Guest Interview with C.D. Muckosky

1. Tell us about the latest, greatest project you are working on.
I am working on some new albums and projects that I will be teaching in 2008. I LOVE teaching classes and I think that these projects will be super fun! It is so exciting to meet scrappers from all over the world and such a gift to me when I can reach and inspire them in some new way.
2. What project have you done you liked the best and why?
I am sitting here staring at this question and I can't seem to come up with a good answer! I have worked on all kinds of projects in the past year, but looking back, I seriously can't pick just one thing to call my favorite. I have put so much heart into the things I have done and have seen so much growth in myself through my experiences that they all become a part of me and my creative journey. I guess you could say that I like it ALL the best!
3. Why do you do what you do?
I do it to express and to create, to relax and to explore. I do it to share and I most definitely do it to have fun and PLAY! I do what I do because it is the way I can best wrap up all of the love and thoughts, memories and words that I have for the ones I care about in a way that they can hang on to.
Scrapbooking truly brings together the passions that have always been a part of me to the core; all kinds of art, taking and collecting photos, journaling, gathering memorabilia and just creating. I love having something that brings that all together for my family and nourishes my creative spirit at the same time.
4. Does digital scrapbooking play a role in what you do?
Oh, yes! I feel like I found my style though the freedom of digital scrapbooking. I started with paper, but with natural tendencies to second guess myself and be a perfectionist, I found it really hard to just let go and not over-think what I was doing. The ability to undo or remove layers with digital creating allows me to really let go and play! Once I could do that, it was much more fun to add back in the things that I love about paper scrapping and just mix it all up together.
5. What’s your most used tool?
It's a three-way tie I think, between my computer, my paint and my
black Sakura micron pens.
6. What’s one secret that got you where you are today?
Everything that I do is completely from my heart. When it comes from a place of love and passion and spirit, then that genuine beauty of the story or the moment seems to unfold in the very details of each page. And, truly, 30 years from now that is what will matter. Right? As soon as I start over-thinking who is going to be looking at my work or what their expectations of me might be, then all of that good genuine spirit flies out the window. My secret is to be genuine and always hang on to why I am doing this.
7. What question do you get asked the most and how do you answer it?
There are two. I get asked what C.D. stands for and it is no secret, as some people think! My first name is Christie-Dawn, but I have been called C.D. since I was just a little girl. And, the second is that I get asked almost daily about my blog and how people can use Blogger, but still have a really fun and unique looking blog. Unfortunately, that is one I do not know the whole answer for. I am blessed to have a software developer for a husband and he is the one who makes it all work for me online.
8. If you could change anything about scrapbooking, what would it be?
All of the drama and negativity that seems to go on in scrapbooking communities. I have always been a gal to steer clear of drama. It was the thing that drove me mad in high school and I try my best to keep my nose out of it now, too. Scrapbooking, for me, is about an expression of love and preserving thoughts and memories, so I do my best to keep that as my focus. My art "feels" more positive and flows better when I keep my eyes on things that are good and life-giving for me. I do have to say, though, as much as I would love to change the drama, I have been equally impressed with the support and kindness that can be found as well in a lot of scrapbooking communities.
9. What’s one of your goals?
The same as many moms, I think. Finding and keeping a good balance. Not in art and on my pages (although, that kind of balance is good, too) but a balance between my home life with my precious family and my work time. It is always an evolving process, but I have worked it out so that I am a 100% stay at home mama when I am with the girls during the day and then I do my work 100% after 8 p.m. That way, I can be totally focused where I need to be and not splitting myself in all directions.
10. Name something about you that you think nobody knows (that you don’t mind sharing, of course)?
I was certified as a nursing assistant and then an emergency medical responder before I was 18. My passion, as a little girl, was so strong for art, but my amazingly strong and brilliant, single mama encouraged me to set my sights on a career path that would leave me always able to support my family if I needed to. I was fascinated by medicine and loved helping people, so I decided I would take that road. It is neat how the passion and dreams of becoming an artist found their way back to me so many years later.
11. How can we keep informed about what you’re up to?
My blog is at www.cdmuckosky.blogspot.com.
Tutorial: Combining Digital Layout Templates
Note: Tutorial created using PSE 5 with Windows Vista.
If you’re like me, you love using digital layout templates to
create your digital scrapbooking layouts. They are fun, easy to put together
and perfect for those last minute layouts. But, did you know that another
way to get the most out of these templates is by mixing and matching?
Mixing
and matching is very simple. It can be as simple as pulling a frame from
one template to another or combining elements from several templates
to get a new look. Below, you’ll find that I used the ScrapSimple
Digital Layout Templates: Album Series 2 along with the ScrapSimple Digital
Layout Templates – Layered: Silhouettes to get this finished look.

First, open each of these templates one at a time. I start with the
album templates and put them together like I normally would. Then, I
open the Silhouette template and bring in all of the flowers pieces.
Once I position them as I like, I then go back to my original template
and move around any pieces I am not happy with. In the above example,
I moved the tab from the right side to the left.
Once you get your layout
together, you may find that you need to do some adjusting. If you want
to trim any pieces, simply take your Marquee Tool, select the spot where
you want to trim and then press Delete. This will help you trim off any
spots you would like to resize.

Also, if you are working with a template that’s not layered (the
ones with the holes cut out) and you find after putting together your
layout that you want to have a solid spot instead of a hole, you simply
follow these directions. Create a new layer and then, with a shape chosen
(generally the square) create a shape on that new layer that will fill
the hole. Then, merge the layer and the template you’re trying
to fill in.
Once you’ve done all of your adjustments, then you’re
ready to save and finish the layout as normal. Remember, when you save,
save as a PSD file so that you can reuse this new template at a later
date.

MORE
Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed! for Adobe Photoshop Elements
versions 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 & 5.0
It's time for you to stop playing
catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more
advanced tricks that you see other people and professional
digital scrapbookers doing.
-
Take the world's easiest shortcuts to
creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
-
Make sure that you don't make the biggest
mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create
layouts.
-
Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap
Girls ScrapSimple products.
-
Dip your digital scrapbooking self into
some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there
waiting in your software for you to use such as paths,
masks, the drawing pen, and more.
-
See how easy it is to install and manage
new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you
can make things that are creative and unique.
-
Learn advanced tricks for using tools
that you already know and love.
-
Watch me make some beautiful papers and
get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear...
That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind
to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside
of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside
of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
-
See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm
betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used
to do that with, too...)
-
Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets.
(You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets
frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this
trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all
along.)
-
Find out why Custom Shapes are so important
to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
-
Learn how to cut out a title from a background
or a photo.
-
And even more...
Note: These are NOT beginning
tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used
Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself
in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have
to understand layers, where things are located, and all of
the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook
Software Secrets Revealed series before you try
to use it. |

Ro personally uses Carbonite to
back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives,
it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important
documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely
up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying
about losing important business and financial files, because
the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
