Customer Muse: You Are Not
Alone
After reading many of Ro’s muses, I have been inspired and encouraged
to write down my experiences with anxiety. I started suffering from
what was diagnosed as anxiety when I was 21.
I don’t really remember
how it started or exactly when – it
just happened. If I had to eat or drink anything when people were around,
I would start to feel physically sick, get hot and sweaty and start
shaking. I would do everything I could to not eat out; even if it meant
telling friends that I was not feeling well and would not be going
out with them!
While at home, I had no energy. I would come home from
work, go to my bedroom and just sit and read or do cross-stitch – both
would take my mind off of everything going on around me. The cross-stitch
and reading were my ways of blocking out the world, the anxiety and
being able to cope.
Since I lived at home with my parents, they started
to get worried about me and in the end, my mom persuaded me to visit
one of the doctors at the local health center. By this time, I was
imagining the worst possible problems and diseases that I could have
to cause my symptoms.
I was lucky and the doctor that I went to recognized
my problem as anxiety. It was good to know what the problem was, but
this only brought up more and more questions. My doctor decided to
refer me to the psychiatric department of the local hospital, as they
ran a series of anxiety workshops.
I was a mess before the first workshop.
I could not concentrate on anything, I felt sick, I had the shakes,
and the butterflies bouncing around in my tummy were huge.
One of my
big problems was (and still is) dealing with the unknown. I am able
to imagine 101 different possibilities of what is going to happen (most
of them negative) and they run around and around my brain like a stuck
record. I have, however, found from experience that when the “future” does
arrive, it is never as bad as I had expected and all of the anxiety
just disappears in a puff of smoke.
At the first anxiety workshop, I
found that there was going to be a group of eight of us working together
over the next year or so to understand and cope with our anxiety. Just
knowing that others were also going through what I was experiencing
was a great help.
If nothing else, it was a great opportunity to see
that anxiety did not care about where you came from or what you did.
Our group of eight included a full-time mom, a nurse, a student and
an administrative assistant.
It was amazing to hear the range of symptoms
suffered by the group. Mine were nothing when compared with some experienced
by others: heart palpitations, blurred vision, fainting and hyperventilating
(rapid breathing) to name a few of the more extreme. Most of us also
suffered from more minor symptoms: hot or cold flashes, shaking, butterflies
and sweating. Among the eight of us, we were able to put together
a list of over 30 symptoms that we suffered from.
Over the years since
this first workshop session, I have found that the anxiety is a part
of me and will always be with me, day in and day out. The big difference
now is that I can control it (most of the time) and it does not control
me or what I want to do. It has given me experiences in life which
I am able to use to help others who are also suffering from anxiety.
From just explaining what anxiety is, to ways in which people can help
understand their anxiety, to hope to cope with it and move on in life.
Anxiety
has no boundaries. It can be experienced by anyone at any time of life.
The symptoms will be different from person to person and the way in
which people will cope will also be different.
The big thing is, don’t
be afraid to ask for help – you are
not alone.

Thao Stole My Heart From Alton Brown

Layout by Thao Cosgrove
larger
view
There I was, happily feasting on asphalt with Alton Brown, throwing
down with Bobby Flay, and watching with rapt fascination battle after
battle of Iron Chefs when, on the last day of November 2006, a virtual
rabbit hole led me to Scrap Girls and this layout by Thao Cosgrove.
This
scrapbook page was like no scrapbook page I’d ever seen,
much less created myself. I lost myself in the details of it for
a long, long time that night. I kept revisiting the vibrant colors,
the emotion of the photo, the beauty of the quote - the sheer perfection
of the layout itself. My own pitiful attempts at scrapbooking came
to mind in stark contrast - piles upon piles of supplies never used,
for fear of “messing them up” and, before that, oversized
books full of crumbling, yellowed paper and fading newsprint. If
it was possible to do this on a computer, I thought, then take me
to your leader!
I wrote to Thao that night and she immediately responded
with enthusiasm and advice. If I hadn’t been hooked before,
I absolutely was then. I signed up for the Scrap Girls newsletter,
became a member of the board, read as much as I could about scrapping
and started fervently wishing for an updated copy of Photoshop.
I’ve
been thinking about this a lot lately because as November comes to
a close, I’m coming up on my first anniversary with
digital scrapbooking. I don’t really know what made me think
of it, but as I was preparing for Thanksgiving this year, I had the
sudden thought that my year-ago self had never even heard of digital
scrapbooking. I was completely unaware as I ate my turkey dinner
last year that my life was about to undergo one of the most radical
changes ever. That, in the span of only a couple of days, I would
willingly walk away from any and all diversions (especially all of
the Food Network shows that I had come to love over the course of
that summer) and become a digital scrapbooking devotee.
Each of us
has had this experience in one way or another - benchmark events
that mark the end of one thing and the beginning of another - graduation,
marriage, the birth of a child, death of a loved one, a move to a
new place. Each of these new “afters” can
cause you to ponder the before.
Now, a year later, I have a hard time
remembering what in the world I did with all of my time back then.
Before the late, late nights and early, early mornings spent creating
layouts, making my own digital scrapping supplies, creating fun and
meaningful gifts for friends and family, even taking the very scary
step of starting to do my own freelance graphic design for a local
corporation. I took pictures and occasionally journaled - I’ve
always done those things - but, I never had an outlet with which
to showcase them. This is why digital scrapbooking is so exciting
to me. It takes all of the ways that I love to express myself creatively
and combines them into a form that is art, memoir and most of all,
treasure.
Last Christmas, I was proud of myself for thinking ahead
far enough in advance to put together one of those online books featuring
family photos, perfect bound with a beautiful hard cover. If you’ve
been a digi scrapper for any length of time, you can imagine my disappointment
when I opened the books to find tiny captions that you could barely
read under page after identical page of tiny rectangular photos.
It captured the moments of the year, but not in any way that was
beautiful or very thoughtful.
This year, I’ll be making my own
books and designing each and every piece of each and every page.
I’ve also designed my own
Christmas cards, as well as a good number of the families in my community,
through a joint venture with a friend and fellow entrepreneur who’s
started her own photography business. (Who also happens to be one
of my very first Scrap Girls converts!) Just this morning, my kids
and I enjoyed putting together an Advent chain made from simple strips
of paper beautifully decorated with Erica Hite’s A Joyful Season
Christmas collection. I’m giving my sister-in-law a custom
designed purse when we celebrate her birthday this weekend and will
be making all sorts of custom touches - gift tags, bags, and cards
- to include with our gifts.
With one year under my belt, I can say
unequivocally that no creative pursuit has ever brought me as much
joy and satisfaction as digital scrapbooking has. Certainly not my
attempt to create an Ace of Cakes inspired fondant-wrapped cake.

There
won’t be any Furi knives on my Christmas wish list this
year. Give me a gift certificate for scrapping supplies and I’ll
be as happy as a clam.
Somehow, I think the Food Network will do just
fine without me.

January Board Game: Progressive
Word Scramble
Here's how it works. The object of the game
is to correctly guess a boutique item by solving clues and
unscrambling letters we give you. Each day you are given a
letter or several letters of the name of a boutique item as
well as a clue. You won't know how many letters are in the
boutique item name until it is complete. We will keep giving
clues until a correct guess is made.
The designer's name is not included as part
of the puzzle, and the word "collection" is not included
as part of the puzzle either. Letters from any other words
in product names (such as "biggie", "brush", or "transparency")
may be given as part of the puzzle.
Here is an example:
Day 1 Letters: i
Day 1 Hint: I'm oh so pretty
Day 2 Letters: t n
Day 2 Hint: I know you'll love my soft reds, and blues, and
greens
Day 3 Letters: u o i
Day 3 Hint: It was so nice of Angie to give me some flowers
Answer: Angie Briggs' Intuition Collection
Be the first to answer it correctly and
win a $5.00 Gift Certificate to the Boutique! You are only
allowed ONE guess per daily clue, and you are only allowed
ONE win per month. When you make your guess, you MUST link
it to the boutique item you are referencing. We will play the
game daily during the entire month of January. When a correct
answer is given, the new puzzle will start the following day.

January Layout Contests:
Layout
Contest: You could win a $10 Gift Certificate
to the Boutique! With New Year’s Day here, we tend
to think in terms of our resolutions for the year ahead.
How about taking some time to reflect on the year that
has just passed? You could look at the resolutions you
made last year at this time and scrap about how you did
at keeping them. Or on a less serious note, you could do
a retrospective of your year with a few (or several) photos
that highlight your year. Maybe there is one event in your
year that was extra special, like a wedding, a birth, or
a death in the family. So let’s see your layouts
highlighting the year just past.
Mid-January
Layout Contest: The new year can be a time for new
beginnings and fresh starts. Maybe you've recently reorganized
a room, put an addition on or remodeled your home. Or, maybe
you are working on turning over a new leaf in your life.
We want to see your layouts about something that's giving
you a fresh start (past or present). Post your layouts in
the correct gallery, and
if your layout is chosen, you'll win a $10 GC to the Boutique!
All layouts are due by February 14, 2008 at Midnight, ET!

Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed! for Adobe Photoshop Elements
versions 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 & 5.0
It's time for you to stop playing
catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more
advanced tricks that you see other people and professional
digital scrapbookers doing.
- Take the world's easiest shortcuts to
creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
- Make sure that you don't make the biggest
mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create
layouts.
- Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap
Girls ScrapSimple products.
- Dip your digital scrapbooking self into
some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there
waiting in your software for you to use such as paths,
masks, the drawing pen, and more.
- See how easy it is to install and manage
new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you
can make things that are creative and unique.
- Learn advanced tricks for using tools
that you already know and love.
- Watch me make some beautiful papers and
get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear...
That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind
to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside
of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside
of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
- See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm
betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used
to do that with, too...)
- Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets.
(You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets
frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this
trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all
along.)
- Find out why Custom Shapes are so important
to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
- Learn how to cut out a title from a background
or a photo.
- And even more...
Note: These are NOT beginning
tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used
Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself
in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have
to understand layers, where things are located, and all of
the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook
Software Secrets Revealed series before you try
to use it. |

Ro personally uses Carbonite to
back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives,
it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important
documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely
up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying
about losing important business and financial files, because
the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
