the
idea that it was ready for me... I just had to fill in the elements.
It would be perfect! No mistakes. No criticisms. No disappointing reviews
of my work. And “it” could remain silently hidden deep
down inside of me.
But, something rumbled. Stirred. Rolled. Turned.
I could feel it every time I opened my program to work on a layout.
It began to nudge. It began to pull. And, as I looked at my beautifully
created, perfectly designed layout, it rolled some more. And then,
a question began to float to the surface...
What if?
What if I only use one photo, instead of the three on the
template? What if I don’t make the titles stand out like they
do on the samples? What if I do something crazy like change the shape
and size of the template box?
The fear began to take hold again. “No,
you can’t,” it
says. “You HAVE to follow the rules. You HAVE to stay inside
the designated boundaries. You cannot change it... it’s
perfect as it is.”
It pushes harder. It pulls on the heart strings.
It struggles to reach the surface. It cries out, “NO, I DON’T!”
And
then, a miracle took place. Right in my living room, right in front
of my laptop. At nearly 38 years of age, I gave myself permission to
go outside of the box... to color outside of the lines... to
delete the extra picture box I didn’t want on the layout. And,
in that brief moment, it came alive again.
I want to create something
simply because I love it, without worries of critics. I want to create
something because I am inspired to do so, without worries that it won’t
be “right.” I can
only imagine what I might have created along the way if I had only
allowed myself to try something that might have seemed foolish to others.
I cannot go back... but, I can look ahead.
And, I give myself permission
to just go for it.

Wait a minute. You are giving me a birthday
gift after the many days of pleasure you've already given me?
I
wasn't even aware of "digi scrapping" until last
February when, out of necessity, I had to find a way to scrapbook
my family recipes while living in an RV. After reading a magazine,
I started researching all of the referenced sites. KABOOOM! I
found Scrap Girls and felt like I had found a big piece of
heaven.
Not only do you have the best digital kits, you
have the best newsletter, tons of freebies, excellent classes,
numerous tutorials and, absolutely, the most incredible staff
I've dealt with. Everyone is so helpful, kind, generous,
funny and, oh yeah, highly talented.
I haven't used many of
the kits because of the large amount of time I have spent organizing. I
ran into a huge problem when I started purchasing and downloading. I
didn't have a hard drive big enough and then there was the
cataloging process to easily use items with other kits. When
I hit 147 gigabytes I said I had to find a better way. Adobe
Bridge came into play and now I only have about 40 gigabytes
to deal with in a much easier manner.
So, this year will
be the year that I begin really using the classes and the tools
to complete this important family heirloom. I want to thank
you for helping. The only way I know how to do this is
to keep buying and encouraging others to use the site. I will
use the gift certificate, because I always have a wish list
going and it's so exciting to get something that you really
love. |

Yep, it is time for everyone’s favorite
game... Bingo!!!
I know you want to play, so here is how
you do it. Please pick 25 of the 80 words and phrases listed
in the thread on the message board and send them in an e-mail
to [email protected]. Please
make the subject of your email "BINGO Card" and include
your Scrap Girls forum user name (for example: BINGO CARD
wxchic or BINGO CARD AngRoCamp). Please PUT THE
SAME THING in your e-mail followed by your 25 words. I don’t
need your real name, just your screen name!
You have until Midnight EST on Sunday, February
3rd to sign up for the first round of Bingo! Any e-mails received
after that will be included in the next round of Bingo. I cannot
be held responsible for misdirected emails. You do not have
to register for each round of Bingo once you are playing. Your
card is good through all the rounds. (You will receive a response
from me that I have received your card. If you do not get that
response within 24 hours, let me know!)
On Monday, February 4th, the welcoming committee
will start calling words 5 at a time and keeping calling 5
words a day (weekends NOW included) until someone posts that
they have a Bingo. What is a Bingo? You have a Bingo when they
have called 15 of your 25 words. If the Bingo is valid (which
we will verify using the e-mails that you've sent us), we'll
clear the cards and start over.
