Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

Okay... so there’s a lot going on here, and much of the “fancy” stuff was achieved through trial and error with the Blend Modes. The one thing I was particularly happy about was the Measuring Tape Embellishment (from the Again Collection Biggie) I placed along the right side of the layout. It started out black with white markings, but after I placed it in a layer over the paper from the Painted Moon Paper Mini (which I had already altered by layering the ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Ravishing over it and applying the "Luminosity" Blend Mode), and applied the "Difference" Blend Mode. What I ended up with was a clear measuring tape with what looks like metallic or paua shell markings. VERY cool!

Note: Commercial license versions of ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Artsy - Watercolor 1 and Snowflakes Brush Set Biggie are also available.

Other Ingredients:

  • Font - Porcelain
  • Font - Papyrus

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

I started with a snowy landscape photo and applied Shalae Tippetts' Artsy Watercolor Template – Salt, setting the Blend Mode to "Color Burn." I then loaded the snowflake brushes and selected various colors from the watercolor landscape that I thought would make good snowflake colors. By setting the Brush Opacity from 30% to 50%, the result is a very delicate looking snowflake. Vary the size and the placement of the flakes as you go. I find it helpful to create a new layer for each flake so they may be scaled, rotated or deleted as your layout progresses. Have fun making your own snow storm!

Journaling:

Times have not always been easy for me and it is during these times when I especially have my faith tested. I won’t say that it is only during these times that I turn to God. Because it isn’t. I thank Him and praise Him every day. But, it’s during the hard times, when I must remember, that I am in His hands, that He will take care of me, that He knows best.

If you have praise, comments, or questions for any of our Product or Layout Designers, did you know you can send them a PM (private message) using the message board? It's easy!

If you are a registered user of the message board, just click on the "PM" box at the bottom of any of their posts to send them a message. Or, to check out more of your favorite designer's layouts, visit the Scrap Girls Design Team section of the Layout Gallery.

A Designer's Life: Marnie Adams

Fairy Tale – A True Story

In this fairy tale, our intrepid heroine, Marnie, takes a journey across an ocean to visit with some of the amazing inhabitants of a magical kingdom.

In this magical kingdom, there is always peace. The people are always friendly and happy and supportive and kind. There are colors and textures and pretties galore. New and creative thoughts are encouraged and celebrated. There are many artists in residence, both professional and hobbyists, who share the love of each other’s work in equal measure. And, all the members of this near-perfect society meet and communicate without ever seeing one another’s face – a true virtual world.

At the end of Marnie’s travels, she arrives at a gorgeous house deep in the woods, as in every good fairy tale. She is greeted by the queen of this castle and welcomed by all who are in attendance – nearly twenty strong. Marnie is in awe of meeting each of these incredible people. Everyone has talent oozing out of their fingertips and joy radiating from their faces.

There are the illustrators and designers and creators of beautiful things. There are the supporters and enablers who are the true magic behind the kingdom. There are the communicators and organizers that bring the games and activities to everyone. There is the master artist, with years of knowledge and creativity beyond compare. There is the storyteller and fearless leader (one and the same) who had the vision and fortitude to bring the magical kingdom to life.

During the four days at this beautiful castle, there are walks in the forest with cameras in hand, computers lined up on every available surface, video to enable those absent to join the festivities, and endless hours of conversation, idea sharing and laughter – buckets and loads of laughter.

On one special day, the storyteller leader gathers everyone in a circle. She shares her tale of joy and wonderment that the magical kingdom continues to grow and evolve in new and beautiful directions. She shares the knowledge of their blessing, of being in a bonded group of like-minded folks. And, she offers each of the attendees a gift: a bracelet forged with magical phrases like “expect miracles.”

Marnie is surprised to find the powerful word “imagine” on her shiny new jewelry, for she has been told for years and years, by teachers, family and friends alike, that she has unlimited imagination. Marnie has already received the amazing opportunity to write for pleasure and profit. The only other thing Marnie can “imagine” to bring about her absolute dream come true, is to be able to draw for a living as well. Imagine. Imagine. Imagine. A mighty word indeed.

And, to Marnie’s shock and amazement, the very next morning, the master artist invited Marnie to use her illustrations for creating pretty products. Imagine! After Marnie swallowed her tongue, she bowed down and kissed the master artist’s feet. (Oh, wait, maybe she just thanked her profusely.)

At the end of the four days, the group dispersed across the land and Marnie returned to her island in the sea.

Today, Marnie spends her days and evenings in her cheerful, little life. She visits the magical kingdom often. She writes and draws and plays and creates just like she dreamed she might do one day. Imagine.

And, she continues to live happily ever after.

- Marnie

Scrap Girls Club Concepts

The Scrap Girls Monthly Club allows you to get all of the newest looks while saving money! It is perfect for anyone who wants beautiful, coordinated digital scrapbooking supplies that are easy to use. You get all the products shown above, a $29.33 value, for $9.99 or less! Plus, each month we will help you find new ways to use your club contents to the fullest with this article full of ideas, tips, and projects to get your creativity going!

February’s Scrap Girls Club’s featured designer is Syndee Nuckles. Her club is full of rich, provincial colored and textured products that can help you get creative in amazing ways. Let’s look a little closer and see what ideas we can come up with for this club.

Layout ideas:

  • The color palette is good for 1930s-40s black and whites
  • Use the embroidered flowers for floral garden photos
  • Travel
  • Fall
  • Victorian Christmas
  • Picnics
  • Romantic outings
  • Layouts related to eating
  • My first garden
  • Use the green and yellow papers for springtime layouts
  • Layouts about "Dressing Up in Mommy's Pearls" with the pearl embellishments
  • You can use the Notable Word Art, and specifically the Who, What, When to make a cool western layout. Perhaps even a "Wanted: Dead or Alive" type layout.
  • The alpha with the little notebook papers would make a great school-themed layout, especially college.
  • The bush from the Embellishment Mini would work well for things like Renaissance fairs.
  • The word art "Art is the only way...." can be used for layouts of kids doing art projects
  • Make a "Happiness is..." album that shows favorite things your family likes to do together.

Layout by Amy Lemaniak

Embellishment ideas:

  • Use the scalloped papers as photo mattes, page borders or journaling boxes.
  • You can also use the scalloped papers as a background for a recipe page. They look an awful lot like table cloths.
  • The stapled ribbons in the embellishments can be repeated around the edge of a photo to create a unique photo frame. This would look really nice on a vintage-themed layout!
  • Use the bracket paper from the Paper Mini to make a title or cover page for your album.

Layout by Carla Shute

Printable project ideas:

  • Use the kit to decorate a clock face.
  • Create Christmas decorations: ornaments, chains for the Christmas tree, placemats, gift wrap, gift bags, etc.
  • Garden signs
  • Create napkin rings out of background paper strips and adhere a flower where the ends of the paper are joined.
  • Altered wall plaque
  • Pen/pencil holders
  • Make a name placard for a girl's bedroom door

Project by Christy VanderWall
larger view

  • Decoupage papers onto a frame for a shadow box
  • Create a centerpiece made of paper posies. Use circles centered with the flowers and buttons tied with string.
  • Use Mod Podge on a wooden container to create a gardening tote for someone.
  • Print out these papers and cover file folders to have a color-coordinated, sophisticated office!
  • This kit is versatile enough to work year round, so it would be great for a calendar or yearly planner.

Project by Angela Nussbaum

Note: Commercial license versions of ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates - Calendar: Clipboard Perpetual and Occasions Brush Set Biggie are also available.

Card ideas:

  • Thank You Cards - Print the flowers, cut them out, attach them with wire for stems and add "Thanks a bunch!"
  • Garden themed party invitations can use the "Who", "Where" and "When" word art.
  • Ladies' luncheon invitations
  • Use the curled edge paper to make a treasure map for invitations to a treasure or scavenger hunt.
  • Wine tasting party invitations

February Board Game: Bingo

Yep, it is time for everyone’s favorite game... Bingo!!!

I know you want to play, so here is how you do it. Please pick 25 of the 80 words and phrases listed in the thread on the message board and send them in an e-mail to [email protected]. Please make the subject of your email "BINGO Card" and include your Scrap Girls forum user name (for example: BINGO CARD wxchic or BINGO CARD AngRoCamp). Please PUT THE SAME THING in your e-mail followed by your 25 words. I don’t need your real name, just your screen name!

You have until Midnight EST on Sunday, February 3rd to sign up for the first round of Bingo! Any e-mails received after that will be included in the next round of Bingo. I cannot be held responsible for misdirected emails. You do not have to register for each round of Bingo once you are playing. Your card is good through all the rounds. (You will receive a response from me that I have received your card. If you do not get that response within 24 hours, let me know!)

On Monday, February 4th, the welcoming committee will start calling words 5 at a time and keeping calling 5 words a day (weekends NOW included) until someone posts that they have a Bingo. What is a Bingo? You have a Bingo when they have called 15 of your 25 words. If the Bingo is valid (which we will verify using the e-mails that you've sent us), we'll clear the cards and start over.

Want to know what you're playing for? Each winner will receive a $5.00 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique! Have fun! Remember you may only win ONCE. We want everyone to have the chance to be a winner!

  • Watch me make some beautiful papers and get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
  • See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do that with, too...)
  • Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets. (You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all along.)
  • Find out why Custom Shapes are so important to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
  • Learn how to cut out a title from a background or a photo.
  • And even more...

Note: These are NOT beginning tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers, where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed series before you try to use it.

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
