For this layout, I scraplifted Janine’s (J9Buckles)
layout "D & J
September 2007".
I really liked how her photo took center stage on her layout. I actually
decided to use two photos instead of just one, but I still tried to
keep the same general feel of her layout. I also used Arianda’s
new ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Paper Piercing. They
are so cool and easy to use. Once I put them onto my layout, I applied
the "Multiply" Blend Mode to make it look as though there are actually
holes pierced into the paper.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I scraplifted kimmybutton's "Thankful" for this layout.
I wanted to dress up the title I made from the Intertwined Word
Art Brush Set. To do this I needed to put the flower and leaves
on their own layers. I used my Magic Wand Tool, with Tolerance set
to "0" and Contiguous checked. I clicked on the first leaf and jumped
the selection to a new layer using the keyboard shortcut, Ctrl+J.
Then I did the same thing with the other leaf and the flower. Once
I had them on separate layers, I was able to drag the papers I selected
to color them with and created a clipping mask (Layer> Create
Clipping Mask) for each piece. Once I had the flower and leaves
colored, I went back to the word art layer and erased those elements.
I recolored the words by using a Color Overlay Style.

This is a scraplift of Canyon Momma's “The Land of Laurel”.
Journaling:
I have to admit that I am guilty of taking my surroundings for granted.
I go through my day not paying much attention to the beauty of even
the simplest of things, a butterfly fluttering on a flower, a soft
breeze caressing my cheek, a gentle rain and its sweet melody as it
falls to the earth. Occasionally, I have to step back and try to savor
the beauty, often it’s during winter when I long for those spring,
summer or fall days... and usually it’s through photos such as
these that I really appreciate the colors, the magic of nature. I need
to stop and appreciate more in the moment - while I love these photos,
I am guilty of letting life’s beauty pass me by all too quickly.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
This is a scraplift of mom_of_twins'
layout, "Forever Summer".
Because I was scraplifting a great page and the background paper
for this layout was so beautiful, special techniques weren’t
really necessary. I did use frames in a different way. I layered
five frames around the photo to add depth. I started with the
paper frame around the photo and merged that layer, then added brushes,
glitter and the wonderful Victorian frame from the collection. The
Brocadelicious Collection makes any layout look magical.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
The inspiration for this scraplifted layout was “Piazza
San Marco” by TallCool69.
The combination of elements, color and simple style really appealed
to me. (Forget about the fact that I’m a nerd when it comes
to cool architecture!)
Since the layout centered on a place, I figured
I’d do the same
with mine. I happened to have a few nice photos of the downtown area
of the town where I used to live, so that’s what I used. I knew
I’d be using a frame around my layout, which cut down the amount
of space I had to work with, so I altered the Lifted Photos Template from
three photos to two by “cutting” it with the Rectangular
Marquee Tool. Whenever you do something like this, be sure to adjust
your drop shadow as well. I “cut” the shadow slightly larger
so it would still peek out past the end of the frame, and then softened
it with a brush from Brandie Valenzuela’s Well Worn Brush Set.

A Designer's Life: Angie
Briggs
Yes, I’m lucky!
Recently, I was on the phone with a customer, when all of a sudden
my husband came home with the boys from school. Instantly, my house
went from the nice silence of the day to a complete madhouse. Backpacks
are dropped at the front door, coats thrown over the couch and all
I can hear is, “Mom! Mom!” Obviously, the customer on the
other end of the phone could hear the changes also. The next comment
was, “Oh, you get to work from home. How lucky you are!”
Lucky.
Yes, I am.
Especially considering how much my life has changed in the
last six years. After the boys were born, we made the decision to move
from California back to my hometown in Missouri. We knew that this
would be a major change, especially for my husband who was born and
raised in California. But, due to the cost of living in California
and the fact that we had no family around there and most of our friends
were moving out of the Bay area, we thought that this would be the
best thing.
Of course, there were huge adjustments the first couple
of years. We were living with my parents. I was staying home with the
boys because we could not find a job that paid enough to make it worth
me going back to work. My husband found a job in his field, but he
hated it. I started doing some babysitting for extra income. To help
keep myself sane while watching a whole house of kids, I started scrapbooking.
Within
the next year, my passion went from paper scrapbooking to digital scrapbooking.
My husband found another job in the same field that he didn’t
hate as much, but it still wasn’t his dream job.
I fell in love with digital scrapbooking. I loved creating layouts
and showing everyone what I’d done. To help supply my “needs,” I
applied for and was accepted on several different creative teams. How
perfect was this? I could create layouts, watch kids and have a great
time.
As the boys grew older, my husband and I realized that things
were going to have to change. By this time, we had been living with
my parents for almost five years. The boys had a year before they would
start kindergarten and he had just applied for and had two interviews
with a company doing what would be his dream job. But, for us to make
the next move and have a house of our own, we needed an additional
income. We came to the conclusion that when the boys started school
I would go back to work.
Soon after, my passion (or should I say obsession)
for digital scrapbooking went to the next level. I started playing
around by creating freebies and posting them at different sites here
and there, never thinking anything more than “fun” would
come from it. One day, I was contacted by someone that was opening
a digital store and was interested in seeing if I wanted to sell my
product there. Wow! What a shock! This was not something I was looking
for and to have them contact me, I was honored. But, I knew at that
time that if I did go into selling, there was only one store that I
would want to do it at... Scrap
Girls.
So, I discussed it with my husband and we decided that since
we had a year before the boys went to school, I could give designing
a try. If, at the end of the year it wasn’t working out, then
I would still have to find a job outside of the home so that we could
take that next step.
I contacted Rozanne at probably the worst possible
time (during the Christmas craziness) and got a “welcome to
the team” but
we’d have to wait until after the first of the year due to the
Christmas rush. Wait? I could wait forever. I couldn’t believe
that I had just got accepted designing for my dream site. The next
few months I designed and released product, living day-to-day on the
high of “I’m a member of my dream team.”
Shortly after,
Rozanne and I were talking one day and she asked me about helping her
with the customer service for Scrap Girls. What? You’ve got to
be kidding me! What a perfect opportunity. I know customer service
is a job that you either love or hate, but I had worked it for five
years in California and I loved it. Where else can you do the same
job day after day, but no two days are alike? So, I jumped at the chance.
Within
that year, right before the boys started kindergarten, our lives changed
so quickly that it was hard to keep up. Not only was I designing for
Scrap Girls, I was doing customer service for them and loving each
day. My husband finally, after a year of going back and forth with
this new company, got the job of his dreams that he is absolutely in
love with. And, best of all, we found and purchased our dream home.
So,
yes, I’m lucky! My daily commute is from one end of my house
to the other. I don’t have to go out when it’s cold, snowing
or raining. When the boys have days off, I don’t have to worry
about getting a sitter for them or calling in sick when they can’t
go to school. I can go to the store or run errands during the day when
it’s not so crowded and, most of all, I get to work from the comforts
of my home with a group of women that I admire and adore. Yes, I am lucky!

Angie

and looks you will end up for your digital scrapbooking designs because
the ScrapSimple products are completely customizable. You get all the
products shown above, a $19.15 value, for $6.99 or less! And if you
would like to create designs to share or sell, there's even a commercial
club available! Plus, each month we will help you find new ways
to use your club contents to the fullest with this article full of
ideas, tips, and projects to get your creativity going!
February’s Scrap
Girls ScrapSimple Club’s featured designers are Brandie
Valenzuela and Shalae Tippetts.
Their club is full of fun products that can help you get creative
in amazing ways. Let’s
look a little closer and see what ideas we can come up with for this
club.

Layout ideas:
- Use the mouse brush on a "This is my computer..." or "I
love digi scrapbooking!" layout.
- ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Antiqued would make a nice "life
plan" layout
("Where I'm Going") or retrospective ("Where I've
Been) - both in the literal and figurative sense.
- The ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Bent Up
can be used for art class layouts, especially papermaking classes.
- Layouts
concerning archaeology or antiques.
- Heritage or history layouts
- Ballet
- Create an investigative reporter's
little notepad for a layout with a "Caught
Red Handed" type theme showing evidence written on the pad of
paper.

Embellishment ideas:
- The ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Matchbooklet could be
used to make a map. This would work well for layouts about travel,
getting lost, life maps, new directions in life, or even geocaching!
- You can also use it to make a 'start-to-finish'
project with the stamp of approval at the end. Think of a home
remodeling project, a sewing project, etc.
- The "Always and Forever" seal is nice with a special
date, like an anniversary, or the names of a couple around the outside.
- Write love notes,
like the notes a wife might put in her husband's lunchbox or pocket
as he leaves for work, with the ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates:
Matchbooklet.
- Or, you could decorate the closed matchbooklet and just use it
as an embellishment.
- You can use the stitching from the ScrapSimple Embellishment
Templates: Bent Up by itself on a layout or to sew other things to your layouts.
- Use the circle (with the
bar in the middle) from the ScrapSimple Layer Your Own Brushes:
Worn Seals with a Layer Style as a ribbon slide or
as a "no" over
a picture (like no girls, or no swimming).
- Make a list of favorites and write them on a ScrapSimple
Embellishment Templates: Matchbooklet page.

Card and Printable ideas:
- Use ScrapSimple Layer Your Own Brushes: Worn Seals to "sign" your
printed cards.
- ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Antiqued would make a nice
background for a regional recipe card, along with the kitchen seal
from the ScrapSimple Layer Your Own Brushes: Worn Seals set.

Tips and Techniques:
- Use the Grungelle Brush Set as an eraser, sometimes
lowering the opacity, to make your journaling less "perfect" looking,
even if the layout isn't grungy.
- Use the Grungelle Brush Set to erase photo edges for
an artsy look.
- You can make a new photo look old by using a sepia tone filter
(like Mandy's ScrapSimple
Tools - Styles: Distressed Photo Sepia 1801 Mini or Melissa's ScrapSimple
Tools - Actions: Photo Basics 5001), then add distressing by using the Grungelle
Brush Set in
Burn Mode.
- You can also use the Grungelle Brush Set to erase around
your photo subject, giving a grungy silhouette look.

Mini Tutorial: Creating Charms using ScrapSimple Layer Your Own Brushes: Worn Seals
Mini Tutorial by Christy VanderWall created using Adobe Photoshop
CS3
To create a fun tag for this layout, I used the ScrapSimple Layer
Your Own Brushes: Worn Seals and a Grunged Metal Style. Here are some
simple instructions on how to create fun tags for your own layout!

- Create a new layer. Do all of the following steps on this
same layer.
- Select the Brush Tool and load the Worn Seals Brush
Set.
- Select the "Base1" Brush and stamp on your layer.
This may require four to five ‘stamps’ to get a non-transparent
circle.
- Select the "Base3" Brush, size it appropriately,
then stamp to make the ring on your tag.
- Select the Eraser Tool, and
with the ‘Forever’ brush
sized appropriately, stamp (erase) on the tag.
- Then select
the ‘Heart’ brush, size it appropriately,
and stamp (erase) on the tag.
- While holding the Ctrl key,
click on the thumbnail of your tag layer (the marching ants will
appear around your tag).
- Press Alt+Backspace. This will fill
your tag in with your foreground color, making sure the layers are
not at all transparent.
- If you don’t want a little grunge in
the center of your heart, use the Eraser Tool to remove any extra ‘stuff’ in
the center.
- Apply your style. For this tag, I used Grunged Metals
4101 – "Copper
2" and "Rust 2" combined.
And there you have it! A simple way to make
your own fun tag charms!

Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed! for Adobe Photoshop Elements
versions 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 & 5.0
It's time for you to stop playing
catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more
advanced tricks that you see other people and professional
digital scrapbookers doing.
- Take the world's easiest shortcuts to
creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
- Make sure that you don't make the biggest
mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create
layouts.
- Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap
Girls ScrapSimple products.
- Dip your digital scrapbooking self into
some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there
waiting in your software for you to use such as paths,
masks, the drawing pen, and more.
- See how easy it is to install and manage
new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you
can make things that are creative and unique.
- Learn advanced tricks for using tools
that you already know and love.
- Watch me make some beautiful papers and
get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear...
That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind
to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside
of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside
of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
- See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm
betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used
to do that with, too...)
- Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets.
(You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets
frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this
trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all
along.)
- Find out why Custom Shapes are so important
to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
- Learn how to cut out a title from a background
or a photo.
- And even more...
Note: These are NOT beginning
tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used
Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself
in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have
to understand layers, where things are located, and all of
the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook
Software Secrets Revealed series before you try
to use it. |

Ro personally uses Carbonite to
back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives,
it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important
documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely
up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying
about losing important business and financial files, because
the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
