Life Muses by Ro: Dog Hair and Light Bulbs
Note from Ro: Because I have to put the muses
for the newsletter together at least a week in advance, I am working
on this during the Boutique server crisis. I have every confidence
that by the time you read it, it is all over, the Boutique is working
fabulously, and I am relieved.
I have recently described my life the
past few weeks somewhat like “having
my eyelids pulled over my head and clipped onto the back of my socks.” My
husband asked me if he could get anything for me this afternoon and
I said, “Zanax.” (Just kidding... but only partially...)
It
occurred to me, when I began to work on this grouping of muses, that
perhaps, it would be a good idea for me to go back through my own writing
and see what words of advice I had for myself. You see, I am always
writing words of advice to myself when I muse.
Anyway, I thought that
maybe I have said something in the past that might be helpful. I’m
going to share a few of these “Best
of Ro” muses this week.
By the time you read this note, I am on my
way to Arizona, where I hope to spend some time looking at rocks. Valerie
and I are getting together to make plans for the company, and since
we are required to go somewhere (we live in different states), I have
chosen to set our planning in an environment that has the potential
to unclip my eyelids from my socks. I am hoping to do some useful musing
while I am there.
This particular muse is one that I’ve shown
you in a “Best
of Ro” column before. But it surprises me every time I read it
because I actually said something very useful in it. It is very applicable
to my current situation. I hope you enjoy it.

It’s okay to fail.
I have not failed. I've just found 10,000
ways that won't work. – Thomas
Alva Edison
It is said that Thomas Edison tried some pretty strange things on
his way to inventing the light bulb. I don’t know if this is
an actual fact, but I recently heard that one of the thousands of ways
that he tried to conduct electricity was through dog hair.
Dog hair.
Who would think of using dog hair to make a light bulb? It
seems nutty to consider trying that one out.
But, Thomas Edison understood
something that most of us never catch hold of: it’s okay to fail.
In fact, it is mandatory that you do fail. If you don’t
have failures, you will never have any successes; because that means you
won’t have ever tried anything. You will live a boring life.
-
If you don’t try anything, you’ll probably end up
sitting on a couch, watching TV all of your life, because that
is safe.
-
You won’t need to learn any new skills, because you wouldn’t
want to make a mistake when you are learning in the first place.
(mistakes = failures)
-
Why should you take up any hobbies? You will probably make some
messes as you practice and that would be bad.
-
Why read books? If you do that, you might accidentally stimulate
your mind into stepping off the sidewalk, onto the street of
possibility, and end up getting run over in the process.
-
Why have any dreams? After all, you are too frightened to try
what is required to have you realize your dream. Besides, people
might think that you don’t deserve your dream to come true.
Those examples would be laughable if they weren’t so true. Many
people might not say these kinds of things out loud, but they are feeling
them inside – maybe without even realizing it – and these
thoughts are keeping them locked in a closet so dark that the brightest
sunbeam isn’t finding them.
It is better to have enough ideas
for some of them to be wrong, than to be always right by having no
ideas at all. – Edward DeBono
So, let’s get to the nitty
gritty about failing.
What is the worst thing that could happen to you
if you fail?
When you feel that gut-twisting “I can’t risk
it” sensation
hit you when you consider taking a risk and moving towards a better
life, make yourself stop, step back, and think through all of the worst-case
scenarios you can imagine if you take a chance. Then, think how you
might extricate yourself from the results of the dreaded outcomes.
Could you survive them? Sure, you could. You might not have a great
time while you are untangling your life, but at least you are learning
something about living and about yourself in the process. Chances are
extremely high that you will never have to use your emergency plans.
But, it is empowering to have them in your back pocket, just in case.
It
ain’t easy, Elroy.
We would all love to imagine that life is like
getting on a double-decker train taking us to fame and fortune. It
is whizzing down the track, complete with a five star dining car, flat-screen
high definition televisions, and down-filled mattresses for us to rest
our little heads on. The truth is that we are more likely riding around
on dirty roads in broken down VW buses that are leaking oil. Life boots
us off the train and we have to climb into the VW. Then, we finally
get the VW going again and, if we are particularly persistent, we get
to graduate back to the speedy train.
Ahhh... Those are nice times,
eh? Flinging down the track towards some nice, shiny Christmas tree
bulb that is hanging out there with our name on it...
But, tell the
truth. When are you learning the most? When you are letting someone
do the driving for you or when you have to push the VW bus up the hill
because you want to get to your destination so darn bad? And, do you
really think that people who have accomplished something in this world
had their goals drop in their laps by the great Santa Claus of dream-acquisition?
Nope.
These folks have worked, tried, and have been committed to getting
whatever they have their eye on. They study and learn and experiment.
They talk to people about what they want. They get out and push the
bus.
- If an ambitious woman wants to become the next Martha Stewart,
then she reads cookbooks, bakes up a storm, gardens, and makes la-de-dah
crafts for her home. She makes everyone she knows eat her food experiments
along the way. It is very unlikely that she shops the freezer aisle,
throwing pre-made dinners in her cart, because she is too busy thinking
about something else. Why? Because becoming Martha Stewart feels
important to her and she is willing to work hard for it. Yeah for
her!
- If some guy wants to build a fence around his house and he knows
nothing about fence building, he probably hangs out at Home Depot
and Lowe’s and talks to the experts about what kind of materials
he should use. He buys magazines and books on the topic. He zooms
about the Internet looking for directions. He talks to other people
that have built fences. He might even have one of his buddies who
have built their own fence come over and help him out. But, he wouldn’t
expect that he could order a pile of wood and then build the fence
in thirty minutes without a problem, because if he can’t do
it as fast as a fence contractor, “he must be stupid or something.”
Did you notice the theme in those two examples? These folks are focused,
persistent, and aren’t afraid to ask for help. And, they understand
that they are going to make mistakes along the way. They understand
that this is part of the process they have to go through.
Two steps
forward, one step back, isn’t an old wives' tale.
Actually, maybe
it is an old wives' tale.... Sometimes, you take two steps forward
and then you fall back three or four steps. It is usually only in hindsight
that what first appeared to be a blow was actually a blessing to you
and helped you move closer to your goal.
We often say to each other, “I
wish I had a crystal ball,” meaning
that we would love to see what is coming so that we could know what
to do next. The problem is, if we had one, we would either become so
afraid of what we saw in the ball that we would become paralyzed into
inaction or we would become so confident of our future achievements
that we would swagger out dangerously. I’ll bet we would change
what was in the crystal ball in the process.
I can tell you for certain
that every single disaster in my life has meant that an ultimate improvement
was about to occur. And, I’ve
had some whoppers hit, too. Usually, the improvements seemed unrelated
to the catastrophe that preceded it. But, it was what I had to go through
to beat those calamities into submission, that provided the skills,
knowledge, wisdom, and self-confidence required to obtain the improvement.
I’ve learned that after I’ve sat in a corner for a bit
and have held my mental blankie when life slaps me around, once
I get back up and wander out into the road and see if there are any
more buses waiting for me to push around, I accidentally end up taking
a nice ride on that zippy train.
Elbert Hubbard said, “A failure
is a man who has blundered but is not capable of cashing in on the
experience.”
You are going to fail sometimes. Don’t think
you won’t. But,
it is completely up to you whether or not you ultimately end up a failure.
So what if it takes you 10,000 tries to get something right? Who cares?
You might end up with something shining out in the dark for us all to
enjoy... just like Edison’s light bulb.

PSP Tutorial: Using ScrapSimple
Embellishment Templates: Inky Folded Borders
Note: Tutorial created using PSPXi and Windows Vista.
One of the things that I love about digital scrapbooking is being
able to add realism to my layouts without all of the bulk and lumpiness
of traditional paper. There are many templates that allow you to create
natural effects like rolled or folded paper. I will be using ScrapSimple
Embellishment Templates: Inky Folded Borders for this tutorial,
but the technique is the same for other ScrapSimple Templates when
you would like to maintain the texture and appearance of the underlying
template.

To start, open the layer labeled “BMU_SS_EMBTmplt_InkyFoldedBorders_Worn-Plain” in
PSPXi. Copy and paste as a new image twice. Delete the template
from one of the images and fill it with either a color or a paper of
your choice. The reason we duplicate twice is to make sure that both
images are the same size. We could select the template, duplicate the
layer and then fill, but some of the defined edges may not be as sharp.
We
will now use the template to create a mask for the colored image before
adding it to the template as a new layer. Select Layer> New
Mask Layer> From Image and use the drop-down menu to select
the proper image. (Mine is Image 1. Look at the top of the image.)
Set for "Source Opacity" and click "OK."

We now have our color or paper
in the same shape as the template. We need to copy it to the template
layer, but before we can do this, we need to merge the layer groups.
Make sure you are on the TOP layer of the group and go to Layers> Merge> Merge
Group. Copy and paste as a new layer. You can now close the grouped
mask layer.

Drag the template layer “BMU_SS_EMBTmplt_InkyFoldedBorders_Worn-Trim” onto
the image and position it along the edge, making sure it is the top
most layer in the Layers Palette. Activate the colored layer by clicking
on it; it will turn blue in the Layers Palette.

We will now use Blend
Modes to allow the underlying paper to show through. I am using "Overlay"
for this template. Use the Opacity bar as well to show more or less
of the underlying paper.

I add a drop shadow to the trim layer and create
a New Group before adding the template to my layout.

Create a new layer
group by activating the BOTTOM layer of the group and going to Layers> New
Layer Group and then name the group in the dialogue box that opens
and click "OK." You can now drag the layers into the group starting
at the bottom of the group and moving up as you add them.

I add embellishments
such as these as groups to make it easier if I decide to make changes
after it has been added to my layout. Here, I decide the purple is
a little too bright and mute it down by changing the color in the layer
group.

Events
January Board Game: Progressive
Word Scramble
Here's how it works. The object of the game
is to correctly guess a boutique item by solving clues and unscrambling
letters we give you. Each day you are given a letter or several
letters of the name of a boutique item as well as a clue. You
won't know how many letters are in the boutique item name until
it is complete. We will keep giving clues until a correct guess
is made.
The designer's name is not included as part
of the puzzle, and the word "collection" is not included as
part of the puzzle either. Letters from any other words in product
names (such as "biggie", "brush", or "transparency") may be given
as part of the puzzle.
Here is an example:
Day 1 Letters: i
Day 1 Hint: I'm oh so pretty
Day 2 Letters: t n
Day 2 Hint: I know you'll love my soft reds, and blues, and greens
Day 3 Letters: u o i
Day 3 Hint: It was so nice of Angie to give me some flowers
Answer: Angie Briggs' Intuition Collection
Be the first to answer it correctly and win
a $5.00 Gift Certificate to the Boutique! You are only allowed
ONE guess per daily clue, and you are only allowed ONE win per
month. When you make your guess, you MUST link it to the boutique
item you are referencing. We will play the game daily during
the entire month of January. When a correct answer is given,
the new puzzle will start the following day.

January Layout Contests:
Layout
Contest: You could win a $10 Gift Certificate
to the Boutique! With New Year’s Day here, we tend
to think in terms of our resolutions for the year ahead.
How about taking some time to reflect on the year that has
just passed? You could look at the resolutions you made last
year at this time and scrap about how you did at keeping
them. Or on a less serious note, you could do a retrospective
of your year with a few (or several) photos that highlight
your year. Maybe there is one event in your year that was
extra special, like a wedding, a birth, or a death in the
family. So let’s see your layouts highlighting the
year just past.
Mid-December
Layout Contest: The end of 2007 is upon us. 2008 will
be starting soon! Do you have any New Year’s Resolutions?
We want you to scrap them! Show us your layouts featuring your
New Year Resolutions and you could win a $10 Gift Certificate
to the Scrap Girls Boutique! Post your layouts to the Monthly
Contest Gallery between December 15th and January 14th to be
eligible. Good Luck!

Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed! for Adobe Photoshop Elements
versions 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 & 5.0
It's time for you to stop playing
catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more
advanced tricks that you see other people and professional
digital scrapbookers doing.
- Take the world's easiest shortcuts to
creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
- Make sure that you don't make the biggest
mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create
layouts.
- Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap
Girls ScrapSimple products.
- Dip your digital scrapbooking self into
some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there
waiting in your software for you to use such as paths,
masks, the drawing pen, and more.
- See how easy it is to install and manage
new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you
can make things that are creative and unique.
- Learn advanced tricks for using tools
that you already know and love.
- Watch me make some beautiful papers and
get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear...
That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind
to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside
of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside
of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
- See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm
betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used
to do that with, too...)
- Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets.
(You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets
frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this
trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all
along.)
- Find out why Custom Shapes are so important
to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
- Learn how to cut out a title from a background
or a photo.
- And even more...
Note: These are NOT beginning
tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used
Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself
in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have
to understand layers, where things are located, and all of
the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook
Software Secrets Revealed series before you try
to use it. |

Ro personally uses Carbonite to
back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives,
it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important
documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely
up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying
about losing important business and financial files, because
the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
