Life Muses by Ro: Super Powers?
Note from Ro: Because I have to put the
muses for the newsletter together at least a week in advance, I am
working on this during the Boutique server crisis. I am sure that
by the time you read it, it is all over, the server is working fabulously,
and I am relieved. (Even though we seem to have a new challenge on
our hands, at least it is a NEW challenge!)
As
I said yesterday, the whole experience was somewhat like “having
my eyelids pulled over my head and clipped onto the back of my socks.” I
decided that under the circumstances, it might be a good time to go
back through my muses and see if I could find something interesting
to share with you.
Anyway, I thought that maybe I have said
something in the past that might be helpful to you (or fun to read).
I’m
going to share a few of these, “Best of Ro” muses this
week.
By the time you read this note, I am
in Arizona looking at rocks. I am attempting to unclip the eyelids
from my socks, make future plans for Scrap Girls, muse, and find
something interesting to eat. I have located a restaurant in which
a chef who beat Bobby Flay in a battle on Iron Chef America cooks.
I am going to eat there and see if he cooks as well as I hope he
does. Since this has been a dream of mine, I am anxious to find out
if it is as interesting as I imagine it to be. IF he is really there,
I’ll report the experience to you.
Wow!
I was just told that I have special powers because I
can anticipate that hard drives fail. Actually, I don't have super
powers, but I have had the sad experience of dealing with many hard
drive deaths of my own, so it is a topic that I like to get on my little
soap box about fairly regularly. (One notable experience was preceded
by the most horrendous knocking sound imaginable. It made me think
that my computer was going to explode all over my office. I wanted
to duck and cover.)
But IF I DID have special powers, know what I'd
do?
-
I'd arrange it so that I would never get a busy signal when I finally
remember to call the doctor for an appointment.
-
I'd have an invisibility cloak which would allow me to browse for
a bathing suit without anyone seeing me.
-
I'd make it impossible to have people's eyes worsen with age.
-
I'd disallow hangnails.
-
I'd invent a type of fuel for cars that never runs out. (I simply
hate pumping gas. Stinky.)
-
I'd squeeze 12 hours of work into one hour of work so that I can
play the other 11 hours. (I'm not sure what I'd do, but I imagine
that I'd find something interesting.)
-
I'd have a new line magically appear whenever I check out at the
grocery store so that I'd never have to look aimlessly at magazines
with stories about Martian babies invading the earth or the new Tree
and Dirt diet, guaranteed to take 20 pounds off me by Friday.
-
I'd smile when I arranged for anonymous checks to appear in the
mailboxes of people who are frantic with worry.
-
I'd create some kind of poem that I could read that would make
people behave themselves whenever they are taking advantage of someone
else.
-
I'd convince the newspapers that it is a good idea to report a
certain percentage of good news each day. From reading the issues
that land on my front porch each morning, one would think that there
isn't a single good person existing on this entire planet. I'd like
to hear about some of those inspiring people, wouldn't you?
-
I'd implant the idea into everyone's minds that other people are
basically doing the best they can.
-
I'd originate carpets that resist stains.
-
I would make it impossible to gain weight when you are eating ice
cream. It should be forbidden, don't you agree?
-
I'd invent a type of car that won't allow drivers to become aggressive
on the freeway.
-
I'd discover a type of camera that never takes a bad photograph.
Truly automatic in every way. "No mess-up automatic."
-
I'd let people plug their brains into Google so that they can instantly
know everything about every topic they are interested in.
-
I would end today's fascination with skinny women. Give me the
good ol' Baroque time period. I'd be a raving success!
-
I'd have my teenagers appear in my office doorway each afternoon
saying, "Oh, my dear, lovely, amazing mother! Is there anything
I can do to help you? Do you want a pillow for your back? How about
something cold to drink? What can I do to make your life easier?
After all, you are the hard working woman that brought me into the
world. I exist simply to please you." (Okay, now that clearly
is the biggest fantasy I've expressed on this list. I am getting
a little wild now.)

I want world peace. Hey, if I'm going for dreams, I might as go
for the big one.
Ah, now... sit back and dream a few dreams of your own. It's awesome
fun.

Tutorial: Add Realistic Embroidery to Your Papers
Note: Tutorial written with screenshots
from Adobe Photoshop CS2 on a Mac.
Adding stitching and embroidery to your digital scrapbooking layouts
is fairly easy, especially with the use of some of the realistic stitching
styles that are available in the Scrap Girls boutique.
I’ve opened
up a design from the ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Chic Embroidery,
both the Holes and Stitch PNG files.
The paper I would like to add the
stitching to is this blue paper from the Chic Embroidery Paper Solids
Mini.
First, I’ll drag the Holes PNG and then the Stitch PNG
onto the blue paper. You can see how the holes show underneath the
stitches layer. Now, we need to add color and dimension to the embroidery.
To
change the color of the stitching, I lock the transparent pixels on
the stitch layer by pressing in the square pixels button underneath
the Blend Modes in the Layers Palette.
After selecting a coordinating
cream color, I’ll fill the stitch
layer by typing Option+Delete (Alt+Delete on a PC).
Now,
I want to add a stitch texture to the stitching. I’ve loaded
Cheryl Barber’s ScrapSimple Tools – Styles: Stitching
and Holes 4101 and will apply a style to the stitch layer.
Now,
you can see a nice texture on the embroidery.
One more thing that can
be done to add even more realism is to make the holes look punched
out of the paper. To do this, I load my ScrapSimple Tools – Styles:
Punch Out 5401 and apply Style 3 to the holes layer.
You can see
here how the holes look dimensional now and the stitching looks like
real stitching.

January Board Game: Progressive
Word Scramble
Here's how it works. The object of the game
is to correctly guess a boutique item by solving clues and
unscrambling letters we give you. Each day you are given a
letter or several letters of the name of a boutique item as
well as a clue. You won't know how many letters are in the
boutique item name until it is complete. We will keep giving
clues until a correct guess is made.
The designer's name is not included as part
of the puzzle, and the word "collection" is not included
as part of the puzzle either. Letters from any other words
in product names (such as "biggie", "brush", or "transparency")
may be given as part of the puzzle.
Here is an example:
Day 1 Letters: i
Day 1 Hint: I'm oh so pretty
Day 2 Letters: t n
Day 2 Hint: I know you'll love my soft reds, and blues, and
greens
Day 3 Letters: u o i
Day 3 Hint: It was so nice of Angie to give me some flowers

Be the first to answer it correctly and

allowed ONE guess per daily clue, and you are only allowed
ONE win per month. When you make your guess, you MUST link

that highlight your year. Maybe there is one event in your
