Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

The word art I chose to use from Theresa’s Autumn Gold Collection Mini was in grayscale, and I wanted to apply a different style to each word. I used my Magic Wand Tool with my Tolerance set to 10 and I made sure that Contiguous was unchecked. First I selected the grey in “Timeless” and jumped it to its own layer via Ctrl+J. I did the same with the black in “Moments.” I linked the two layers together and then deleted the original word art. Once I had the words on two separate layers I was able to apply two different styles.

Journaling:

I have always had such a love for reading, for as long as I can remember and I hope that someday you too will learn to love it. But for now, you are struggling with it. We first learned this last year when you were in kindergarten and you went to summer school to help you learn. Now, in first grade, you are doing so much better, but still not at the level you should be. I think that we really need to focus on this more, so that it’s not a chore to read, but something you love to do often!

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

I needed the strings to curve around the the charm so I used the Distort Filter> Shear to make them curve more. Note: The object must be vertical in order to do this, so sometimes I have to make it vertical. Shear it and then reposition it on your page.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

To give my photo of the lily more luminosity, I changed its ‘Fill’ to 50%. I then duplicated the layer and changed its Blend Mode to "Luminosity," keeping it at 100% and taking its ‘Fill’ back to 100%. This resulted in the lily having a much more luminous and posterized look than if I had just left the photo as it was.

A Designer's Life: Durin Eberhart

Questions and Answers

The Designer’s Life articles are a favorite of mine because I am always interested in learning more about my fellow designers. As I get to know them better, I learn more about how they create and how they get their inspiration. For today’s article, I don’t have an inspiring story for you, but a series of questions that might give you some insight into this designer’s life.

Where is your workspace?

I know that several of the designers here have professional, dedicated office spaces, but I work in the kitchen, believe it or not. Over the years, I’ve tried several different spaces for my computer and work area, but I’ve landed just off the kitchen, between the kitchen and our sunroom. It’s the busiest part of the house and tends to get cluttered with homeless bits of this and that, but I can monitor my kids’ activities and homework and even get dinner going while waiting for files to load. Other spaces I’ve tried have been more logical because of the privacy, but I found that I really want to know what’s going on in the house and be able to multitask whenever possible. Being here in the kitchen, in the heart of our home, works for me. Plus, snacks are always nearby.

What aspects of digital scrapbooking are most important to you?

There are several.

One of the best aspects of digital scrapbooking is that it doesn’t clutter up our home! I had a short stint with paper scrapping and it created an organizational nightmare for me. It made me grouchy and I had to keep telling my kids to stay away from my “stuff.” I stored my supplies in huge, ugly, plastic bins and it was impossible to drag it all out and work on anything without disrupting the whole house. Finding digital scrapbooking was a huge relief and put me in a better mood.

The “undo” button and unlimited supplies are two aspects of digital scrapbooking that allow me to have confidence. Another problem I had with paper scrapping was that I was worried that I would make a mistake. I didn’t want to crop my photos because I was afraid I would ruin them. I didn’t want to use the “good” paper because it was expensive and I didn’t think my layout would do it justice. And, I certainly didn’t want to glue an embellishment in the wrong place. It’s difficult to be creative or have fun with so much silly anxiety over making mistakes and wasting supplies. Digital scrapbooking took away those fears because the “undo” button is always there and my supplies never run out. Also, with digital scrapbooking, all of my supplies can be customized to my specifications, whether the colors need to be adjusted or elements need to be resized. And, I can create elements of my own with the ScrapSimple products and have complete control over the design, which is fascinating to me!

What gives you the most artistic inspiration?

All of the other product designers here at Scrap Girls are my main source of inspiration. They are truly a talented group of artists. Week after week their creations amaze me and give me ideas for new color combinations and new products. They are constantly challenging themselves and trying new products and techniques. They are absolute professionals and I’m thrilled to be able to work with them.

What are your scrapbooking-related goals for the year?

I want to continue scanning our old photos so that I can incorporate them into my digital layouts. In 2007, I scanned all of the portraits of our boys, including school portraits, and I would like to continue this year with our old candid shots. If I can convince my mother and grandmothers to hand over their photos, I would love to start working on those. I know that there are some treasures hidden away there!

What are your non-scrapbooking-related goals for the year?

I want to be more diligent about letting people know that I care. We have some old friends that send me a birthday card every year without fail and it’s a wonderful feeling to know that they care. This year, I want to help others feel the same way, whether it’s sending a birthday card or offering to do an errand for them. Sometimes the smallest gestures can be the most meaningful.

What advice would you give to other digital scrapbookers?

Take time to play with your graphics program. Experiment with different techniques. Try out a new tool. Press a new button and see what happens. Create something beautiful. And, most of all, have fun!

- Durin

Favorite product I've designed:
Folly Collection Biggie

The Folly Collection Biggie began with a fantastic color scheme that reminded me of a circus and the papers seem to reflect that same magical feeling. The whole collection made me happy as I worked on it and became a reflection of the laughter and entertainment that often fills our home.

ScrapSimple Club Concepts

Scrap Girls ScrapSimple Club for January

The ScrapSimple club contains items that allow YOU to decide the colors and looks you will end up for your digital scrapbooking designs because the ScrapSimple products are completely customizable. You get all the products shown above, a $19.15 value, for $6.99 or less! And if you would like to create designs to share or sell, there's even a commercial club available! Plus, each month we will help you find new ways to use your club contents to the fullest with this article full of ideas, tips, and projects to get your creativity going!

January’s Scrap Girls ScrapSimple Club’s featured designers are Melissa Renfro and Theresa Kavouras. Their club is full of fun products that can help you get creative in amazing ways. Let’s look a little closer and see what ideas we can come up with for this club.

Layout ideas:

  • Use one of the ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Fancy Folds 4 for a layout about unwrapping a present. Especially a little kid who might be carefully tearing back one piece at a time.
  • The Fancy Folds 4, Photo Masks - Downtown and Slipped Stitches would work well for heritage layouts. It would help make everything look older and antique.
  • Make an "album cover" inspired layout with the ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Downtown. Take a photo of a group with everyone looking off into the distance. Grunge it up a bit with the Downtown Brushes.
  • Use the Slipped Stitches for a page about quilting.
  • Got a wild one with stitches? Use the ScrapSimple Layer Your Own Brushes: Slipped Stitches Biggie to make their page!

Layout by Amy Lemaniak
larger view

Specific embellishment ideas:

  • Use the Photo Masks - Downtown to creating journaling blocks or large photo mattes.
  • You can "punch" a hole in one end of a photo mask and create a funky, shaped tag.
  • With the Fancy Folds 4, try layering two or more tears on top of each other to get a multi-layered effect, as if you had torn back multiple pages from a book.
  • Hang bits of things from the loose stitches, like beads, small tags, alpha charms, etc.
  • You could put one of the Fancy Folds 4 at the top of a layout or card and then make it look like a shirt or dress collar. Add a bow under the collar and some buttons down the front.
  • When you finish your layout, lay one of the Paper Templates: Downtown on the top to grunge it up.
  • Layer word art on top of the Downtown Brushes to make your title.
  • More ideas for using the Slipped Stitches:
    • Stitch down flowers
    • Stitch your journaling paper to the photo
    • Stitch photo to the background paper
    • Stitch a ribbon to background paper
    • Stitch two ribbons together, leaving a gap between them so the paper shows below
  • You can make fun "peek-a-boo" frames from two (or more) sets of the Fancy Folds 4.

Layout by Christy VanderWall
larger view

Card ideas:

  • The Photo Masks - Downtown could be used on a card layered with paper and a greeting.
  • Use the idea of "coming unraveled" with the Slipped Stitches to make "Missing You," "I'm Sorry" or "Thank You" cards for when someone's helped you out in a pinch.

Tips and Techniques:

  • Apply the Paper Templates: Downtown to an existing paper. Change the color to one of the colors in the paper and use your Blend Modes to get unique effects.
  • Fill the Paper Templates with a gradient. This makes the Blend Mode transformation even more interesting.
  • After clipping your photo to your Photo Mask, select the mask layer and change the Blend Modes for a blended look.
  • Create depth by adding brushwork from the Downtown Brushes in a darker color, in the "Multiply" Blend Mode, behind embellishments, or in corners.
  • The Paper Templates would work great layered over photos to create a grungy frame. Simply place over your photo, and resize using the Transform Tool (Ctrl+T).
  • The Photo Masks - Downtown make a beautiful photo frame if you remove the center and apply a Layer Style to it. Or, you can leave the center and use it as a matte or accent. They also make great tools for layering papers to create a background. This layout uses an Orange Paper from Angie's Scenic Route Collection Biggie clipped to "MRE_SSEmb_PhotoMasks_Downtown_BottomFlourish" on top of a Red Paper from Brandy's Spiced Cider Collection to create the background.

Mini Tutorial: Using ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Downtown to Reveal Hidden Layered Papers

Mini Tutorial by Jan Hicks

As soon as I saw the ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Downtown, I knew I had to get my hands on them and play with them. There are so many fun things you can do with Paper Templates. I wanted to find a way to use them a little differently than usual, however. Here's what I did:

First, I chose the papers I wanted to use as a background. I love the wonderful grungy feel of the Downtown Templates, and I wanted to use that to really grunge up one of my background papers. To do that, I layered the red paper from the America Paper Super Mini first, then layered a paper from The Love of Cardboard Collection on top.

Next, I placed the Downtown Paper Template on top. I wanted to use it to "cut" the brown paper away in order to reveal the red paper below. Therefore, I selected all the transparent pixels in the paper template by hitting Ctrl+Clicking on the thumbnail of the paper template layer. This gave me the marching ants around the selection. I then clicked on the eye to turn off the visibility of that layer. Then I switched to the Cardboard paper and hit Delete. Because the Downtown Paper Template is quite grungy with many grey areas, I had to hit Delete several times in order to reveal the full effect of the Paper Template on the Cardboard paper.

I used the same technique on the photos using the Downtown Photo Masks, repeating the grunge effect on the photo as well. To complete the effect, I used a grungy font, and crumpled and messy embellishments and journaling block. All in all, I had a lot of fun playing with this paper template and seeing how I could stretch its use!

January Events

January Board Game: Progressive Word Scramble

Here's how it works. The object of the game is to correctly guess a boutique item by solving clues and unscrambling letters we give you. Each day you are given a letter or several letters of the name of a boutique item as well as a clue. You won't know how many letters are in the boutique item name until it is complete. We will keep giving clues until a correct guess is made.

The designer's name is not included as part of the puzzle, and the word "collection" is not included as part of the puzzle either. Letters from any other words in product names (such as "biggie", "brush", or "transparency") may be given as part of the puzzle.

Here is an example:

Day 1 Letters: i
Day 1 Hint: I'm oh so pretty

Day 2 Letters: t n
Day 2 Hint: I know you'll love my soft reds, and blues, and greens

Day 3 Letters: u o i
Day 3 Hint: It was so nice of Angie to give me some flowers

Answer: Angie Briggs' Intuition Collection

Be the first to answer it correctly and win a $5.00 Gift Certificate to the Boutique! You are only allowed ONE guess per daily clue, and you are only allowed ONE win per month. When you make your guess, you MUST link it to the boutique item you are referencing. We will play the game daily during the entire month of January. When a correct answer is given, the new puzzle will start the following day.

January Layout Contests:

Layout Contest: You could win a $10 Gift Certificate to the Boutique! With New Year’s Day here, we tend to think in terms of our resolutions for the year ahead. How about taking some time to reflect on the year that has just passed? You could look at the resolutions you made last year at this time and scrap about how you did at keeping them. Or on a less serious note, you could do a retrospective of your year with a few (or several) photos that highlight your year. Maybe there is one event in your year that was extra special, like a wedding, a birth, or a death in the family. So let’s see your layouts highlighting the year just past.

Mid-January Layout Contest: The new year can be a time for new beginnings and fresh starts. Maybe you've recently reorganized a room, put an addition on or remodeled your home. Or, maybe you are working on turning over a new leaf in your life. We want to see your layouts about something that's giving you a fresh start (past or present). Post your layouts in the correct gallery, and if your layout is chosen, you'll win a $10 GC to the Boutique! All layouts are due by February 14, 2008 at Midnight, ET!

On Saturdays we will be sharing freebies created by you, if they are available. If you are interested in participating, download this PDF with the specifications and you'll be on your way. Please note that if you choose to use any Scrap Girls tools or templates in your submission, commercial licenses for those products are required. Suggest a Challenge, Win a Prize! Have a great idea for a gallery layout challenge? Submit it to [email protected]. If your challenge idea is chosen, you will win a prize (such as a brush set, paper set, embellishment set, etc.). The prize will be a surprise, but you'll be sure to like it because you will get to pick out the one you like best (from the category you'll be assigned to shop in when you are notified that we are going to use your challenge idea). Friday will be Customer Challenge Day so keep an eye out on the message board calendar. It will be fun to see what YOU come up with for us to do!

Note from Ro: Scrap Girls is now giving away birthday gifts to our message board members! Of course, it is a surprise what you will get because birthday presents are always surprises! But you will like it for sure because most people like money... Oops! Did I say that? No. I didn't say that. You did NOT hear me say that.

Anyway, make sure your message board email address is current and that you have the correct date entered into your profile or you'll miss out on the birthday present! (You will only be entering the month and the date so don't be shy. We won't know how old you actually are!)

Check our message board calendar if you have any questions about what is happening at Scrap Girls. All event times are given in Eastern Time Zone unless otherwise noted. • See how easy it is to install and manage new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make things that are creative and unique.
  • Learn advanced tricks for using tools that you already know and love.
  • Watch me make some beautiful papers and get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
  • See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do that with, too...)
  • Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets. (You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all along.)
  • Find out why Custom Shapes are so important to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
  • Learn how to cut out a title from a background or a photo.
  • And even more...

Note: These are NOT beginning tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers, where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed series before you try to use it.

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
