Life Muses by Ro: Almost Perfectly
If you’ve been reading the Scrap Girls newsletter for a while
now, you know that several months ago I had eye surgery. Because I
am 50 years old, the correction needed to occur in a manner that would
allow me to read, while ensuring that my long distance vision is adequate.
As a result, the eye doctor gave me something called monovision.
Monovision
simply means that one eye is corrected to see close up – so
it is your reading eye. The other eye is corrected so that it sees
far away – so it is your long distance eye.
When you receive monovision,
it takes a while for your brain to adjust to the new situation – at
least, it did for me. I could instantly use my computer because the
distance lies in the middle and my monitor screens are large. (That
was a relief!) But, reading was very difficult and I quickly found
that I got confused if I went into stores, particularly bookstores.
All of the details overwhelmed me.
To make things worse, I had light
sensitivity and halos when looking at bright lights. I simply couldn’t
drive at night, as oncoming headlights overwhelmed my vision.
I felt
sick. What had I done? Had I ruined my vision – and my
life?
I remembered what my eye doctor had said to me, “Be patient.
It may take a while for your brain to get used to the new situation.”
I
also knew that the doctor wouldn’t even consider redoing my
eyes until after three months had passed, as the eyes are still healing
during that period and your vision may change.
I am glad that I was
forced to soldier through it now. I can read beautifully. The middle
vision fuzziness has retreated, as my eyes aren’t battling each
other for dominance. The light sensitivity is going away (after a course
of steroid drops and time passage) and the halos have nearly faded.
But,
I have one problem: my long distance vision isn’t quite
good enough. Technically, it is good enough to pass the driving test.
But, “untechnically,” it isn’t good enough to keep
me from going batty. Things are slightly fuzzy. I have to sit closer
to the television than I like. I can’t read the numbers of the
hymns we will sing at church, because the display is too far away.
I find myself squinting at everything as my brain desperately wants
to sharpen the picture.
I’ve been tested and, sure enough, my
left eye – which
is the eye that received the long distance correction – has slipped
backwards. At my last visit, it was tested at 20/30. I suspect it has
gone downhill since then.
I will have it corrected again in February – once
the three month waiting period is over – and then I will have
the vision that I longed for when I started this journey. I’m
not afraid now, because I can “see” that it is possible
and that the outcome will be good. I also know that my eye doctor is
willing to ensure that I end up with 20/20 in that eye.
But, my experience
has taught me a lesson that I hope I will never forget: “almost
there” is not good enough.
I “almost” have perfect
vision – but because it
isn’t perfect vision, I am uncomfortable. If I apply this principle
to my life, I realize that when I “almost” get a job done,
I have let myself down. When I “almost” finish painting
the trim in my home, I haven’t finished it. I need to drag myself
out one more time and complete the job. If I do, the weight of the “almost” won’t
be sitting in the back of my mind, interfering with other activities
I might wish to do “if I didn’t have to finish that paint
job that is almost finished.”
-
If I “almost” get ready to go in the morning, I am
not ready to go anywhere and so I simply don’t go anywhere.
I stay at home and I miss what I might have seen outside my walls.
-
If I “almost” always pray, I am denying myself the
strength that I would have enjoyed on the occasions when I ran
into my life without stopping to communicate with my Heavenly Father.
-
If
I’m “almost” committed to improve my health,
I never begin to improve my health. It becomes an impossible dream
because I can’t quite summon the courage to overcome the thing
that is causing me to “almost” be ready to do it.
As I’ve considered the term “almost,” I’ve
realized that it is a word that, if used carelessly, can lead to inaction,
excuses and procrastination. But, let’s not beat up too hard
on “almost,” because it can occasionally mean that something
good has nearly arrived.
It is “almost” time for my section
eye surgery. I am excited for it, but am grateful that I’ve had
the opportunity to see “almost” perfectly.
It was an unexpected gift that has been rippling through my life, making
me question how often I have allowed myself to “almost” do
what I want to do.
This muse is “almost” over now. But
first, I need to say that I can see perfectly that life can teach us
the lessons we need to learn, if only we are willing to see them.

Tutorial: Photo Collage with
Blended Overlap
Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop
CS3 on Windows XP.
For today’s tutorial, I wanted to create a photo collage where
the overlapping edges of the photos gently faded into each other, while
leaving a crisp outside edge.

To begin, arrange three photos into a
collage on a 12”x12” blank
canvas. The edges of each photo need to overlap more than one inch each.

In the
Layers Palette, make the top photo layer active (highlighted blue).
Then, click on the Layer Mask icon at the bottom of the Layers Palette
to create a layer mask. The layer will show a second thumbnail when
the layer mask has been applied.
Layer masks are very useful in digital
scrapbooking because the changes are not permanent. At any time, if
you wish the layer to return to its original state, simply delete the
mask.

Using the Rectangle Marquee Tool, select a portion the left edge
of the photo by clicking and dragging the mouse across the photo (the
width you wish the fade to appear). The marching ants will be visible
around the selection.
Note: You may find it easier to
make an exact selection if you zoom in closer to your photograph.
Any time
you are working with a layer mask, the foreground and background colors
automatically change to black and white. Black added to any portion
of the mask will make the photo (or paper or whatever is masked) disappear,
leaving the layer below visible. White added to any portion of the
mask will make the photo reappear.
Because I want the edges to disappear,
I select black as my foreground color.

To make the fade a gentle transition,
use the Gradient Tool (under the Paint Bucket). With the Gradient Tool
selected, along the Option Bar, click on the drop-down menu to the
right of the color gradient. The Gradient picker will appear – click
on the top left square to use the Foreground/Background colors for
the gradient.
Also on the Option Bar, select the left icon, Linear Gradient,
as your gradient type.
To apply the gradient, click and drag the mouse
across the width of the marching ants, starting from the outside edge
of the photo going towards the center of the photo.

The gradient creates
a gentle fading effect on the edge of the photo. Use Ctrl+D or
Select> Deselect to turn off the marching ants.
Repeat
this process with the right side and top of the photo by using the
Rectangle Marquee Tool and the Gradient Tool again.

Where the fading
from the top and the side intersect, you may see a new sharp edge created
(noted by the red circle).

To correct this, use the Brush Tool with
a soft edged brush and black as the foreground color. In my sample,
I used the Airbrush Soft Round Brush with a Master Diameter (Size)
of 200 pixels and Opacity of 50%.

By clicking a few times with the mouse,
this edge fades away.

To continue on the collage, select the next photo,
add the layer mask, and use the Rectangle Marquee Tool, Gradient Tool
and Brush Tool to soften the edges.

Here is how the photos appear after
the mask work. Notice that all three photos gently fade into one another
to create a seamless image.

January Board Game: Progressive
Word Scramble
Here's how it works. The object of the game
is to correctly guess a boutique item by solving clues and
unscrambling letters we give you. Each day you are given a
letter or several letters of the name of a boutique item as
well as a clue. You won't know how many letters are in the
boutique item name until it is complete. We will keep giving
clues until a correct guess is made.
The designer's name is not included as part
of the puzzle, and the word "collection" is not included
as part of the puzzle either. Letters from any other words
in product names (such as "biggie", "brush", or "transparency")
may be given as part of the puzzle.
Here is an example:
Day 1 Letters: i
Day 1 Hint: I'm oh so pretty
Day 2 Letters: t n
Day 2 Hint: I know you'll love my soft reds, and blues, and
greens
Day 3 Letters: u o i
Day 3 Hint: It was so nice of Angie to give me some flowers
Answer: Angie Briggs' Intuition Collection
Be the first to answer it correctly and
win a $5.00 Gift Certificate to the Boutique! You are only
allowed ONE guess per daily clue, and you are only allowed
ONE win per month. When you make your guess, you MUST link
it to the boutique item you are referencing. We will play the
game daily during the entire month of January. When a correct
answer is given, the new puzzle will start the following day.

January Layout Contests:
Layout
Contest: You could win a $10 Gift Certificate
to the Boutique! With New Year’s Day here, we tend
to think in terms of our resolutions for the year ahead.
How about taking some time to reflect on the year that
has just passed? You could look at the resolutions you
made last year at this time and scrap about how you did
at keeping them. Or on a less serious note, you could do
a retrospective of your year with a few (or several) photos
that highlight your year. Maybe there is one event in your
year that was extra special, like a wedding, a birth, or
a death in the family. So let’s see your layouts
highlighting the year just past.
Mid-January
Layout Contest: The new year can be a time for new
beginnings and fresh starts. Maybe you've recently reorganized
a room, put an addition on or remodeled your home. Or, maybe
you are working on turning over a new leaf in your life.
We want to see your layouts about something that's giving
you a fresh start (past or present). Post your layouts in
the correct gallery, and if your layout is chosen, you'll
win a $10 GC to the Boutique! All layouts are due by February
14, 2008 at Midnight, ET!

It's time for you to stop playing
catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more
advanced tricks that you see other people and professional
digital scrapbookers doing.
- Take the world's easiest shortcuts to
creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
- Make sure that you don't make the biggest
mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create
layouts.
- Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap
Girls ScrapSimple products.
- Dip your digital scrapbooking self into
some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there
waiting in your software for you to use such as paths,
masks, the drawing pen, and more.
- See how easy it is to install and manage
new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you
can make things that are creative and unique.
- Learn advanced tricks for using tools
that you already know and love.
- Watch me make some beautiful papers and
get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear...
That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind
to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside
of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside
of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
- See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm
betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used
to do that with, too...)
- Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets.
(You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets
frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this
trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all
along.)
- Find out why Custom Shapes are so important
to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
- Learn how to cut out a title from a background
or a photo.
- And even more...
Note: These are NOT beginning
tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used
Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself
in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have
to understand layers, where things are located, and all of
the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook
Software Secrets Revealed series before you try
to use it. |

Ro personally uses Carbonite to
back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives,
it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important
documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely
up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying
about losing important business and financial files, because
the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
