Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS2
Name of challenge: Love
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
Have you ever used a finished paper as an overlay? That is what I
did with this page. I first opened Jan Hicks' Sew Torn Up Overlay,
then rotated and scaled it up. I chose a color from my photo, filled
a layer and then turned the Blend Mode to "Overlay." It was beautiful,
but I wanted more pattern for this Valentine layout. I then opened
the Brocadelious Paper and brought it onto my page and turned
that Blend Mode to "Overlay," too. That was just what I wanted. All
I had to do was activate the Sew Torn Up Overlay, select it
with the Magic Wand, then go back and activate the Brocadelicious
Paper and delete the extra. This completely transformed both the
template and the paper, creating something brand new.

Name of layout: One Heart
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS3
Name of challenge: Love
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
Most rubber stampers are familiar with the technique of stamping with
bleach. Here’s a technique I learned from Susan Neff to achieve
that effect with your digital brushes. Create a new layer under the
layer you want to “stamp” on and fill it with white. Select
your Eraser Tool and lower the Opacity. I used 15% for mine. Select
the stamp you want to use – I used one of the lovely stamps from
Jan Hicks’ Floral Medley 2 Brush Set Biggie. Select the layer
you want to “stamp” on and and then click where you want
the stamp. If the effect is not as strong as you want, click again
while in the same spot.

Name of layout: Valentine’s Box Card
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS3/Elements 6.0
Name of challenge: Love
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
For the box, I used Jan Hicks' Alpine Lodge Scrapsimple Papers on
the outside. I wanted the colors to match Amanda McGee’s Love
Notes Paper that I used on the lid. I opened Jan’s template
and then added Amanda’s paper on its own layer. Using
the Eyedropper Tool, I selected colors from Amanda’s paper for
my striped template. When I had my striped paper looking the way I
wanted it, I deleted the Love Notes layer.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
In order to make the heart-petal flower, I used Jan’s Layer
Your Own Brushes: Hearts. I first created a heart that I liked
in a separate file from my layout. I then moved that heart onto my
layout and made it smaller. To create the petals, I duplicated the
heart five times, and rotated each heart 60 degrees from the one
before it. For the center of the flower, I used one of the felt buttons
from Syndee’s Loopy Love Collection Mini.

Name of layout: You and Me
Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0
Name of challenge: Love
Other Ingredients:

- Font - Elegant
- Font - Bakersville Old Face
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To create my curled up paper heart, I took the heart shaped element
from Jan’s ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Curled Frames
Biggie and dragged it onto my layout. I then brought over
the paper I wanted to be inside the heart shape and layered it above
my background paper. Using my Magic Wand Tool, I selected the
area inside of the heart shaped curl, then I inverted my selection
(Ctrl+Shift+I) so that everything outside of the heart shape
was then selected. I
made sure I had the darker pink paper layer selected, and then I hit
Delete. This deleted the area of dark pink paper on the outside
of my heart curl, leaving the inside of the heart shape filled with
the pink paper. With the Curled Frames layer selected, I then
played with the Hue/Saturation/Lightness adjustments, after clicking
the Colorize box, until it became the right shade to complement my
papers.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To create the cream colored ‘vellum’ of the scalloped
square on the Jan Hicks’ Greeting Card,
I used Erica Hite’s new ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Colored Vellum 5401.
With my Color Picker, I chose the color that I wanted the vellum to
be from the paper I used on the card, and set that color in my Color
Overlay Layer Style. I then played with the Blend Mode of the Color
Overlay until I was happy with the ‘vellum’ look, finally
using the "Lighten" mode at 100%.

A Designer's Life: Keri Schueller
My “Official” Story
The story I’ve told myself about me, for as long as I can remember,
is being challenged due to a recent event that has taken place. While
I’m not comfortable talking about what happened, I feel a need
to talk about what is happening because of said event. This is my story
and I’m not stickin’ to it anymore....
I am quiet, timid, somewhat weak and fearful. I go about my days with
an ingrained belief that I am somehow less valuable than those around
me.
The world doesn’t owe me anything but I certainly owe the world
as many apologies as I can dish out simply for being me.
Why? Why in
the world would anyone willingly tell herself a story like that?
Maybe
it is just due to a low self-esteem but I think it is more complicated
than that. I think I’ve been playing a victim for most of my
life. Boy, that’s not a fun thing to type. Once again, why? It
certainly isn’t what I dreamed of being when I grew up. I’m
still not completely sure but I have a sneaking suspicion that it has
something to do with the fact that victims are never at fault. I could
never be the one in the wrong if I’m always the one on the receiving
end of the hurt. But, what kind of life is that?
I am currently facing
a situation that most people would quickly say has made a victim out
of me, but the strangest thing is happening. I don’t always feel
that way. Sure, there are moments that I ask things like, “how
could this happen to me?” but I find
myself also having moments of wondering, "how I could have let this
happen?" In other words, what role did I play in this tragedy? That’s
a pretty big step for me and it’s a little embarrassing to admit
that for so many people to see. But, it’s true and I’m
ready for all of the truth I can get my hands on.
I’m ready to
be happy.
I’m realizing that I am in a large part responsible
for making that happen and it begins with me putting an end to this
less-than-healthy story I’ve been telling myself for years.
I’ve
also learned that I’m pretty convincing when I want to be.
The
thing that stands out the most to me through all of this is that I
call myself a Christian, which has always been true, but my faith is
being challenged because it needs to be. Christ gave up His life so
that I could live life to the fullest, but I haven’t been
choosing that at all. Instead, I’ve been operating out of response
to fear and certainly not faith.
A wise person once told me that I need
to have enough faith and courage to have a dream for myself and it
is only now, after being faced with tragedy, that I can really see
the truth in that. It certainly won’t
be easy to re-write my entire story, but I feel like it will be well
worth it.
- Keri

Favorite product I've designed:
A New Leaf Collection Mini

This collection means a lot to me because I created it at a time in
my life when I realized that the process of renewal was essential.
The word art and graphics really speak to me as I find myself in this
transitional time of my life.

Scrap Girls Club Concepts

The Scrap Girls Monthly Club allows you to get all of the newest looks
while saving money! It is perfect for anyone who wants beautiful, coordinated
digital scrapbooking supplies that are easy to use. You get all the
products shown above, a $29.33 value, for $9.99 or less! Plus, each
month we will help you find new ways to use your club contents to the
fullest with this article full of ideas, tips, and projects to get
your creativity going!
February’s Scrap
Girls Club’s featured designer is Syndee Nuckles.
Her club is full of rich, provincial colored and textured products
that can help you get creative in amazing ways. Let’s look
a little closer and see what ideas we can come up with for this club.

Layout ideas:
- Use the newspaper pattern from the Paper Mini to create a newsworthy
layout about your kids' achievements.
- Scrap your daughters having an old-fashioned (or pretend) tea party.
- Weddings
- Favorite teachers
- Kitchen-themed layouts
- The red papers would make beautiful heritage layouts with any sepia-toned
photos.
- Whole cookbooks can be made with this collection.
- Use the Notable Word Art to create letter-writing or love letter
layouts.
- Create a wrapping paper or partially opened present layout using
the paper curls.
- The color scheme matches other countries' flags for Bolivia, Ethiopia,
Ghana, Guinea, Lithuania, Mali, Portugal, Senegal, Spain... Would
also work well for Mexico or Mexican food when paired with Cherise's Viva
Mexico Collection!
- Valentine's Day!
- All the cool buttons can be used for sewing, quilting, my first
sewing machine, or learning to sew layouts.
- Apple and pumpkin picking
- Mother and daughter relationships

Layout by Kara Swanson

Embellishment ideas:
- Use a flower instead of an "O" in a title.
- The paper in this collection could be "pieced" into
a quilt (four squares by four squares, for example). A fabric textured
paper template and stitching would make it look realistic.
- Use the buttons as the centers of flowers.
- The scalloped ribbons and papers make some really cute girl pants!

Layout by Christy VanderWall

Printable project ideas:
- Valentine's Day candy wrappers
- Photo frame mattes
- Checkbook covers
- Kitchen artwork
- Create a menu for a nice meal with company. Make place setting
cards to coordinate. Place a flower that overlaps the card fold
and cut around the flower so it pops out at the top.
- Altered paint cans
- Altered jumbo playing cards
- Decorate oversized clothespins to use as photo holders
- Create pretty wrapped soaps, tied with hemp string
- Create your own seed packets
- Create a paper topiary, or paper flowers; make a paper bouquet
- Jar toppers for valentine gifts. You just cut out a circle about
three times bigger than the top of a jar, place the circle on the
jar, smooth over the edge and fasten with ribbon.
- Recipe Cards

Project by Angela Nussbaum

Card ideas:
- Valentine's Day cards
- Bridal shower invitations
- Make your own personalized stationery and "Thank You" card set

Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed! for Adobe Photoshop Elements
versions 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 & 5.0
It's time for you to stop playing
catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more
advanced tricks that you see other people and professional
digital scrapbookers doing.
- Take the world's easiest shortcuts to
creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
- Make sure that you don't make the biggest
mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create
layouts.
- Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap
Girls ScrapSimple products.
- Dip your digital scrapbooking self into
some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there
waiting in your software for you to use such as paths,
masks, the drawing pen, and more.
- See how easy it is to install and manage
new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you
can make things that are creative and unique.
- Learn advanced tricks for using tools
that you already know and love.
- Watch me make some beautiful papers and
get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear...
That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind
to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside
of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside
of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
- See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm
betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used
to do that with, too...)
- Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets.
(You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets
frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this
trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all
along.)
- Find out why Custom Shapes are so important
to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
- Learn how to cut out a title from a background
or a photo.
- And even more...
Note: These are NOT beginning
tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used
Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself
in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have
to understand layers, where things are located, and all of
the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook
Software Secrets Revealed series before you try
to use it. |

Ro personally uses Carbonite to
back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives,
it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important
documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely
up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying
about losing important business and financial files, because
the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
