Business Corner by Ro: Write Your Goal Down
Because Scrap Girls has so many commercial customers (and so many customers who are interested in business topics) I have decided that I am going to discuss a business topic with you each Thursday in the muse position of the newsletter. Hopefully, the information will be useful to use if you either currently own a business or would like to own one someday. But even if you don’t care to go into business, I believe that you might find it interesting to read about what it takes to run a successful business.

Company Goals, Objectives and Business Philosophy
Your company’s business philosophy is how you will do business – or how you will look at the world through your company’s eyes. The company’s philosophy statement helps you to figure out how you are going to approach your work. Determining the answers to these questions in advance will be helpful to you when you find yourself having to make difficult decisions later on.
For instance, if you have stated in your business philosophy statement that customer service is one of your primary values, then your team must be empowered to do whatever it takes to help the customers efficiently. Because you have already decided that you believe that customer service is one of your chief business values, when you find yourself in a difficult customer situation, you will likely choose to serve your customer rather than defend your position simply because “you are correct.”
Your company’s business philosophy statement should include the following elements:
-
What type of environment do you wish to create
-
What type of experience do you wish individuals to have with your company
-
How you feel about various sides of business issues (profits versus humanitarian efforts, etc.)
Writing company goals and objectives are just as important – if not more so – than understanding what your own personal life-goals are. A company without written goals and objectives is much like a ship without a sail: where it will end up depends on where the current takes it. Company goals and objectives should support the business philosophy statement.
The goals and objectives area of the business plan should answer these questions:
-
What do you hope to accomplish?
-
When do you hope to accomplish these things?
-
What are the big goals you have that will help you achieve your objectives?
Start out by determining what your long range goals are. A business owner should attempt to think out four to five years. Doing so will allow your mind to open up and see a vision of what might be possible.
For instance, when I started Scrap Girls, one of my goals was to create a way for women to work from home. (No offense to the men in the crowd. I was just particularly sensitive to the issues that being a working mother creates and longed to do something about it in my own way.) As a result, one of Scrap Girls original business plan goals (written in 2004) included:
Scrap Girls will become an industry setting model for allowing individuals freedom to work from their homes.
I’ll bet you are surprised to find that goal in a business plan for a digital scrapbooking company, right? But this item was critical to me and so I wrote it in. In doing so, I began working towards creating ways for this goal to be accomplished. A few supporting bullet points from the business plan include:
-
Company use of internet-based technologies will allow for smooth work flow (such as web groups where shared documents, photos, messages can be housed, instant message meetings, regularly scheduled conference calls, email discussion groups and others).
-
Individuals will be accountable for the amount of work they produce, rather than for the time they spend producing it.
-
A project site will be developed where team members can check on the progress of new projects and can be held accountable for the tasks that have been assigned to them.
It might be helpful to understand at this point that my particular project management background (in which I managed teams of people sprawled around the world while working for a major software company) gave me the experience to understand what types of things I would have to accomplish to achieve the larger goal. But, as this goal was one of my primary reasons for starting Scrap Girls, I made sure that I wrote these items into my business plan so that they wouldn’t be floating about in the atmosphere, where they might never be accomplished.
I am happy to report that, at this time, Scrap Girls now has a substantial team of product designers and support individuals (customer support, web, administrative) all working from their homes, managing their lives, and their schedules to suit their families. Our team determines how much work they are able to handle because they are business owners themselves. It is a wonderful arrangement for all of us. I’m more excited about what has happened with this particular goal than any other single thing that is associated with our company.
But, would it have happened if I hadn’t planned for it to happen before we got started? Perhaps… we’ll never know for sure. But, I believe something big happens when we desire to do something bigger than ourselves and we set things in motion when we take the first step: write the goal down.

Review: Assemble Your Own – Pretty Pink Tags
Do you have clear business card case leftovers at home? You can make them into changeable labels for your kids’ books or journals!
First, measure the size of the card case insert.
Create a new document in your graphics program, the size of the insert you measured previously.

Layer your base paper, and then size it accordingly. Create a round corner rectangle; this will be your base for your picture.

Open the layer style menu, and add drop shadow and stroke so it looks like the rectangle is a frame for the picture.

Open one of the AYO Pretty Pink Tags bases.

Layer the words and edges to the base of the tag.

Merge all visible layers then duplicate it to your card case document. Resize it to fit the card case and add a ribbon (one of the accents). Clip a photo to the frame and write the data you want to be printed on the card case.

Print out the inset, slide into your card case and adhere to your children’s books or journals.

Indah Permata Sari lives in Jakarta, Indonesia. She is currently an art director for a wedding magazine. She has learnt digital scrapbooking on and off for three years before taking the plunge and doing real digital scrapbooking earlier this year. She enjoys digital scrapbooking because it is closely related to her full time day job, and it allows her to experiment on layouts unlike anything on her formal job.

or you can use it as inspiration for your own layout look.
It's all up to you!

January Board Game: Progressive
Word Scramble
Here's how it works. The object of the game
is to correctly guess a boutique item by solving clues and
unscrambling letters we give you. Each day you are given a
letter or several letters of the name of a boutique item as
well as a clue. You won't know how many letters are in the
boutique item name until it is complete. We will keep giving
clues until a correct guess is made.
The designer's name is not included as part
of the puzzle, and the word "collection" is not included
as part of the puzzle either. Letters from any other words
in product names (such as "biggie", "brush", or "transparency")
may be given as part of the puzzle.
Here is an example:
Day 1 Letters: i
Day 1 Hint: I'm oh so pretty
Day 2 Letters: t n
Day 2 Hint: I know you'll love my soft reds, and blues, and
greens
Day 3 Letters: u o i
Day 3 Hint: It was so nice of Angie to give me some flowers
Answer: Angie Briggs' Intuition Collection
Be the first to answer it correctly and
win a $5.00 Gift Certificate to the Boutique! You are only
allowed ONE guess per daily clue, and you are only allowed
ONE win per month. When you make your guess, you MUST link
it to the boutique item you are referencing. We will play the
game daily during the entire month of January. When a correct
answer is given, the new puzzle will start the following day.

January Layout Contests:
Layout
Contest: You could win a $10 Gift Certificate
to the Boutique! With New Year’s Day here, we tend
to think in terms of our resolutions for the year ahead.
How about taking some time to reflect on the year that
has just passed? You could look at the resolutions you
made last year at this time and scrap about how you did
at keeping them. Or on a less serious note, you could do
a retrospective of your year with a few (or several) photos
that highlight your year. Maybe there is one event in your
year that was extra special, like a wedding, a birth, or
a death in the family. So let’s see your layouts
highlighting the year just past.
Mid-December
Layout Contest: The end of 2007 is upon us. 2008 will
be starting soon! Do you have any New Year’s Resolutions?
We want you to scrap them! Show us your layouts featuring
your New Year Resolutions and you could win a $10 Gift Certificate
to the Scrap Girls Boutique! Post your layouts to the Monthly
Contest Gallery between December 15th and January 14th to
be eligible. Good Luck!

It's time for you to stop playing
catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more
advanced tricks that you see other people and professional
digital scrapbookers doing.
- Take the world's easiest shortcuts to
creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
- Make sure that you don't make the biggest
mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create
layouts.
- Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap
Girls ScrapSimple products.
- Dip your digital scrapbooking self into
some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there
waiting in your software for you to use such as paths,

- See how easy it is to install and manage
new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you
can make things that are creative and unique.
- Learn advanced tricks for using tools

- Watch me make some beautiful papers and
get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear...
That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind
to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside
of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside
of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
- See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm
betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used
to do that with, too...)
- Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets.
(You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets

Note: These are NOT beginning
tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used

in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have
to understand layers, where things are located, and all of

Ro personally uses Carbonite to
back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives,
it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important
documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely
up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying
about losing important business and financial files, because
the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
