Life Muses by Ro: Scrap Girls Aunties
Drowning in a sea of technical server issues that seemed destined
to swallow me whole, I wandered out to the Scrap Girls message board
to see if I could find something to distract me. It would take a lot,
I knew, because I was feeling stunned that as soon as one issue was
solved, another issue seemed to appear... and as soon as that
one was solved, another one was uncovered. I had been telling the customers
everything I knew in detail throughout the entire ordeal, but suddenly
I wasn’t aware of what I knew... except that I wanted it
to stop.
I longed to wake up and find that it was all a dream and that
my happy purple site was happy again. I ached to have the balance restored,
to feel the edgy nervousness I had been carrying in my gut removed.
I wanted to sleep again minus troubled dreams that made me feel like
the sixth grade girl who had unfortunate shoes that she couldn’t
escape.
Valerie and I had been in meetings all day long, planning for
the upcoming year and she could see that I was becoming increasingly
agitated as the day went along. She told me to get off of the computer
and I tried to obey her. I waved goodnight to her, shut my hotel room
door, but instead of taking the hot bath she suggested, I went to my
computer to check my email, “just in case....”
Just in case
some new problems were discovered....
I sighed as I realized that it
was a blessing that I had checked my computer again because there were
two new issues that needed immediate attention.
I wanted to cry, but
I couldn’t. When you are numb, you are unable
to cry.
And so, I decided to read the Scrap Girls message board. As
I began to check for new messages, I came across a thread in which
our member Zaz – whose real name is Carol Ann – was thankfully
telling everyone that her family was safely home from Haiti with Janae
and that they were all in tears because of the virtual baby shower
that the Scrap Girls aunts had set up for them.
Virtual Baby Shower?
I had missed something while I was in meetings
and talking about servers.
I need to tell you a little bit about Carol
Ann at this point so that the rest of the story will make sense to
you. Zaz is a happy, optimistic person who brightens the Scrap Girls
message board. She is fun to have at chats, is always quick on the
draw when we have games, and has lots of interesting ideas to share.
It didn’t take long after she
introduced herself to become a board favorite because, hey... it
is nearly impossible to not like someone that likes you – and
Zaz likes everyone!
It just so happens that Scrap Girls happens to be
a rather supportive place and so it is not unusual that when our members
have a life crisis or feel that they need special help, they share
what they are facing and ask for prayers and pep talks.
Zaz told us
about her own struggle to adopt a cute little girl from Haiti. It had
become a long, drawn out affair lasting from Janae’s
babyhood through toddlerhood. The biological mother had agreed to the
adoption long before, but everything was endlessly delayed in red tape.
Zaz
asked us to pray for her and she received numerous replies of support.
Over time, people began asking for Janae reports. “What
is happening with Janae?” someone would ask. “Have you
heard anything new?”
Zaz began giving us regular Janae bulletins
as a result, which were very popular strings, as this important life
drama was being played out in front of our eyes. We longed for Zaz
to have Janae home. We wanted them to all be happy and to have the
tension over because we knew that the situation was agonizing for Zaz
and her family.
Right before Christmas everything heated up. The final
details were stuck and Zaz worried about what was occurring, especially
with the holidays coming. Someone discovered that there is a website
where you can go out and light a candle as a visual indicator that
you are praying.
A candle lighting place on that website was set up
especially for the purpose of praying Janae home to Zaz. Many of the
Scrap Girls members began lighting candles and they reported how the
candle burning process was going. Some of the members relit their candles
multiple times to keep the prayers going longer.
(I might add, at this
point, that people of all faiths are welcome, loved and accepted at
Scrap Girls. And, the funny thing about it, everyone understands this
fact without anyone saying it. I’ve never made
a formal statement about it before because frankly, it hasn’t
been necessary. We have members of all faiths imaginable participating
with us and every one of them enrich our lives in amazing ways. How
blessed we are to have this little corner in the world, where we seem
to accept each other because we are all brothers and sisters who are
children of God. We are united by a desire to learn, to grow, to share,
and oh... what is that other thing? Oh yeah... digital
scrapbooking!)
Okay... back to my story....
Finally, the good news came. Janae was
coming home! Zaz announced the good news to the “Scrap Girls
Aunties” and everyone
cheered with joy.
And then Zaz, her husband and their son left for Haiti
and the aunts went into action: They organized a virtual homecoming
shower for Janae.
You are probably wondering what on earth a virtual
shower could be. Virtual baby gifts? Electronic clothing to be placed
on computer-generated babies?
Well, no. It was nothing like that.
This was not a shower in the traditional sense of the word. Yes, there
were gifts, but they are not the kind that Janae will wear and outgrow.
Instead, Janae and her new family were given gifts of the heart.
The
Scrap Girls Aunties created layouts to welcome her home... lots
and lots of layouts, all uploaded to a special gallery just for this
purpose.
The shower had been organized while I was meeting and worrying
and feeling sorry for myself because I was stuck in “server red
tape” that
seemed to stretch out to the end of eternity... which never ends...
All of this kindness and carrying on had been going on while I had
been thinking about something else entirely. Just when I was feeling
kind of hopeless and wondering how long I could continue fixing issues,
I found evidence that there were reasons that I could keep going – and
that I would have help to keep going. I had evidence that the Lord
would answer my prayers and everything would be okay.
I found the evidence
that Scrap Girls is a very special place. And, I had evidence that
it would continue, because it is now about so much more than me and
my individual concerns. I could see that I am just a small little cog
in the mechanism.
Scrap Girls has taken on a life of its own and has
become a testimony that people do care about each other... that
they love each other... that
they pray for each other... that they help each other... that
they enjoy learning, laughing, sharing and yes, even scrapbooking together.
I
discovered all of this evidence in a gallery created by the Scrap Girls
Aunts to welcome Janae home. The layouts were their gifts from the
heart. Their layouts were their celebration of life and of the thing
that had happened as they knew each other. Their layouts were a way
to express how much they cared about a little girl from Haiti that
they had never met.
It was while I browsed through this very large gallery
of “Welcome
Home Janae” layouts that I knew that somehow, the issues would
end. I knew that everything would be set right again and we would move
forward and be strong. I knew that the prayers of our members in our
behalf would be answered in the same way that the prayers for Zaz and
her family were answered.
I am very happy to be a member of a purple
site called Scrap Girls. I’m honored to be associated with such
fine people. And, I am delighted to say that I am “one of the
girls....”
Thanks, Scrap Girls Aunties. You didn’t know
that when you were giving a virtual shower of love, you showered it
all over the Internet and someone who needed that love received it...
me.

Tutorial: Using Templates,
Brushes and Styles to Create an Aged Paper Effect
Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop
CS2 with Mac OS X.
Crumpled, ripped, curled and stained aren’t typically delightful
descriptors, but add anything of the sort to my digital scrapbook page
and I’m quite delighted. There are numerous ways to achieve this
kind of aged paper effect digitally and I’m going to share a
few with you here.
I am using "KSC_SS_Paper_Timeless_5.png" from my ScrapSimple
Paper Templates: Timless as my starting point. You
can also try using other ScrapSimple
Paper Templates, like Stained,
Folded,
Aged,
Scruffy,
Curled
Edges, Raw
Material or Wrinkled.
There are many ways to create various different kinds of embellishments
using the same piece of paper in different ways.

I am going to start
out with the basic shape of a photo frame as seen in the picture above.
This frame looks boring now, but with the use of templates, styles
and brushes, it will become a beautiful embellishment to use in your
layouts.

The
next thing I am going to do is find my digital file of "KSC_SS_Paper_Timeless_5.png".

In the picture above,
I move my paper tempate over to my working frame file and scale it
down by hitting Cmd+T (Ctrl+T on a PC) and hold down
the Shift key while dragging a corner handle to resize
it proportionately. I then position the paper over my frame shape in
a way that will take full advantage of all of those great tears, folds
and curls once I create the frame shape out of the scanned paper.

In
the picture above, you can see that I have selected the frame layer
(bottom layer) and by clicking on the frame’s thumbnail in the
Layers Palette, while holding down the Control key, I am selecting
the frame shape. There should be marching ants in the shape of your
frame that are visible on your paper template layer.

With the frame shape
selected, I select the paper template layer (top layer) and hit Cmd+Shift+I to
inverse my selection and press Delete to erase all of the contents
on the paper layer outside of the frame shape selection. As you can
see, I am now left with the paper template in the shape of the frame
and the frame layer still exists below it.

Next, I simply need to click
on the frame layer and drag it to the trash icon at the bottom of the
Layers Palette to delete it.

I am now left with the paper template in
the shape of my original frame and I’m ready to use brushes and
layer styles to create depth.

I have chosen to apply the Aged Paper
Style 5201_1 as seen in the above picture. The problem with what
you see in that screen shot is that it doesn’t allow for those
great folds to show through, so I need to go in and adjust the Blend
Mode of the Pattern Overlay within the style.

To allow the folds and
other depth of the original paper to show through, I double-click on
the area to the right of the layer name to open the Layer Style Palette
and set the Blend Mode to "Color Burn" and the Opacity to 51% in the
Pattern Overlay section. The first picture above shows the settings
of the Layer Style dialogue box and the second picture shows the results
of those settings.

I want
to use brushes next to further age the paper frame, so I need to create
a new layer above the frame layer. I then merge them together to “flatten” the
styles and allow the layer to be brushed on. To do this, I create a
new layer by clicking on the new layer icon at the bottom of the Layers
Palette and then hold down the Shift key and press Ctrl+E (Cmd+E on
a Mac) to merge the two selected layers.

Now, I am going to choose a
foreground color to use for distressing and choose a brush. I have
opted to use the Ultimate Grunge Brush Set. I haven’t
changed any of the brush settings in the dialogue box, but I did set
the Mode at the top of the screen to "Linear Burn" and the
Opacity to 20%. These options will be available to you as long as you
have the Brush Tool selected. Next, I lock the transparent pixels of
the frame layer by clicking on the lock icon at the top of the Layers
Palette as shown in the picture above. This allows me to paint anywhere
on the screen, but the transparent pixels will not be affected.

I brush
on my frame here and there at random and now I have a great aged frame
full of texture and depth!

Events
January Board Game: Progressive
Word Scramble
Here's how it works. The object of the game
is to correctly guess a boutique item by solving clues and
unscrambling letters we give you. Each day you are given a
letter or several letters of the name of a boutique item as
well as a clue. You won't know how many letters are in the
boutique item name until it is complete. We will keep giving
clues until a correct guess is made.
The designer's name is not included as part
of the puzzle, and the word "collection" is not included
as part of the puzzle either. Letters from any other words
in product names (such as "biggie", "brush", or "transparency")
may be given as part of the puzzle.
Here is an example:
Day 1 Letters: i
Day 1 Hint: I'm oh so pretty
Day 2 Letters: t n
Day 2 Hint: I know you'll love my soft reds, and blues, and
greens
Day 3 Letters: u o i
Day 3 Hint: It was so nice of Angie to give me some flowers
Answer: Angie Briggs' Intuition Collection
Be the first to answer it correctly and
win a $5.00 Gift Certificate to the Boutique! You are only
allowed ONE guess per daily clue, and you are only allowed
ONE win per month. When you make your guess, you MUST link
it to the boutique item you are referencing. We will play the
game daily during the entire month of January. When a correct
answer is given, the new puzzle will start the following day.

January Layout Contests:
Layout
Contest: You could win a $10 Gift Certificate
to the Boutique! With New Year’s Day here, we tend
to think in terms of our resolutions for the year ahead.
How about taking some time to reflect on the year that
has just passed? You could look at the resolutions you
made last year at this time and scrap about how you did
at keeping them. Or on a less serious note, you could do
a retrospective of your year with a few (or several) photos
that highlight your year. Maybe there is one event in your
year that was extra special, like a wedding, a birth, or
a death in the family. So let’s see your layouts
highlighting the year just past.
Mid-December
Layout Contest: The end of 2007 is upon us. 2008 will
be starting soon! Do you have any New Year’s Resolutions?
We want you to scrap them! Show us your layouts featuring
your New Year Resolutions and you could win a $10 Gift Certificate
to the Scrap Girls Boutique! Post your layouts to the Monthly
Contest Gallery between December 15th and January 14th to
be eligible. Good Luck!

Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed! for Adobe Photoshop Elements
versions 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 & 5.0
It's time for you to stop playing
catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more
advanced tricks that you see other people and professional
digital scrapbookers doing.
- Take the world's easiest shortcuts to
creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
- Make sure that you don't make the biggest
mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create
layouts.
- Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap
Girls ScrapSimple products.
- Dip your digital scrapbooking self into
some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there
waiting in your software for you to use such as paths,
masks, the drawing pen, and more.
- See how easy it is to install and manage
new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you
can make things that are creative and unique.
- Learn advanced tricks for using tools
that you already know and love.
- Watch me make some beautiful papers and
get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear...
That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind
to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside
of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside
of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
- See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm
betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used
to do that with, too...)
- Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets.
(You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets
frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this
trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all
along.)
- Find out why Custom Shapes are so important
to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
- Learn how to cut out a title from a background
or a photo.
- And even more...
Note: These are NOT beginning
tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used
Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself
in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have
to understand layers, where things are located, and all of
the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook
Software Secrets Revealed series before you try
to use it. |

Ro personally uses Carbonite to
back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives,
it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important
documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely
up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying
about losing important business and financial files, because
the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
