Name of designer: Brenda Peters

Name of layout: Thank Heaven For Little Boys

Type of layout: Digital

Software used: PSPX

Name of challenge: Free Scrap

Note: Commercial license versions of ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Lifted Photos Biggie and Timeless Brush Set are also available.

Other Ingredients:

  • Font: Kartika
  • Font: Typewriter

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

To get my title to match the frame I used the Color Re-placer Tool.  First I opened the paper that matched the frame from the Retro All Boy Collection and then minimized it.  Next, from the Materials Palette I clicked on Foreground and Stroke Properties>Pattern>All from the category drop down list.  Next I selected the paper that I previously opened from the drop down list and clicked OK.  Then, once again from the Materials Palette, this time I clicked on the Background and Fill Properties>Color and then hover my eye dropper/mouse over the title and click on it to select the color black.  Lastly I just color over top of the title that I want to color in using my brush with tolerance set high.  Piece of cake! ;)

Name of challenge: free scrap

Note: Commercial license versions of ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Sew Torn Up are also available.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

I laid out a black paper, and then put a torn page template below the black paper. Then I clipped the black paper to the torn template, making it as a mask. Then I changed the overlay setting to soft-light to highlight the edges of the torn template while showing the color and texture of the black paper itself. I put a photo underneath the torn template layer, adjusting its position and size. Then I layered some flowers on the edges of the bottom part of the layout, leaving a space to write journaling. Then I placed the wordart “Celebrate” on top right of the document and wrote the journaling by creating a text box area using the Pen Tool.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

Sometimes, I just like to do a layout with no real title or journaling, allowing the picture to truly stand out. I wanted to use soft, muted tones and natural textures for this layout.

In order to accent the charm/frame embellishment from Brandy’s Spiced Cider Collection, I decided to inlay some Mica into the opening before adding the date. In order to do this, I opened the SSEmb Templates: Mica Tiles, choosing the one I thought had the most texture in the smallest space. I added a layer and filled it with a brownish color I had pulled from the flower embellishment. The next step was to select the shape (CTRL-click the layer icon), CTRL-Shift-I to invert the selection, and delete the area I didn’t want showing. (This step wasn’t really necessary, but it’s force of habit.) Next, you want to play with the Blending Modes to get the look and color you want ... I used Color Burn. I merged the layers next and dragged it over the charm/frame on my layout, clicking the “eye” next to the layer icon to make it invisible for the moment. I then used the Elliptical Marquee Tool to select the inner portion of the frame, CTRL-Shift-I to invert the selection, then reactivated the Mica layer to delete the area I didn’t want. To give it a little more dimension, I added an Inner Shadow to it and knocked down the size/distance to make it look more realistic. Finally, I added the date using the Alpha/Numbers from Brandy’s Persian Breeze Collection Biggie (I used Cheryl Barber’s Grunged Metals 4103 Super Biggie to alter the color). In order to get the ‘apostrophe’ for the date, I just cut out the dot from the letter ‘j’ from the same alphabet.

Name of layout: Guilty until proven innocent

Software used: PSCS3

Name of challenge: free scrap

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

To make the light of Brandy Hackmans’ Not Guilty_BrickAlley paper look as if it is shining further down onto the photos, I placed the flashlight element with only the ‘light beam’ over the layout. I then enlarged the element so that the ‘beam’ shone further down, erased part of the ‘beam’ that lay over the lampshade itself and reduced the ‘beams’ opacity to 80%.

Name of layout: Christmas Cruise

Software used: PSCS2

Name of challenge: free scrap

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

We had a postcard with the photo of our cruise ship on it that I wanted to use to set the cruise theme of this layout.  I scanned the card and in PS I used the lasso tool and selected a rough outline of the ship, then chose select>feather>40 pixels and dragged the photo onto my layout. This created the soft blend into the background.  I then chose layer>layer style>blending options>80%. This made the photo blend into the background more but it still took the focus away from the photo of my son, so I chose blending modes>luminosity.  This made the ship a monotone and blended it into the background paper.  I think using the postcard in this way added much more to the composition of my page than the original postcard would have.

Name of layout: That Smile

Software used: PSE5

Name of challenge: free scrap

Note: Commercial license versions of ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Photo Transfer Frames and Story Time Brush Set are also available.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

I took Trish’s Storytime brush set and chose one of the brushes to put a little bit of a frame around my photo.  I created a new layer and then stamped my brush onto my new layer.  I created another layer, rotated my brush 90 degrees and stamped my brush on my 2nd layer.  I positioned my brushes where I wanted them, framing the upper left hand corner of my photo.  I then played with the blending modes until I got an effect that I liked.

Business Corner by Ro: You Have to Try Something

Note: Prior editions of this series (which is currently focusing on business plans) can be found on my blog.

Business Types

One of the most important decisions you will make when considering starting a business is what type of business entity to use. I’m going to just hit some of the highlights of the various types to get you started. Please consult an adviser for your particular state’s requirements (as they can vary) or do some additional research for more information. I am not going to cover corporations, as most small businesses will choose one of the following entity types. (And note: This brief synopsis is not meant to advise you about what particular format anyone should choose. It is also not meant to be the ultimate listing of the particulars of these business types. This is just enough information to get you started.)

Limited Liability Partnership:

  • There is limited personal liability (thus the name) for owners. Partners are not liable for problems, negligence, malpractice or other misbehavior, unless they were directly involved or supervised the misbehavior. In most states, LLP partners are liable for contractual obligations.
  • Federal Income Tax Treatment: Each member of the partnership has to pay their own taxes in the same manner that they would as if they weren’t involved in a company at all. Partners are liable for their share of the taxes owed on company profits. It is important to understand that you will be liable for profits – not money actually paid to you by the company. For example, I recently heard about an unfortunate real estate business owner who is liable for $250,000 in profits, even though she has never had access to any of the money. The assets have to remain with the company so that the company can continue to purchase new real estate. But, as an owner of the company, the federal government still considers this income profits and so she has to pay taxes on it.
  • How many owners are allowed? No limits – but you have to have at least two to be considered a partnership LLC.
  • How long can the entity be active? Limited. It has to be renewed annually.
  • Who can manage the company? Owners manage it.
  • Can the shares be transferred to someone else? If the *operating agreement allows it. If the operating agreement disallows it, then no. Otherwise, transfers are limited by state law.
  • Articles of organization and documentation required? There is usually some kind of partnership agreement (such as an operating agreement) in place. An annual registration is required.

Limited Liability Company:

  • There is limited personal liability (thus the name) for owners. The exception would be for individual professional errors.
  • Federal Income Tax Treatment: Each member of the partnership has to pay their own taxes but partners are liable for their share of company profits.
  • How many owners are allowed? No limits – but you have to have at least two to be considered a partnership LLC.
  • How long can the entity be active? Forever, unless the company is discontinued.
  • Who can manage the company? The owners can manage it or they can hire someone to manage it.
  • Can the shares be transferred to someone else? If the *operating agreement allows it. If the operating agreement disallows it, then no. Otherwise, limited by state law.
  • Articles of organization and documentation required? This type requires Articles of Organization, regulations, and annual meetings in which you keep minutes.
  • Regulation of Issue and Sale of Interests? The federal and state governments both have laws that affect this type of business. You need to consult an attorney or a business accountant.

Limited Liability Company – “S” Corporation:

  • There is limited personal liability (thus the name) for owners. The exception would be for individual professional errors.

  • Federal Income Tax Treatment: Each member of the partnership has to pay their own taxes in the same manner that they would as if they weren’t involved in a company at all. The difference is that partners are liable for their share of the taxes owed on company profits. However, the company can pay salary to partners, which can reduce tax liability by reducing self-employment tax.

  • How many owners are allowed? Only 75 owners allowed.

  • Who can own it? Individuals, estates, certain types of trusts

  • How long can the entity be active? Forever

  • Who can manage the company? Board of directors and officers

  • Can the shares be transferred to someone else? Determined by shareholder agreement. Transfers have to comply with state “S” tax requirements.

  • Articles of organization and documentation required? This type requires Articles of Organization, bylaws, and annual meetings in which you keep minutes.

  • Regulation of Issue and Sale of Interests? The federal and state governments both have laws that affect this type of business. You need to consult an attorney or a business accountant.

General Partnership:

  • Liability. The partners are liable for everything and anything that can happen.
  • Federal Income Tax Treatment: Each member of the partnership has to pay their own taxes in the same manner that they would as if they weren’t involved in a company at all. The difference is that partners are liable for their share of the taxes owed on company profits.
  • How many owners are allowed? Unlimited
  • How long can the entity be active? Limited. Has to be renewed annually.
  • Who can manage the company? Owners manage it.
  • Can the shares be transferred to someone else? If the *operating agreement allows it. If the operating agreement disallows it, then no. Otherwise, limited by state law.
  • Who regulates? States

Sole Proprietorship:

  • Liability. The owner is liable for everything and anything that happens.
  • Federal Income Tax Treatment: The owner has to pay their own taxes on all of the profits, regardless of how much they pay themselves.
  • How many owners are allowed? One
  • How long can the entity be active? Limited. Has to be renewed annually.
  • Who can manage the company? Owner
  • Can the shares be transferred to someone else? Not applicable.

What is an operating agreement? It is a document in which you outline the terms of the partnership. Items to include should include: shares, duties, transferability of shares, what happens if a partner dies, what happens if a partner stops performing or resigns, etc. At a minimum, this should be written down and notarized. It is better to have a lawyer prepare a document which the members (partners) sign.

P.S. I think I’m going to give you a Quote of the Day from my blog on these business days. That way, there will be something for everyone in this section!

Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.
- T.S. Elliot

I guess as long as God is driving with us, we'll end up okay... I know that I can't get anywhere at all without Him. It's a fact that I sometimes struggle with (meaning, I struggle with myself - not with Him). But, when I am taking time to include Him with me, the risk suddenly doesn't seem quite as risky. But, you have to try... You HAVE to try something or your life will end up as nothing but watching American Idol with a big bowl of ice cream on a beat up sofa.

Way Cool Stuff Product Review: Transparencies

There are so many ways to use Transparencies in your digital scrapbooking, and we have such a variety of them in the Boutique. I’d like to share with you some ideas about how to use them.

Some Transparencies are perfect for adding interest and depth to your background papers. I’m going to start with an already beautiful turquoise paper from Angie Briggs’ Sweet Words Collection Biggie, and I layered one of Amanda Sok’s ScrapSimple Transparency Overlays: Vintage Valentine on top of it. I selected the black pixels in the transparency and filled them with a dark green.

Not too impressive yet, but watch what happens when I change the blending mode on the transparency to “Screen.”

Pretty cool, huh? I absolutely love to use blending modes. I know the ScrapGirls University offers a class about blending modes, and I would encourage you to take it. It will open a whole new world to you. Now, I’m liking this background so far, but I wanted to grunge it up a bit, so I added one of Erica Hite’s ScrapSimple Transparency Overlays: Scratched and changed its color from black to white by selecting Image > Adjustments > Invert from the Photoshop menu bar.

For the final touch on the background paper I added Syndee Nuckle’s Collage Art Transparency and set the blending mode to Overlay.

Now that I have the background paper finished, I will go on to add my picture, a frame from Angie’s Sweet Words Collection Biggie and some embellishments from Syndee Nuckles’ Collage Art Collection Biggie.

I like this, but I want to add one more something to anchor the photo on the left side. I chose Thao Cosgrove’s beautiful Pen and Ink Transparency and drug it onto my layout and positioned it underneath the photo frame on the left side.  I also sized it down a bit. Since I had used one of Amanda Sok’s ScrapSimple Micro Glitter Styles on the initial “M” embellishment I decided to repeat the use of the style in a peachy color on the Pen and Ink Transparency.

And, here is my finished layout:

Note from Ro: Scrap Girls is now giving away birthday gifts to our message board members! Of course, it is a surprise what you will get because birthday presents are always surprises! But you will like it for sure because most people like money... Oops! Did I say that? No. I didn't say that. You did NOT hear me say that.

Anyway, make sure your message board email address is current and that you have the correct date entered into your profile or you'll miss out on the birthday present! (You will only be entering the month and the date so don't be shy. We won't know how old you actually are!)

*NEW!* MORE Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed! for Adobe Photoshop (Versions 6, 7, CS, CS2, CS3)

MORE Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed! for Adobe Photoshop Elements versions 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 & 5.0

It's time for you to stop playing catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital scrapbookers doing.

  • Take the world's easiest shortcuts to creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
  • Make sure that you don't make the biggest mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
  • Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap Girls ScrapSimple products.
  • Dip your digital scrapbooking self into some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there waiting in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing pen, and more.
  • See how easy it is to install and manage new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make things that are creative and unique.
  • Learn advanced tricks for using tools that you already know and love.
  • Watch me make some beautiful papers and get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
  • See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do that with, too...)
  • Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets. (You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all along.)
  • Find out why Custom Shapes are so important to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
  • Learn how to cut out a title from a background or a photo.
  • And even more...

Note: These are NOT beginning tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers, where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed series before you try to use it.

Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed for MS Word

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
