Life Muses by Ro: Blowing My Hands Dry
Balancing my heavy backpack and purse, I waddle through the Phoenix
airport looking for the first thing that any woman longs to see when
she arrives in a new city: the women’s bathroom. I have to travel
through two long concourses and down a series of escalators before
I spot the one I am to use.
When I walk up close, I see that my assumption
about it being the only facility between the concourse and the luggage
pickup is correct, as a long line of women patiently wait for their
turn inside of their first Phoenix destination.
The wait gives me time
to look around the room and I quickly spot some items I have never
seen before. Attached to the wall, at the end of the row of sinks,
are two space-aged looking hand blowers. But, these machines don’t
blow hot air down on their user’s
hands. No, this equipment requires that women insert their hands inside
of metal jaws.
The women ahead of me choose to ignore the contraptions,
despite the bright signage informing everyone that enters the room
that the use of the new age hand blowers will quickly remove water
and reduce the bacterial level on their hands by 99.9%.
The women act
as if the machines do not exist. They soap up their hands, pump out
their usual allotment of paper towels, dry off, throw the towels away
and leave the room. On and on it goes. Paper towels. Paper towels.
Paper towels.
Never being one to do things the usual way, I knew what
I had to do: I would use the machines.
When the moment of truth arrives,
I walk over to one of them. Truthfully, it feels intimidating to stick
my hands in the gaping jaws that greet me. The woman who is next to
me looks at me in horror, as if she is about to witness a kidnapping.
I
hold my breath and drop my hands in. Instantly, the water is drawn
away from my hands, blowing it into openings that line the mouth and,
before I realize what has happened, it is all over: my hands are perfectly
dry. As I pick up my bags, I see the face of the woman next to me quickly
change from fear to admiration to regret that she hadn’t been
brave enough to try it herself.
The entire episode took less than five
minutes, but it demonstrates perfectly how the world generally seems
to be. A majority of people follow along, unwilling to try new things.
They are afraid to fail. They are afraid that they will look silly.
They are afraid that something awful will happen to them, should they
try something new. Other individuals become so used to the status quo
that they can’t be bothered with
new ideas and stay in their comfortable little groove.
But, it is those
brave souls who step out into the unknown, try new foods, go for new
experiences, expand their minds with additional knowledge, look for
the unexpected and consider that there might be a better way to do
things that make discoveries. And, often, those discoveries improve
all of our lives.
I challenge each of us to do something new today – even
if it is as small as drying our hands in a unique way.

PSP Tutorial: Creating Glitter With Paint Shop Pro Scripts
Note: Tutorial created using PSPXi and Windows Vista.
I love glitter, but hate the mess and having to vacuum it up. I was
so happy when I learned how to make glitter appear on my digital scrapbooking
pages and no house cleaning was necessary after use! It can take many
steps to replicate the effect, but I have designed a Script to create
it with just a few clicks of the mouse.
While each of the ScrapSimple
Tools - PSP Script: Glitter come with a brush for adding the glitter,
along with color swatches to accurately achieve the glitter color shown
in the marketing, you can use them with many more brushes and colors.
Recently,
there was a comment on the message board about Melissa Renfro’s
Star Bright Brush Set Biggie and the corresponding ScrapSimple
Tools - Styles: Star Bright that she created for Photoshop and
PSE. PSP users were upset because they could not use the brushes.
PSP users, you sure can use those brushes!

Let’s start by opening one of Melissa’s Star
Bright Brush Set Biggie PNGs. I chose "MRE_StarBright_BrushSet_7"
to start. We need to resize it to 999 px for PSPXi and X2, 500 px for
PSPX. Select Image> Resize and set the larger side
to 999 (500) and click "OK."

To export it as a custom brush, select
File> Export> Custom Brush and use the same name
that the designer gave it and, if necessary, use the "Edit Paths" button
to browse to the folder that you wish to save the brush in. Click "OK"
when you are ready. Saving with the same name that the designer gave
it will help you find it and prevent duplicate brushes from being created.
It also makes it easy to give credit to the designer if you post your
layout in an online gallery.

Once you have saved your brush, it will
show up when you activate your Brush Tool on the Toolbar. In the above
image, I have shown the brush at 999 px in black.

Choose one of the
color swatches that come with the ScrapSimple Tools - PSP Script:
Glitter from the Materials Palette. The third tab from
the left is the Swatch tab. Choose the color you would like to use.
Here is the brush using the gold, copper and silver swatches.

Here are
the three swatches after running the ScrapSimple Tools - PSP Script:
Glitter 7504 – Bright Script. Don’t be afraid
to mix and match the scripts, swatches, brush presets and textures
that come with all of the different scripts. They will all work together.

You
can also use the scripts on embellishments, like Erica’s
ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Crochet Snowflakes.

Here,
I ran ScrapSimple Tools - PSP Script: Glitter 7503 Mini - Pastel on
the snowflake. I click on the "Execution Node" button that shows the
steps to the script, so that I can change the noise color to monochrome.
You also have the option to change the texture when you change the
execution mode of the script.

I use my newly created brush with the
silver swatch and brush it on a new layer. I then run the Brush Script
on the layer and add another layer with the brush and white swatch
and then run another Glitter Script. I also create a brush from another
of the PNGs and add more on a third layer.
Have fun with creating mess
free glitter!

Events
January Board Game: Progressive
Word Scramble
Here's how it works. The object of the game
is to correctly guess a boutique item by solving clues and unscrambling
letters we give you. Each day you are given a letter or several
letters of the name of a boutique item as well as a clue. You
won't know how many letters are in the boutique item name until
it is complete. We will keep giving clues until a correct guess
is made.
The designer's name is not included as part
of the puzzle, and the word "collection" is not included as
part of the puzzle either. Letters from any other words in product
names (such as "biggie", "brush", or "transparency") may be given
as part of the puzzle.
Here is an example:
Day 1 Letters: i
Day 1 Hint: I'm oh so pretty
Day 2 Letters: t n
Day 2 Hint: I know you'll love my soft reds, and blues, and greens
Day 3 Letters: u o i
Day 3 Hint: It was so nice of Angie to give me some flowers
Answer: Angie Briggs' Intuition Collection
Be the first to answer it correctly and win
a $5.00 Gift Certificate to the Boutique! You are only allowed
ONE guess per daily clue, and you are only allowed ONE win per
month. When you make your guess, you MUST link it to the boutique
item you are referencing. We will play the game daily during
the entire month of January. When a correct answer is given,
the new puzzle will start the following day.

January Layout Contests:
Layout
Contest: You could win a $10 Gift Certificate
to the Boutique! With New Year’s Day here, we tend
to think in terms of our resolutions for the year ahead.
How about taking some time to reflect on the year that has
just passed? You could look at the resolutions you made last
year at this time and scrap about how you did at keeping
them. Or on a less serious note, you could do a retrospective
of your year with a few (or several) photos that highlight
your year. Maybe there is one event in your year that was
extra special, like a wedding, a birth, or a death in the
family. So let’s see your layouts highlighting the
year just past.
Mid-January
Layout Contest: The new year can be a time for new beginnings
and fresh starts. Maybe you've recently reorganized a room,
put an addition on or remodeled your home. Or, maybe you are
working on turning over a new leaf in your life. We want to
see your layouts about something that's giving you a fresh
start (past or present). Post your layouts in the correct gallery,
and if your layout is chosen, you'll win a $10 GC to the Boutique! All
layouts are due by February 14, 2008 at Midnight, ET!

a Challenge, Win a Prize! Have a great idea for
a gallery layout challenge? Submit it to [email protected].
If your challenge idea is chosen, you will win a prize (such
as a brush set, paper set, embellishment set, etc.). The
prize will be a surprise, but you'll be sure to like it because
you will get to pick out the one you like best (from the
category you'll be assigned to shop in when you are notified
that we are going to use your challenge idea). Friday will
be Customer Challenge Day so keep an eye out on the message
board calendar. It will be fun to see what YOU come up with
for us to do!
Note
from Ro: Scrap Girls is
now giving away birthday gifts to our message board members! Of
course, it is a surprise what you will get because birthday
presents are always surprises! But you will like it for sure
because most people like money... Oops! Did I say that? No.
I didn't say that. You did NOT hear me say that. Anyway, make
sure your message board email address is current and that you
have the correct date entered into your profile or you'll miss
out on the birthday present! (You will only be entering the
month and the date so don't be shy. We won't know how old you
actually are!)

It's time for you to stop playing
catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more
advanced tricks that you see other people and professional
digital scrapbookers doing.
- Take the world's easiest shortcuts to
creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
- Make sure that you don't make the biggest
mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create
layouts.
- Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap
Girls ScrapSimple products.
- Dip your digital scrapbooking self into
some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there
waiting in your software for you to use such as paths,
masks, the drawing pen, and more.
- See how easy it is to install and manage
new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you
can make things that are creative and unique.
- Learn advanced tricks for using tools
that you already know and love.
- Watch me make some beautiful papers and
get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear...
That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind
to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside
of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside
of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
- See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm
betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used
to do that with, too...)
- Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets.
(You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets
frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this
trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all
along.)
- Find out why Custom Shapes are so important
to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
- Learn how to cut out a title from a background
or a photo.
- And even more...
Note: These are NOT beginning
tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used
Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself
in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have
to understand layers, where things are located, and all of
the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook
Software Secrets Revealed series before you try
to use it. |

Ro personally uses Carbonite to
back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives,
it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important
documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely
up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying
about losing important business and financial files, because
the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
