Life Muses by Ro: The Simple Joy Project – All You Need is Love

All you need is love
I can’t help it. When I see this statue, the Beatles song, “All You Need is Love” (dah, dah, dah, dah, dah) blasts through my head. Can you hear it, too?
Technically, we need more than love, but it ranks pretty high. According to Maslov’s hierarchy of needs, after our psychological (what it takes to stay alive) and safety needs are met, we need love. We need to receive it and to give it.
Back in the days when I was still writing music, my dad informed me (after intently listening to a stream of my newest songs) that I needed to write more music about love.
“Rosie,” he said, “all of the best, popular music is about love. You need to write some of that.”
I hadn’t ever thought about it until that moment, but (as usual) my dad was correct. How many “My car needs new struts” or “I’m cleaning my living room tomorrow” or “Maybe I’ll have a haircut today” or even “My dog is cute and you should know it” songs have you heard? Popular music generally has love as the undercurrent through almost every line. Either the author has found it, lost it, wants it, hates it, is getting over it, or is crazy wild about the love they have right now.
It has also been said that people have two great desires: to feel love and acceptance. Dr. Phil says that if you understand this, you’ll understand what most people do most of the time.
“Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.” (Matthew 22: 37-40)
Interesting. The greatest commandments are that we love.
Maybe the song was right after all, “All we need is love…”

Tutorial: Sharpen by Using Unsharp Mask
Note: Tutorial created using Photoshop 7 with Windows XP.
Unsharp Mask (also called USM) is a filter in Photoshop that is used
to sharpen images. Although it is not technically sharpening the image,
it is creating the illusion of sharpening. USM works by putting a greater
contrast between the light and dark pixels and also by putting an edge
on the objects in the image. Trying to sharpen a blurry photograph is
impossible, but it's possible to sharpen photos that are soft or fuzzy
so that they become clear and distinct.
Let's get started. Find a photograph
that you want to sharpen and open it. For any photo editing process,
the first step is to resize the photo and the last step is to use the
Unsharp Mask filter. If you haven't already, resize the photo so that
it's ready to go onto your digital scrapbooking layout.
My favorite way to resize is to crop the photograph. Choose the Crop tool from the toolbar. In the Options Window, type in the width and height and resolution (300) that you want to crop the photo. To view the options window, go to Window>Options. For example: 4 inches wide, 6 inches high and 300 resolution.

On the photo, drag out the crop lines, right-click and choose Crop. Duplicate the photo layer (go to Layer>Duplicate Layer) so that we have the untouched original to go back to if we want to make changes later. Now, let's use Unsharp Mask to sharpen the picture.
To find the Unsharp Mask in Photoshop, go to Filter>Sharpen>Unsharp Mask. The Unsharp Mask dialog box will appear.

Check the Preview button to watch the photo change as we apply the effects of the filter. See the words Amount, Radius and Threshold? We will adjust the sliders and they will bring out object edge pixels in the image. Object edge pixels are the outlines of a strand of hair, etc.
Amount percentage controls the contrast in pixels to bring out those edge pixels. The light pixel will become lighter and dark edge pixels will become darker the higher the amount percentage is set.
Radius controls how wide the edge pixels are. The higher we set the number of the pixels, the wider the edge will be.
Threshold levels control and maintain the texture of the image. The lower the Threshold levels, the sharper the image will be.
Over sharpened photos look terrible. An over sharpened photo will have wide edge pixels and/or too much contrast between the light and dark pixels. It's easy to fix by reducing the Amount % and the Radius or by increasing the Threshold levels. Fix it before clicking OK or there is the original that we can duplicate and start Unsharp Mask over again.
An example of an over sharpened photo:

As we are working in the Unsharp Mask dialog box, we can view the original photo by checking and unchecking the Preview button. Another way to view the original is to click and hold on the preview image in the dialog box.

A good guide to set the Amount is between 50 – 200.
A good guide to set the Radius is between 0.5 - 6.0.
A good guide to set the Threshold is between 0 – 6.
What the setting will be depends on the image, so play around with it. If the Amount % is high (85% - 200%) then the Radius should be low (.5 – 3). If the Amount % is low (50% - 85%) then set the Radius high (3 – 6). The changes can be subtle and amazing.
A good place to start is Amount: 85% - 100%, Radius: 1 – 3, Threshold 0. Click OK when done using the filter.
A before (left) and after (right) using Unsharp Mask Filter. Amount 100, Radius 3, Threshold 0.

If you enjoy adding filters to your photographs, check out the photo actions in the boutique. Commercial Licenses are available.

Ro personally uses Carbonite to
back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives,
it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important
documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely
up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying
about losing important business and financial files, because
the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
