Life Muses by Ro: The Simple
Joy Project - Give Me a Little Heart
I love JuJu hearts. They are sweet and snappy and chewy all at the
same time. They only appear once a year and I look forward to the event.
But, they have to be the correct brand or that sweet/sour balance isn’t
quite right.
My husband knows exactly which kind I like and when he spots
them, he brings them home with just as much bravado as a frontier hunter
brought home the sustenance he had provided for his loved ones. On
this auspicious occasion, Gary appears in my office door with a big
grin and presents me with his conquest, “I thought you might
like these, dear.”
“Thanks,” I blush.
I’m not sure why I blush each
time, but I do. Perhaps, it is because I know it is likely he has gone
out of his way to locate them for me.
Our daughter’s name is Julianne
and over time, we nicknamed her JuJu. I’m not sure if she realizes
that her pet name is traced back to Gary’s annual presentation
of little red hearts to his sweetie. JuJu = Sweet and snappy and chewy
all at the same time. It’s
a perfect nickname for our only daughter who is sweet and snappy and
sometimes, a little chewy.
So, give me a little heart, will ya? I’m
waiting.

Tutorial: How to Use Textures
Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop
CS3 with Windows XP.
Textures are great products that give your background papers and elements
amazing dimension. They let you quickly create your own unique digital
scrapbooking designs. You can use textures on a solid background or
combine them with patterns, brushes and paper templates to get a realistic
looking paper. You can create your own embellishments using shapes,
brushes and more. You can also give your photos that extra touch and
add more interest to your titles and word art. Textures are very useful
and versatile. Here's how to use them in Photoshop and Photoshop Elements.
(Note:
Applying the Texturizer Filter in these programs will NOT allow further
editing of the texture. Photoshop CS3 has an extra feature called “Smart
Filters” which allows editing of applied
filters. I will discuss this later.)
Open a new document and drag the
file you want to work with onto it. (Remember – NEVER work on
originals!) In my case, it is a photograph.
Go to Filter> Texture> Texturizer.
You'll get this dialog box. You have to load the texture you want to
use. I am using Paper Textures Set for this tutorial. Click
on the small triangle and then click on “Load
Texture.” You'll get another dialog box. Choose your texture
and click “Open.” The program will show you the preview
of your applied texture. (I applied "Canvas Texture.")
Now, adjust
the settings to your liking. Start from scaling at 100%. (Scaling determines
the size of the design.) Next, choose Relief, which will adjust the
amount of the embossed look. If you're looking for a softer look, you'll
want a lower Relief. I chose 7 here, as higher amounts were making
my photo less clear. Remember to set Light – if you usually work
with Global Light set at 60° (it's the default setting) you'll
want Top Left. Keep that in mind while applying this filter to other
elements in your layout.
Here's the effect I get at 100% view.
Next, open a new file (I work
with 12x12 at 300 dpi) and fill it with a color that matches your photos.
I fill mine with a cream color that I have selected from the photograph.
I want the layout to be as warm as the picture. I then sample a warm,
reddish color from the man's shirt and apply it to the ScrapSimple
Paper Templates: Gingham. This is the masculine element in my layout.
I want the plaid design to show only a little bit, so I mask it out
using the Homemade Grunge Brush Set. To give my background more
interest and some feminine element, I use the ScrapSimple Paper
Templates: Enchanted.
I color it with the same reddish color. I am now ready to apply the
Cardstock Texture. This time, my settings are Scaling: 100%,
Relief: 10, Light: Top
Left.
Here's the finished background paper.
Next, I drag my texturized photo
onto the paper and add embellishments. I type the word “happy” and
then apply the Cardstock Paper Texture. I create the photo matte
in the same way. I apply the drop shadows and am ready to go!
FOR PHOTOSHOP
CS3 USERS ONLY:
Photoshop CS3 has a new feature called “Smart
Filters.” The
filter effects stay “alive” and are easy to adjust or
remove even after applying the filter. You can also easily mask them
and change Blend Modes. Simply select the layer that you want to
apply the filter to and go to the Filter menu. Click “Convert
to Smart Filters” and you'll get a warning that Photoshop converts
this layer to the Smart Object. Click “OK.” There will
be a “Smart Object” sign next to your layer's thumbnail.
Now, go to the Filter menu again and apply the filter.
Here's what
your Layers Palette will look like.
You can now turn the visibility
of the filter on and off. Double-click the name of the filter and you'll
be able to adjust settings again (should you decide that your texture
has too much depth for example.) You can mask the effect out, play
with Blend Modes and you'll be able to apply Layer Effects as usual
(drop shadow, etc.).
I hope that you will now play with your program
and textures a little bit more and use the features you might not even
knew you had!

Photoshop and Photoshop Elements classes. Teachers will be
required to create class PDFs that will be reviewed prior to
class. Teachers have complete flexibility in scheduling classes.
Candidates must have strong skills in Photoshop and/or Photoshop
Elements and have strong layout design skills. Knowledge
of both programs is a plus. They must be warm and friendly,
comfortable handling fast-paced chat room situations, and
able to easily handle questions that arise regarding their
particular software area of expertise.
Candidates will be required to audition for this paid position.
There will be a list of topics available from which classes
can be developed, however, the teachers are encouraged to present
their own ideas for approval as well.

need your real name, just your screen name!
You have until Midnight EST on Sunday, February
3rd to sign up for the first round of Bingo! Any e-mails received
