Your spirit will go "ahhhh" when you find how amazing
it is to be a digital scrapbooker. So go ahead... take a leap of
faith and try it. And now is the perfect time to get started because
you can get a great deal on your digital
scrapbooking supplies! But remember, the
sale ends on Midnight (MST), February 29th. Don't miss
it or it will fly away...

What's New in the Scrap
Girls Boutique?
My family is used to hearing sounds from my office. I'm
often on the phone, discussing company matters with my team, helping
customers, or just doing boring business things. What my family isn't
quite as used to hearing is the sound of pure, delighted laughter coming
from me when there's no phone attached to my ear. I was trying out
our new product line, Dynamic Brushes, and I just couldn't help myself.
These are the most freaky-crazy-amazing things I've ever seen. You
just can't believe it until you actually use them yourself.
They make
brushing on your layouts SO easy, you will wonder how you lived without
them before! Look...

It's
like magic! I did this without changing my brush settings. I just "drew" these
stitches with my mouse. The angles changed all by themselves and I
didn't have to do a thing! I can simply draw around the edges of an
embellishment to stitch it to my layout. Or, I can write in stitching
using my mouse or pen tablet. Or, I can doodle my own stitched
backgrounds. The possibilities are endless, and that's just with this
one set! Imagine what you can do with a collection of these amazing
tools!
You MUST
try these. You will just die! They will change the way you scrapbook
with brushes!

Life Muses by Ro: The Simple
Joy Project – Try Again

Everyone bends a few nails when they are whacking away at their
goals. It’s not the failure to succeed on each attempt that matters.
It’s the failure to try again.
My first few jobs didn’t go
very well. When I was fourteen, I was hired to clean motel rooms. Although
I quickly became known for my talent of cleaning bathrooms spotlessly
(thanks, Mom), I hated the work and I quit after two weeks. I never
received the pay for my work because I assumed that one didn’t
get paid if they quit a job. I didn’t tell my parents about it
for thirty years and by then, it was clearly too late to retrieve the
money I had earned.
My next venture into the job market was as a typist
for a music store. Since I am musical, I thought I would be successful
in my new career. However, I struggled with the typewriter I was
assigned to use and made mistakes. This made my supervisor unhappy.
Her unhappiness made me unhappy and once again, I quit. Because I still
had the opinion that one didn’t get paid for work if quitting
a job, I didn’t
receive money for my efforts at the music store. I didn’t ask
for it and they didn’t offer.
After I married, I was hired as
a typist once more. This time I stayed long enough to receive pay.
I discovered that I truly didn’t
like being a typist. The work was too boring for a mind that is inquisitive.
I found myself typing the same names on endless stacks of papers for
eight hours a day. After three months, I quit and looked for a better
opportunity.
I believed I had found it in banking. Tellers seemed sophisticated
to me. They dressed sharp and handled money. Surely, that was an important
job. Why wouldn’t it be?
I found myself filing checks and shredding
documents endlessly.
Fortunately, Gary and I decided to move to the
other end of the state and I had a reasonable excuse to quit.
Once we
had relocated, I decided to give banking another try. This time I became
a teller. Sophistication was on the way...
I was surprised to learn
that not only was I not considered sophisticated, the men in the building
(this was in another age) considered tellers as dim-witted women who
didn’t need adequate pay because they
were just working for “pin money.”
What?
I decided to teach music lessons on the side to supplement my
minimum wage job. I was disciplined by the president of the bank for
my extracurricular activities. I quit again.
My experiences with these
unsatisfying jobs taught me that the time had arrived to complete the
college degree that had been haunting my dreams. My parents had warned
my husband-to-be during the “May
I have her hand?” inquisition that I would never be happy without
my degree and they had been proven correct. I wasn’t happy. My
inquisitive mind demanded information.
Whack! Whack! Bend a few nails.
Pound a few more. Try. Find that nail didn’t work for you. It
was the wrong kind. Take a different kind out of the tool chest and
use it instead. Pound it in carefully. Try again... and again... Whack!
Bend the nail over. Straighten it up. Tap the nail back in...
Life is
a series of trials and errors. It isn’t important that
you error when trying something new. But, it is critical to your ultimate
level of joy that you simply keep trying.

PSP Tutorial: Using Photo Mask Templates in Paint Shop Pro
Note: Tutorial created using PSPXi and Windows Vista.
ScrapSimple Paper Templates are a staple of digital scrapbooking
and most can be used as masks. Masks are black and white or grayscale.
Black hides or covers all, white shows all and grayscale allows different
amounts to show depending on the darkness/lightness of the gray.
My layout
uses the ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Photo Masks – Downtown.
Photo masks tend to be smaller than 12X12, but will conform to your
12x12 layout. The great thing is that you can RESIZE a mask once
you have applied it!

First, I open my ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates:
Photo Masks – Downtown and Just the Basics Paper in
two separate windows.

To create the mask layer, activate the paper, Layers> New Mask Layer from Image,
and then chose the template from the dropdown menu and click "OK."

This
creates a new group, with the paper on the bottom and the mask on the
top. I am using a landscape orientated photo so I rotate the mask.
You can do this before or after you apply it.

To resize the mask, I
click on it in the Layers Palette and activate the Pick Tool (K).
I then grab the top left corner and drag it in. If you look at the
mask layer, there is now more black showing around the top and right
sides. To add the mask layer to my layout, I can do one of two things:
Activate the Group and Edit> Copy, Edit> Paste onto
my layout, which will paste my group, or I can merge the group and
move just the one layer. To add a drop shadow, it must be a single
raster layer. I save my layer group as a .pspimage in case I
need to make changes later. I then add the merged group to my layout.

I
apply a mask to my photo in the same way. Notice that I rotate the
template before applying it this time.
The best way to learn what each
option in the mask dialogue box will do is to play with different templates
and settings to see what happens. Enjoy a new way to use your Scrap
Girls templates!

Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed! for Adobe Photoshop Elements
versions 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 & 5.0
It's time for you to stop playing
catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more
advanced tricks that you see other people and professional
digital scrapbookers doing.
- Take the world's easiest shortcuts to
creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
- Make sure that you don't make the biggest
mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create
layouts.
- Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap
Girls ScrapSimple products.
- Dip your digital scrapbooking self into
some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there
waiting in your software for you to use such as paths,
masks, the drawing pen, and more.
- See how easy it is to install and manage
new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you
can make things that are creative and unique.
- Learn advanced tricks for using tools
that you already know and love.
- Watch me make some beautiful papers and
get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear...
That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind
to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside
of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside
of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
- See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm
betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used
to do that with, too...)
- Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets.
(You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets
frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this
trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all
along.)
- Find out why Custom Shapes are so important
to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
- Learn how to cut out a title from a background
or a photo.
- And even more...
Note: These are NOT beginning
tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used
Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself
in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have
to understand layers, where things are located, and all of
the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook
Software Secrets Revealed series before you try
to use it. |

Ro personally uses Carbonite to
back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives,
it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important
documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely
up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying
about losing important business and financial files, because
the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
