Laurel Lakey lives in sunny California and enjoys her life with 3 men – one husband and two kiddos. Her love for digital scrapbooking was born right after her first son. It was then she realized she had a problem: being a traditional paper scrapbooker, she wanted to record her family’s memories, but she knew she couldn’t leave out the paper, glue, scissors, and glitter like she used to. So she turned to the computer and figured she’d put her portrait retouching experience in Photoshop to use to create simple digital scrapbooks. Once she found Scrap Girls and read the first newsletter, she dove in headfirst and never looked back.
After a reading and practicing every single tutorial she could find on the site, her work started getting better, and she soon was offered a position on the Layout Artist team. Of course, she jumped at the chance and loved it. A few months later, she was asked to sign on as the Layout Artist Team Coordinator and she enjoyed working in that position for a little over 4 years.
Laurel took a hiatus from all things digital scrapbooking (including Scrap Girls) in March of 2011. The stress of dealing with her job, family, church and school commitments was just too much and something had to give. Of course, she missed the community and always knew she would return when things calmed down a bit.
Luckily, some of her hefty commitments changed, and with both of her children starting school in the fall of 2012, Laurel saw an opportunity to again start doing what she loved. Coincidentally, around that time there was a design team call from Scrap Girls, so Laurel applied to be a product designer and was accepted. Now she’s giddily designing away at the happy purple place and wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.
