For as long as I can remember, I have loved taking pictures. It didn’t
matter what the subject was, everything from flowers to self-portraits
was fair game. When I had Jordan, I began taking photos more regularly,
documenting everyday moments and monumental occasions. I’ve recently
realized how much I want to learn more about photography... not just
the simple point and shoot, but what makes a great photo. So, I’ve
purchased a digital SLR and am slowly learning more about the technical
stuff in an effort to improve my photos. It’s a great thing that
this hobby of mine goes hand-in-hand with my love of digital scrapping
- I’ll never run out of subjects to scrap!

Sometimes, a paper/collection can be sooo close to perfect for a project,
but one little thing holds you back from using it. In this case, I
LOVED the fun and playful colors in Theresa Kavouras’ Spring
to Life Collection Biggie, but the green color just wasn’t
right for this layout. In cases like this, I like to use my Magic Wand
Tool (“Contiguous” was un-checked) to select the green
areas on the background papers, then copy those selections to a new
layer above the original paper. Once this is done, you can either adjust
the hue/saturation to get a different color, or do as I did and apply
a layer style to compliment a feature of your focal photograph (I used
Cheryl Barber’s 14K 4104 to mimic the gold in my daughter’s
kimono).

I used my storm photo to make the front of the file folder. After
bringing the file folder onto my layout, I duplicated my photo layer,
moved the copy above the front of the folder and created a clipping
mask. I then moved the photo around until I was happy with the
part of the sky that was showing and merged the two layers. I
gave the paper some depth and texture by inking the edges a little
using an Inner Glow, adding a texture in the Bevel and Emboss settings,
and applying a Pattern Overlay with the Blend Mode set to "Luminosity"
and the Opacity set to about 35%.

I took Theresa’s ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Corner
Folds Off Center and opened the three files for the corner fold
I wanted to use. I dragged them all onto my layout, then selected
all three layers in my Layers Palette and dragged them into the upper
right hand corner. Then I selected the layer of the fold, dragged
my red background paper onto my layer. I made sure that it was
above the fold template layer and then I applied a clipping mask (Ctrl+G).

Directions for blending a photo into a paper:
In keeping with the theme, I wanted to create an army camo alpha for
the title of this page. To create your own alpha, open a new
document and type in the title. I used the Army font off the
internet and scaled it to about the size I wanted in my layout. Next,
Rasterize (Simplify in PSE) the type, then drag and drop the camo
paper onto your layout. Scale
the paper down to about 50% of the original size. Look at the design
of the paper and decide what part you want to cut the title from. I
liked the bottom of the page where there was interesting texture, color
and contrast. Move the type to that area of the page and select
the type with the Magic Wand Tool. When the type is outlined
with marching ants, Select> Inverse, and click on the paper
layer. Now, just Delete the paper and you have your title in
camo. You have many choices to complete your title. You can add
a drop shadow, a stroke, or bevel and emboss depending on the look
and the amount of dimension you want. This is a simple way to create
custom titles on your scrapbook pages.

A Designer's Life: Dee-Ann
Decker
Reflections of 2007
As the year 2007 began, life looked very uncertain. My husband had
been notified during the week of Christmas that he was being laid off
as of January 4th. He had surgery scheduled for February and we had
three more college tuition payments to make for our daughter. We had
rescued a 4½-year-old Weimaraner at the end of the year and
were adjusting to a very neurotic dog.
On the bright side, Ro had called
and asked me to write tutorials for the newsletters and I was thrilled.
The family was healthy and doing well. John’s surgery
was an elective shoulder repair and at least he would not miss any work, just
snowmobiling. Our daughter’s grades were great and she was getting the
most out of her college experience.
Fast forward to December and life is so much
brighter, but the year did not go by without its ups and downs.
-
John
found a job that did not require us to move and he enjoys it.
-
We paid
our LAST college tuition bill and she is looking at Masters' programs.
-
Our
Sampson passed away very unexpectedly after being with us only a
year.
-
We
rescued another Weimaraner puppy, Kaya, a nine-month-old girl this
time.
-
We have three more babies in the family, with more due in 2008!
-
We
have a new roof on the house and no one was injured while building
it.
-
I threw John a huge birthday party on 07-07-07 and the weather
was great.
-
Morgan turned 21 years old!
-
I continue to write tutorials for the newsletter
and have my first products up for sale in the boutique.
-
John’s
surgery went well and he has done a lot of snowmobiling already
this year.
The most impactful point of my year was traveling to Minnesota
to meet some of the Scrap Girls team. It was like we had just been
together, rather than meeting for the first time. We talked, ate, walked
and talked some more. We slept very little and laughed a lot. There
were computers everywhere and everyone shared tips and tricks. I watched
Trish build snowflakes and learned more about Photoshop just in watching
her than I had all year on my own. Laurel worked on a layout with me
in person, it was so cool!
There is a saying, “When one door closes,
somewhere a window opens.” Our
windows were thrown wide open this year, with so many new and exciting
opportunities presenting themselves. I can only trust that we have chosen
the best and are up for the challenges. One thing is certain, I am blessed
to be a part of the most wonderful community of women and men found anywhere
in the world.

This template makes it very easy to share layouts with family and
friends. I created them to use with the many templates we have in the
boutique. This layout is the cover to my Scrap Girls Retreat brag book.

Question: I'm ready to
purchase some Neutral Shadows, but I can't tell what the difference
is between 2801 and 2802. I'm running PSE 3.0 on a Mac PowerBook
G4. I'm ready to click the "take
my money" button, but want to be sure I know what I'm getting
(and I can't get BOTH right now).
Answer 1: The difference between
the two is the shadow. One has a sharper line to it, the other
is softer (if that makes sense). But, I'm not sure which is which.
Ro created these and explained it once upon a time, but I can't
find the thread. I'll keep looking for it!
Answer 2: Sure, I can help
you out. These neutral colors are so useful that I felt it would
be worthwhile to give them to you with two different sharpness
settings. There are times when you will want a crisp edge and
other times when it will look better if you use a softer edge.
It depends on what your element is, what is behind it, etc.
Unfortunately,
in PSE2, 3, and 4, you can't modify the default shadows hardly
at all - certainly not the color - and almost nothing else worthwhile.
I nearly went wild trying to make my layouts in Secrets for PSE
3 and 4 look decent because of the problem. (Those black shadows!
Shudder!)
That's why I came up with these shadow sets. Because
I use Photoshop most of the time, I understand clearly why it
was a huge issue that the shadows were like that. At first, I
made them for myself to use when I had to do things in PSE and
then I realized that other people might like them, too.
Anyway,
2801 has the softer edges and 2802 has the sharper edges.
Response: Thanks, Ro. That's one of the best things about this board. We
get to hear from the folks who actually create these products.
And, thanks for choosing to share the shadows, too. I'm in that
predicament right now with UGLY black shadows just not working.
I'm off to purchase some shadows! YIPPEE!! |

Question: I have a question
about using the ScrapSimple
Paper Templates. I did some searching and that didn't turn
up what I wanted. I also looked at the articles in the University
on paper templates. If there's a thread or article already
that I have missed, I apologize for being blind. Please just
point me in the right direction!
I have a few paper templates
that have parts that are different shades of gray. For example,
Bitsy (Swirls
and others) and Stitched (Birds2,
from the last Dec ScrapSimple Club). I know how to select the
parts that are just one of the shades of gray and fill it with
a plain color. But, what I want to do is fill it with an existing
digital scrap paper. For example, I want the lighter gray portions
to be filled with one scrap paper, the darker gray portions
to be filled with a different paper, etc. This looks like something
I've seen done and I want to learn how!
If it was just one paper
I wanted on the whole template design, I would just Ctrl+G and
then Ctrl+E to clip the paper to the design. But, how
do you clip the paper to just certain portions of the template?
Do I need to use multiple copies of the template? Do I select
and delete parts and clip a paper onto what is left and then
layer that under another copy with different parts deleted? Or,
is there a way to just use one copy of the template, select each
shade of gray and attach/clip/fill (whatever) different papers
to each shade of gray? I just don't want to do something a hard,
long way if there's an easier way. I hope I'm making sense! I
use PSE5. Thank you!
Answer: Here's what I do:
Open a new document and drag your paper
template onto it. Select one shade of gray, the way you used
to do it so far. Create a new layer above it and fill the selection
with any color (black for example). Next, drag your digital scrapbooking
paper above that filled layer and clip them both. Repeat as many
times as necessary and turn off the visibility of the paper
template when you're done. Hope that helps!
Response: I must remember
that; that's a great answer. (I'm collecting tips as I'm still
learning.) |
 |
 |
 |
 |
 |
 |
Question: I'm kind of
a novice in digital scrapbooking and have been using PSE5. I
use templates for almost everything that I do. When I load a
paper or photo just above the layer I want it in, I hit Ctrl+G to
place the paper or photo behind the shape in the layer that I
want it in. This way, the photo or paper will be the shape that
was designed in the template.
I just received PSE6 and have
started playing with it. Apparently, Ctrl+G does not
work in PSE6. I tried finding out what the command is actually
called in PSE5, so I could find in it PSE6, but could not figure
it out. I'm sure I picked up the Ctrl+G tip somewhere,
but don't know where or how to figure out how to do this in PSE6.
It sure did make using templates easy and without it I don't
know if PSE6 is going to work for me!
Answer 1: I have PSE6
and Ctrl+G still works like you explained it did for you
in 5. I know on rare occasions it didn't seem to work the first
time I clicked it, but when I tried again it would. You could
try using the menu command Layer> Group With
Previous (which is what Ctrl+G is short for.) I guess
the only advice I can give is to make sure you have the top layer
selected with the shape you want below it. On more than one occasion,
I have tried to do something that I know should work, only to
find I didn't have a layer selected. I am sorry that I don't
have a better answer for you! But, I wanted you to at least know
that they didn't change it.
Response: The command “Group
With Previous” is grayed
out and not available for the template. I'll try another one
and see if it's a problem on that one, too. OK, I tried another
template, but I still had the same problem. When I dragged a
paper onto the template, I noticed in the bottom corner that
it had a “+” sign. It says that that indicates
a frame layer. I simplified the layer and Ctrl+G worked!
Why did it come in as a frame layer? Is there a way to get rid
of it? I don't want to have to get rid of that every time! Also,
when I drag a paper onto the template, it comes in much smaller
than the template. Both the template and the paper are sized
at 12x12. I hope that there's something else I just need to change
to avoid this each time, too.
Response Answer 1: I am
a new user of PSE6 and, from what I have read, some things work
a little differently from previous editions. When it comes to
moving papers, elements, etc. onto a layout, you cannot drag
the item up from the project bin. PSE6 does weird things with
it, like the sizing problem you mentioned. You can solve this
several ways.
- Drag items from your workspace DOWN to the project
bin.
- Use the File> Place command. This will bring up
your folders so that you can browse. Once you select a file,
it will be placed on your layout. If you don't see it, try
arranging your layers.
- Go to Window> Image> Tile. This will arrange
all of your open files in the workspace. You can then drag
items onto your layout.
I use all of these techniques and don't have
any sizing issues. I hope this helps! Let us know if it does
not!
Response Answer 2: Yes,
your problem is that you have created a frame layer. This is
a kind of strange, new thing in PSE6. This happens if you drag
up from the project bin. You need to open the “thing” (paper,
embellishment) and have it as the working document and then drag
this down onto your layout document in the project bin. This will
not create a frame layer and you will then be able to use Ctrl+G as
normal. So basically, drag opposite to PSE5. |

January Board Game: Progressive
Word Scramble
Here's how it works. The object of the game
is to correctly guess a boutique item by solving clues and unscrambling
letters we give you. Each day you are given a letter or several
letters of the name of a boutique item as well as a clue. You
won't know how many letters are in the boutique item name until
it is complete. We will keep giving clues until a correct guess
is made.
The designer's name is not included as part
of the puzzle, and the word "collection" is not included as
part of the puzzle either. Letters from any other words in product
names (such as "biggie", "brush", or "transparency") may be given
as part of the puzzle.
Here is an example:
Day 1 Letters: i
Day 1 Hint: I'm oh so pretty
Day 2 Letters: t n
Day 2 Hint: I know you'll love my soft reds, and blues, and greens
Day 3 Letters: u o i
Day 3 Hint: It was so nice of Angie to give me some flowers
Answer: Angie Briggs' Intuition Collection
Be the first to answer it correctly and win
a $5.00 Gift Certificate to the Boutique! You are only allowed
ONE guess per daily clue, and you are only allowed ONE win per
month. When you make your guess, you MUST link it to the boutique
item you are referencing. We will play the game daily during
the entire month of January. When a correct answer is given,
the new puzzle will start the following day.

MORE
Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed! for Adobe Photoshop Elements
versions 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 & 5.0
It's time for you to stop playing
catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more
advanced tricks that you see other people and professional
digital scrapbookers doing.
- Take the world's easiest shortcuts to
creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
- Make sure that you don't make the biggest
mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create
layouts.
- Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap
Girls ScrapSimple products.
- Dip your digital scrapbooking self into
some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there
waiting in your software for you to use such as paths,
masks, the drawing pen, and more.
- See how easy it is to install and manage
new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you
can make things that are creative and unique.
- Learn advanced tricks for using tools
that you already know and love.
- Watch me make some beautiful papers and
get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear...
That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind
to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside
of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside
of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
- See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm
betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used
to do that with, too...)
- Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets.
(You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets
frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this
trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all
along.)
- Find out why Custom Shapes are so important
to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
- Learn how to cut out a title from a background
or a photo.
- And even more...
Note: These are NOT beginning
tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used
Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself
in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have
to understand layers, where things are located, and all of
the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook
Software Secrets Revealed series before you try
to use it. |

Ro personally uses Carbonite to
back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives,
it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important
documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely
up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying
about losing important business and financial files, because
the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
