Business Corner by Ro: What is a Good Description?
Because Scrap Girls has so many commercial customers (and so many customers who are interested in business topics) I have decided that I am going to discuss a business topic with you each Thursday in the muse position of the newsletter. Hopefully, the information will be useful to use if you either currently own a business or would like to own one someday. But even if you don’t care to go into business, I believe that you might find it interesting to read about what it takes to run a successful business.
General Company Description
If you were standing in a grocery store line and someone asked you about your business, could you quickly describe what you do in a manner that would make them want to know more?
It is surprising to learn that a high number of business owners cannot do this adequately. They may mumble something such as, “I own a grocery store” or “I create scrapbooks for people” or even, “I teach music lessons.” While these statements are beginning points and are generally adequate for social situations, they are not complete enough to allow you to understand your business. It is critical for your business that you write a complete company description for your business plan.
A general company description should be written accurately, attempt to sell the company, while stating facts. It should be written using business language and should avoid unearned superlatives.
The components of a good, general company description should include:
- A listing of products that will be provided
- A listing of services that will be provided
- Why it would be an advantage for someone to be your customer
- A mission statement
If your company already exists, a good, general company description should also include:
- A brief history of the company
- How you started
- Important achievements
- Why you started the company
- How you have changed over time
- Historical data
- How large are you
- How successful are you
- What are your strengths and weaknesses
A mission statement is a brief (usually a sentence or two) explanation of the purpose of the company. A mission statement is valuable as it helps everyone who is associated with the company understand what the vision for the company is. It can be used to resolve conflicts and direct activities if it is referred to often.
An example of an interesting mission statement can be found on Google’s corporate information page: Google’s mission is to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.
Notice how succinct but accurate this statement is. This is exactly what Google has been attempting to do and if you read it, it helps you understand why they constantly adjust the search engine to attempt to bring better search returns. It explains why the search returns have changed so drastically in the past five years as Google’s engineers have found ways to get rid of results that are not applicable to the search.

Review: Easy Pages
Okay, I know you’ve all been there – you have a whole album of layouts to finish but you’re just not feeling creative enough to start from scratch. Hey, I’ve been there! And I have the answer – Easy Pages! Now before you scoff at me and tell me that Easy Pages are somehow ‘cheating’, I want you to know that there is no shame in using an Easy Page. I mean, what could be better than having the bulk of your layout finished, and all you have to do is add some photos, journaling and a title? I’ll show you how EASY they are to use (pun intended)!
So to start off, I began using Angie Briggs’ awesome Scenic Route EZ Page, which is designed just beautifully – it’s got a great collaged feel to it. I opened that up, and started dragging my pictures over to the page. Then I resized my pictures so that they would fit comfortably inside the photo openings, and dragged them behind the EZ page layer.
Here is what the layout looks like with the pictures behind the EZ page.
Once I had my pictures in place, I wanted to add just a little more interest and a title to the layout. So I opened the embellishments that came with the Scenic Road collection and started placing them on the layout, next to where I wanted the title to go.
After I added those embellishments, I added my title, making sure to use different fonts for some added diversity. Then I put in the date and the layout was good to go.
And there you have it, a quick and easy way to create digital scrapbooking pages without the fuss!

January Board Game: Progressive
Word Scramble
Here's how it works. The object of the game
is to correctly guess a boutique item by solving clues and
unscrambling letters we give you. Each day you are given a
letter or several letters of the name of a boutique item as
well as a clue. You won't know how many letters are in the
boutique item name until it is complete. We will keep giving
clues until a correct guess is made.
The designer's name is not included as part
of the puzzle, and the word "collection" is not included
as part of the puzzle either. Letters from any other words
in product names (such as "biggie", "brush", or "transparency")
may be given as part of the puzzle.
Here is an example:
Day 1 Letters: i
Day 1 Hint: I'm oh so pretty
Day 2 Letters: t n
Day 2 Hint: I know you'll love my soft reds, and blues, and
greens
Day 3 Letters: u o i
Day 3 Hint: It was so nice of Angie to give me some flowers

Be the first to answer it correctly and
