Life Muses by Ro: Crisp Sheet of White
Note from Ro: I just stumbled on this little
muse I wrote in November. Since this time, we’ve had massive
amounts of snow!

First snow of the season: There is just enough to cover the lawn in
a crisp sheet of white. The sheet is threadbare and when the sun rises
overhead, the remains of the snow will disappear.
The frosty frame on
my bedroom window would be perfect for creating a scrapbooking layout,
should I be able to duplicate the effect, as it makes the bare limbs
of my quaking aspen trees seem charming.
The furnace comes on and I
feel the warm air rise through my toes. I am grateful, once again,
that I live in a modern age in which I am able to enjoy the appearance
of cold beauty from the warm side of the glass.
My family has left for
the day, the sound of scraping across car windows and stomping in and
out of the door before they went remains a dim memory of one who was
trying to stay asleep.
Soon, after my morning scriptures and prayers,
I’ll pull on
warm clothing and walk through my neighborhood and breathe cold air.
When my cheeks have had enough, I’ll return to my cozy office
and feel the warm air blowing on my legs from my computer desktop.
Winter
has arrived in the Salt Lake Valley.
Now that I run a business from
my home, I am free to enjoy the stillness of winter. I do not wage
war with snow on my windshield or sleet on the road. I do not have
to stomp into buildings and worry that my shoes will be ruined by the
moisture. I do not have to attempt to recover my hairstyle with nothing
but a brush and the employee’s washroom
mirror.
I pad around my house in sweaters, sweats and other snuggly
clothes. I eat hot cereal and homemade soup. I turn on the gas fireplace
and sit at my table and make business plans in my notebook. And, I
am grateful that all of the leaky windows have finally been repaired.
It
is winter again... time to plan, to stop, think, listen to silence,
and look out of the window at a snowy sheet covering the lawn.

muse to [email protected]. If it is selected
for publication in the Scrap Girls newsletter, you'll get to have

Designer Do-Over: Laurel
Lakey
My Original

Original by Laurel Lakey
I was searching through some of my older layouts, and
chose to re-do this particular one because it doesn’t really
tell the story I want to tell, and it looks a little boring. But, it’s
got a good basic structure, so I’m not going to have to change
too much to make it shine.
My Do Over

To begin my new layout, I want to use the same color palette, the
blues and greens, but I also want to add some more interest to the
background paper. So I am going to use a green paper from Sarah Batdorf’s Cheery Christmas Collection (see,
you can use holiday products other times of the year!) to use as my
background paper. Then, instead of adding my photos in such a linear
pattern, I want to scatter them down the page, with help from Melissa
Renfro’s Lifted Photos – Weathered
and Worn Embellishment Biggie.

After placing my pictures, I want
to add another contrasting paper to anchor my photos in their position.
I’m using a beautiful
brown paper from Keri Schueller’s Organica Collection,
because I like the color, and also because it has a similar pattern
to the green background paper that I already have. And instead of just
putting a boring column of paper down the left side, I want to add
some detail to that side. So I am using Melissa Renfro’s Paper
Tear Action to make a nice border tear of brown paper
behind my photos.
After seeing the placement of the brown paper against
the photos, I think the best place to put my title and journaling would
be in the bottom right corner, instead of taking up the whole right
side, like the original. This will help to make a more balanced layout,
leaving some visual white space on the top.
I want to use a big, chunky
alpha for the "Read" part
of my title, so I’m going with Amanda Sok’s A Blooming
Fancy Alphas, covered with a paper from Sarah Batdorf’s Birthday
Wishes Solids Paper Mini. I am covering the alphas because Sarah’s
paper is a great blue color that coordinates well with my son’s
pajama color.

Instead of putting the focus on the big "2," like in my
older layout, I want the focus to be on the word "Read," since
that is the point of the layout. So using my Color Picker Tool, I select
a brown color sample from the torn paper, and use that for the "Loves
To" part
of the title. Using existing colors for part of the title really
brings a sense of coordination to the layout.
Now it’s time to
add my journaling. My older layout didn’t
have any journaling at all and I want to make sure that whoever reads
this knows a little bit of back story to the photo. So I’m going
to add my journaling right beneath the title, lining up my text box
with the edges of the "Read" part of the title.

Since the background
paper is a little busy, I am finding that the journaling doesn’t
show up well enough on its own. So I’m
going to add a new layer underneath the journaling, and use my Color
Picker Tool to select a green that matches the background paper’s
base color. Then I’ll use a brush from Lori Cook’s Grunge
2 Brush Set to brush a base of green behind the journaling so
that it is more visible. But because I selected that green from the
background paper, it is very subtle.
Now that the basics of the layout
are done, it’s time to add
a few embellishments here and there to complete the look. Just going
through my stash, I’ve found Amanda Sok’s A Man’s
Life Embellishments, Ariadna’s Acrylic Love Embellishments,
Keri’s
Alive Embellishments, Erica’s Applique Collection Mini,
and Shalae’s
Carnival Ride Collection Mini. They go well together, and coordinate
with my brown, green and blue color scheme.
So here’s the finished
layout. You can see that the main bone structure is the same as the
older layout, it’s just a little more interesting. I have added
drop shadows for some realism, and there’s a lot more
going on that all coordinates together.

January Board Game: Progressive
Word Scramble
Here's how it works. The object of the game
is to correctly guess a boutique item by solving clues and unscrambling
letters we give you. Each day you are given a letter or several
letters of the name of a boutique item as well as a clue. You
won't know how many letters are in the boutique item name until
it is complete. We will keep giving clues until a correct guess
is made.
The designer's name is not included as part
of the puzzle, and the word "collection" is not included as
part of the puzzle either. Letters from any other words in product
names (such as "biggie", "brush", or "transparency") may be given
as part of the puzzle.
Here is an example:
Day 1 Letters: i
Day 1 Hint: I'm oh so pretty
Day 2 Letters: t n
Day 2 Hint: I know you'll love my soft reds, and blues, and greens
Day 3 Letters: u o i
Day 3 Hint: It was so nice of Angie to give me some flowers
Answer: Angie Briggs' Intuition Collection
Be the first to answer it correctly and win
a $5.00 Gift Certificate to the Boutique! You are only allowed
ONE guess per daily clue, and you are only allowed ONE win per
month. When you make your guess, you MUST link it to the boutique
item you are referencing. We will play the game daily during
the entire month of January. When a correct answer is given,
the new puzzle will start the following day.

January Layout Contests:
Layout
Contest: You could win a $10 Gift Certificate
to the Boutique! With New Year’s Day here, we tend
to think in terms of our resolutions for the year ahead.
How about taking some time to reflect on the year that has
just passed? You could look at the resolutions you made last
year at this time and scrap about how you did at keeping
them. Or on a less serious note, you could do a retrospective
of your year with a few (or several) photos that highlight
your year. Maybe there is one event in your year that was
extra special, like a wedding, a birth, or a death in the
family. So let’s see your layouts highlighting the
year just past.
Mid-December
Layout Contest: The end of 2007 is upon us. 2008 will
be starting soon! Do you have any New Year’s Resolutions?
We want you to scrap them! Show us your layouts featuring your
New Year Resolutions and you could win a $10 Gift Certificate
to the Scrap Girls Boutique! Post your layouts to the Monthly
Contest Gallery between December 15th and January 14th to be
eligible. Good Luck!

It's time for you to stop playing
catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more
advanced tricks that you see other people and professional
digital scrapbookers doing.
- Take the world's easiest shortcuts to
creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
- Make sure that you don't make the biggest
mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create
layouts.
- Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap
Girls ScrapSimple products.
- Dip your digital scrapbooking self into
some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there
waiting in your software for you to use such as paths,
masks, the drawing pen, and more.
- See how easy it is to install and manage
new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you
can make things that are creative and unique.
- Learn advanced tricks for using tools
that you already know and love.
- Watch me make some beautiful papers and
get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear...
That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind
to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside
of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside
of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
- See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm
betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used
to do that with, too...)
- Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets.
(You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets
frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this
trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all

- Find out why Custom Shapes are so important
to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
- Learn how to cut out a title from a background
or a photo.
- And even more...
Note: These are NOT beginning
tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used
Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself
in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have
to understand layers, where things are located, and all of
the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook

Ro personally uses Carbonite to
back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives,
it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important
documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely
up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying
about losing important business and financial files, because
the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
